Lost On The Waves

Description
THE FINAL MIXED AND MASTERED VERSION OF THIS TRACK IS AVAILABLE ON MY DEBUT ALBUM, "SOMETHING".

http://www.simig.com/records/artists/peter/peter.htm

THIS VERSION HAS OLD VOCALS (first take)AND A ROUGHER MIX.

This is a simple guitar/vocals song. After all the big productions I've been doing lately I felt the need to just do something raw and simple, going back to my pre-Garage Band days. This is a one-take on an improvised melody. The lyrics were written a few years ago.

Lyrics
Sometimes I get caught in the moment
And I know nothing more than what I am
Then it comes on like an ocean
A million leagues pouring over me
I’m a vapor, silent roaming
Folding clouds of muddled memory
This is nobody’s home
This is nobody’s home
And the moment is gone
And there’s so much more to the story
And I’ve lost it, I’ve lost it, and the lost can never know
There’s no point in going on

Well this is nothing more than giving up at best
And I know nothing worse than settling for this

A cup of coffee and a second thought
I fold the ticket in my hand
I’m on my way
I’m on my way

One of these days, I’ll know where I’m going
And I’ll count the miles, rolling under me
I’m coming home
I’m somewhere lost on the waves
And the moment is gone
And there’s so much more to the story

Wow
There is something very moving about listening to you
sing this.
Some wonderful raw quality that comes out that makes
one want to listen again and again.
Beautiful guitar melody and very good lyrics.
I agree, that sometimes, less is more,
very much more.

A very fine performance
Your vocals continue to go from strength to strength,
Peter. It's not easy to do a song where the voice is
this dominant but you've carried it off with aplomb.
Much credit to you. It sounds wonderful.

Beautiful Melody
Excellent, sensitive singing and guitar playing.
For some reason I expected to hear a lone acoustic violin
come in (I guess this song or the mood of the song is
triggering memories of some other song).

Thanks, Mungo. Actually, when recording this I thought about how nice (if
anything additional) a fiddle would sound on this.

Like that sound of the Taylor
Thanks, Bill. This was my first time trying out the ability to record on multiple
tracks at once in GB2. I put my Audio Technica MB4000C condenser mic near
the sound hole and plugged in the internal pickup/mic in the Taylor. I sent
them to two seperate tracks and panned them a little left and right, and I used
light multi-band compression on them. Using Elixer mediums except for the
bottom E which broke and was replaced with a Martin SP+ Phosphore bronze; I
think Atwood uses those.

perfect on this rainy day
what a perfect song to hear on this cold, rainy day ...
haunting, contemplative in the extreme ... your vocals are
excellent ... lyrics are poem ... i love the way you sing "one
of these days, i'll know where i'm going" ... with voice
break ... very expressive ... i do agree this could handle
additional instrument but really, this is good as is! ... oh!
... and guitar is lovely too ...

What the hell...
This is the third consecutive song I've listened to tonight with an ocean theme and song art. Wierd.

Songwise this is another terrific piece. The stripped down soulful sound really fits you well. While I like pretty much everything you've done this song has such honesty and feeling... really. I am amazed at the beautiful simplicity of this.

coolness
This is full of cool and style. If that's what you're looking to do, you've succeeded....as a song, though...you lost me in the waves...Lots of cool lines, but extremely abstract...the words don't really flow with what you're playing...it's like you wrote a poem and are just playing some chords and singing the words randomly....like I said...it's cool...but as a songwriter I'm always looking for story and melody and hooks and climbs...et al...so forgive me the critique. One suggestion in keeping with what you have right now is to end with the title....something like:

I'm coming home
And there's so much more to say
And the moment is gone
I'm somewhat lost on the waves

same words...just rearranged to display your title dramatically.

Great work and presentation

coolness
I appreciate the comments. I wrote the lyrics almost five years ago to a very
different melody. I think the original melody did a better job guiding the
story of the lyrics. The section changes were much more distinct. I recorded
it with a friend and made a big, wall-of-sound production of it. We never
finished it and I wasn't happy with it as it felt overworked, though musically
there were some very cool elements.

I decided the other night to just do something entirely differnt with it,
something simple and intimate. This was a practice in restraint. The melody
is entirely improvised. I did three takes but found that the first one was the
best. The lyrics actually go on for a few more lines but when I got to "and
there's so much more to this story" I felt that that's where it should end, so
that's where I ended it.

Without the guidance that the original melody gave I know the lyrics come off
more abstractly, but overall I'm happier with this simple unadorned version.
And there is a certain satisfaction in keeping the first take for me.

great simplicity
Up there with some of the simple stuff that jonx has been posting lately. Short, too. It does sound sort of improvised and I kept thinking that this is like a gem that could stand a lot of polishing. But maybe it's just a pebble tossed up by the waves, and that's enough. Great singing. I would have made the guitar a little louder maybe.

great simplicity
Thanks, Jim. I'm actually considering extenting it a little from the middle, giving
it an instrumental section and bringing in a simple fiddle part. I just need a
fiddler to play a part. Other than possibly doing that there's nothing else I'd
want to add.

Existential hopeless beauty
I like your voice so much, and your guitar playing is
perfect, a great setting for this poetry music, the
simplicity is arresting and wonderful. A slice of thought, a
moment caught and expressed like poetic philosophy. I
loose the thread of the stream of consciousness lyrics
once or twice, but the sense of floating is profound and
constant. "...the lost can never know there's no point in
going on...", altho this is not necessarily logically true, for
the lost often give up, I understand what you mean, and
the way you sing (wonderfully) it says that you are giving
up despite the actually meaning of the words, and the
moment is very affecting. "Well this is nothing more than
giving up at best / And I know nothing worse than settling
for this"... such a sad, sad, hollow verse, such existential
resignation, so well stated. Very strong writing. Love the
track, simply love it. You become just the sort of artist-
hero Camus defines, as he decides there is no way to find.

Existential hopeless beauty
Thanks for your comments, Tobin. Interesting. The line, "...the lost can
never know there's no point in going on...", is a kind of puzzle. I wrote it to
mean like when on says "My wife can never know of this", in the case of this
song referring to Hope in a hopeless situation. I knew that it could be read or
heard in very different ways but decided that I kind of liked that.

I've only read one of Camus' books, "The Stranger". I really liked it. The last
lines really stuck with me.

"As if that blind rage had washed me clean, rid me of hope; for the first
time, in that night alive with signs and stars, I opened myself to the gentle
indifference of the world. Finding it so much like myself--so like a brother,
really--I felt that I had been happy and that I was happy again. For
everything to be consummated, for me to feel less alone, I had only to wish
that there be a large crowd of spectators the day of my execution and that
they greet me with cries of hate. (Meursault)

Poignant songsmith
This reminds me a bit of Simon and Garfunkel's
"Bookends", a bittersweet, tantalizingly short snippet of
life. Great acoustic guitar playing, great singing, great
lyrics, great recording/mixing, I can't think of any
constructive criticism... oh wait... uh, in the song art, the
seagull is just out of the frame! ;-) Anyway, I really
enjoyed the intimacy of this recording, very nice!

A beauty..,.
I came here with that sense of MJ duty because you'd
commented so nicely on my last. But what a treat to find;
this is a wonderful, delicate song. Beautiful words. Your
voice is great on this. It works brilliantly as it is, stripped
down, but I'd like to hear something like a bass or a string
arrangment coming in late in the song; at the "One of
these days..." verse.
