Wednesday, February 22 2017 @ 10:27 AM CST

Track 6 of the audiovisual album Oscilloscope Music
available athttp://oscilloscopemusic.com

What you see is what you hear: The audio signal is fed directly into the oscilloscope, where vector graphics are drawn with sound.
Filmed from an analog Tektronix 5103N scope.

left audio channel: horizontal deflection
right audio channel: vertical deflection

software used: Max MSP (spiral objects, etc.), OsciStudio & blender (teapot orbit & wireframe 3D objects), Ableton Live

Check out all the tracks on YouTube. Pretty amazing!

Very nice.

I guess to keep this visually attractive the tones can not have more than one or two partials?

Called up an X-Y display on my Mac. It's interesting to see how much damage YouTube's audio compression does. Some patterns, not too bad, most totally destroyed.

Most of what you hear is the "frame" refresh rate. The details are all supersonic (192 KHz original sample rate).

Certainly entertaining... It probably goes without saying that the patterns being shown really are not generated from the music. To make those kinds of patterns on an Oscope takes quite a bit of work.

If you were to just hook up your X/Y of your scope to your stereo outs you basically get a big modulated wave running left to right with all the harmonics and overtones mixed in.

Still it is fun to watch!

I think he wrote his own software to generate the sound.
