Lies Within The Truth

Description
This is the second of a three song concept that started with "The Age of Reason." All were written about 15 years ago and never recorded. while I spent about three months of "The Age of Reason," I spent only two days on this one. It's a good bit rougher. Origonally, it was also going to be completely accoustic, but it turned out otherwise since I can't really play guitar that well. Like the other two songs in the trio, it deals with the disillusionment I felt at the time it was written. A disillusionment that shaped who I am today and still feel strongly.

The only loops are percussion loops. Standard GB issue.

Lyrics
It’s been three months since the rain stopped falling
and now the groud is dry
The people look up to the sky again
But the light of the world has yet to return

It’s been two years since the holy prophet
said the end of the world was near
The people looked back to the alter again
but there’s no one there
Sitting on the throne
To tell them what to do

There’s confusion in the eys of the little children at the end of the fairy tale
What is right, what is wrong is just another illusion
But the grown ups know
cause their faces will show
all of the lies within a truth

It’s been two days since the lover stopped calling
and now the tears have dried
The people look inside their heart again
and they see the hope
hiding deep inside
waiting for a sign

There’s confusion in the eys of the little children at the end of the fairy tale
What is right, what is wrong is just another illusion
But the grown ups know
cause their faces will show
all of the lies within a truth

Good
Good...the singing is a little bit off key at certain points. It's a
good song though, and has deep lyrics. Harmonies are done
very nicely as well, creating an excellent "disillusioned"
painful tone quality.

Thanks, matthew, for you comments. I'm glad you liked the tune. I appreciate
you taking the time to listen.

Some people are like big children, harming others without even seeing it. Staying angry with these fools is like being mad at fire because it burns.

nice full sound! Almost too full... would like to hear a
quieter section somewhere and then get brought up
again.

beautiful lyrics as usual
Thabks for taking the time to listen and comment. I'm glad you liked the lyrics. Unlike some of the other older tunes I've resurrected, I didn't change a single word on this one. That page of my old notebook survived intact.

A very good song again
I can't resist a song that has a good story to tell. This one
also has a very good foundation, melody and arrangments
throughout. I love the piano and the strings, gives it a
very good depth. The backing vocals really adds a good
dimension to the song as well. If anything, I think it may
be a little bit even throughout and either taking it down
(perhaps just bass, drums and vocals at times), or
bringing on a more powerful part could help the song,
perhaps more piano (only suggestions of course). Agree
with previous poster, very good lyrics, meaning a lot
today... I really like what you have going here, I get
hooked right away! Thank you!

A very good song again
Very cool, Mikki. Glad you liked the tune. I hadn't really thought much about having either a more sparse section or a bigger buildup until you and cjhoose both mentioned it. At some point (if I ever actually get the third part to the trilogy recorded) I may go back and retool this song and "The Age of Reason" to kind of link the the way I feel they should be (as opposed to just three seperate tracks.) I'll tinker with those ideas. As always, I appreciate your comments and suggestions. Thanks very much.

Another excellent tune by JG...
Very intense lyrics, but certainly, it's all good, as these words can't be pondered often enough...

Love the arrangement...I personlly liked the consistant fullness and richness of this, however, I might get hit w/similar comments on my music...

I may be biased on the vocal work as well, of which, I've been drawn to it since I first heard your singing, however, they are stretched to the edge of what might be considered 'a right key', but this is what I liked in this and in your style of singing...Your guitar work plays well to your vocals and balances things out in what I thought to be, an on purpose and clever act of musicianship. I did this in my last tune and it was commented on too, of which I dearly appreciate, but somewhere, my intent got lost and never met the listener. I think that this is supposed to happen at some point though, I am taking it to heart.

Sing another one will ya...

Nice work JG!

Another excellent tune by JG...
As always, I very much appreciate your encouragement and support, Cyd. I'm usually as surprised as anyone at how my tunes turn out once I'm finished. More often than not, it's not exactly how I origonally envisioned them. But I kind of like the organic feel of how a song can take its own path in coming to fruition.

You're absolutely right about this tune pushing my voice to its limits. I have a fairly high voice anyway, and 15 years ago, I really didn't have any problems with this one. Today is a different story. I decided to keep it in the origonal key in part because I know only a limited number of chords on the guitar (and I really wanted to keep the guitar parts in it), but also because I'm pretty stubborn and I don't want to admit that I can't do some of the things I was capable of doing 15 years ago.

Thanks for listening and you comments. They are appreciated. And I do have some more stuff in the works, but it's kind of like baking a potato - it can take some time.

Neil Young'ish
Your voice is very similar to Neil Young. Was just waiting for that harp tooting to enter the stage.

Nice song:)

Neil Young'ish
Thanks, thoddi. I've gotten the Neil Young comparison before, which is someone pretty cool to be compared to. I wish I could play the harmonica, but I have been amazingly unsuccessful at it the several times I've tried to learn.

I appreciate you taking the time to listen and comment. Glad you liked the tune.

good songwriting here! Yes, Neil Young comes to mind immediately for me. Nice production too. The ride cymbal works really well. It's effectively heavy with emotion.

Ah, but you see
It's always interesting to me the lies we are told at the different times throughout our lives. Oftentimes, they just retool the old lies and tell them to us again. Thanks for taking the time to stop by and listen, Mungo. I appreciate your comments.

I hear it, too.
I hear why you get Neil Young comparisons. Not a bad
comparison, I'd say!! I like the soft harmonies in the
background. They add some smoothness to the song
overall. Nice tune.

great tune
Joseph,
you do have that Neil Young vibe going, no
doubt about it. The lyrics are great and the
music is cool. I was waiting for that nice
wailing guitar with tons of reverb, it would have
fit nicely.
Great tune J.

Cheers

I can handle the tons of reverb, it's the wailing guitar part I have trouble with. :) I'm glad you liked the tune, katchoolik. I appreciate you taking the time to listen and comment.

Great Lyrics
You have a great knack for writing lyrics that hit on
several different levels and make sense on all of them.
That ain't easy! Good melody also and I like it when the
production is a little rough and not too polished. Makes it
a little more human for me. Great job Joseph!! Keep it up.

Great Lyrics
Thanks, bronco. That is an awesome compliment. I really appreciate that. As much as my creative writing teachers over the years would hate to hear me say it, I feel like it was my journalism writing teachers that really helped me the most with my creative writing, poetry and song lyrics, because you have to express a lot of things in a little bit of space. I also agree that a little roughness around the edges imbues a tune with the human feeling. One of my all-time favorite albums is a "live in the studio" production, and you hear all the clicks, buzzes, and stray notes that would have been "fixed" in a sanitized studio version.
