Description
This started off as just a little noodling around with different synth voices over the weekend and by Sunday night, it ended up being, more or less, a finished product.

A little bit of a change up from some of the stuff I've been doing lately, but nothing new to me - spacey, retro-sounding synth-pop. Another nod to the 80s.

I just pulled the title out of thin air and once I decided to go ahead and complete it, I let the title help dictate where the song went. I've recently been watching the Carl Sagan science series "Cosmos" again for the first time in a couple of decades. Sagan is one of my heroes and "Cosmos," IMHO, was his crowning achievement in bringing the complexities of science and the universe to everyday people. Twenty-five years ago, he brought the wonders of the universe into my livingroom each week and it was quite a learning experience. And, to make a long, rambling story even more long and rambling, the theme for journeying out into the universe came to be.

I've put this under the "Pop (mainstream)" genre becuase I really wasn't sure if fit under any of the electronic categories. If there were a "New Wave" category (and I'm not suggesting there should be), I'd put it there. But I guess actually "New Wave" now wouldn't be new, so it would actually be "Classic New Wave" which would actually make any tunes in this style made now "Neo Classic New Wave." Or maybe I'm just overthinking it. :)

BTW, the picture is one of the recent one of the Crab Nebula taken by the Hubble Space Telescope.

Lyrics
Destination everywhere

Leave the planet Earth behind
Set your eyes on the stars
A giant leap for mankind
we move into the void

We shed the chains of gravity
Time and space are meaningless
the universe is our to see
we reach out to the stars

Destination every where

destination everywhere

We sail a hundred million years
our bodies turn to energy
We leave behind our pain and tears
we sail to eternity

There is no cold there is no warmth
the stars are born and slowly fade
we can’t touch our desitnation
it’s just beyond our reach

destination everywhere

destination everywhere

As a fellow Cosmos devotee
I'm pretty sure Sagan would have loved this. And so did I.

From one complexly organized collection of star stuff to another, I thank you.

Real Good NOODLES
Amazingly Broad Soundscape (esp for mp3). Good MX/Production.

Vocals are Very Clean (almost tender) and have a sense of wonder in
them. That's especially Cool.

A lot of Flyer Miles Saturday Night, eh?

Best,
Cooper

Real Good NOODLES
Heh!

It's amazing what you can do when you slow the tempo down to 40 Bpm and
play at "normal" speed. You can get oodles and oodles of noodles. :D

Thanks for you comments Coop! Much appreciated.

A Cosmic Ballet!
I visualize all the wonderful stars swirling, spinning, and flying! I like the lyrics and think that Mr. Carl Sagan would have loved to have this for a theme song. Very creative.

A Cosmic Ballet!
Ahhh, thanks very much, Sista Mac. I love the spacey sounds you can get from
the GB synths. They are perfect for the cosmic ballet you describe. I appreciate
you taking the time to listen and comment.

YOU
JG! - JG!!! This is great! Quite the departure, but not too much cause
it's still you. I love the lyrics; you singing, the accompinimant - I'm
dign' the whole thing, Jg. Very nice work.

I'm on vacation away from MJs' and there are 30 alerts in my mailbox
that won't be answered, so don't tell anyone that you saw me here.

I love the "destination" As I listen and read your lyrics, and on each
song you do, it all starts to add up to the same realization that I had
when I first heard one of your tunes and that is, you are a very present
and quite an aware person, JG. To me, these are the only attributes of
which there qualities, they will stand up to the test of time and they
won't diminish. and in fact, they will do just the opposite and they will
evolve into more of whence they came, and that is you - Dion

Thanks for sharing

Thanks for your kind comments, Dion. They are very much appreciated. And I appreciate you taking a break from taking a break from MacJams to give my tune a listen. (Don't worry. I won't tell anyone you were here.)

Let's get together sometimes and play Nintendo!
This is an awesome piece of music Joseph! Everything in this mix is very
good: it's wide, fat, clean and SAGAN. Your fingers on the keyboard are
impressive. The bass synth is really deep, which is good in comparison to
your voice. Mix well. Very good tribute. Very good!

PS. BTW I do also miss a NEW WAVE option for sure... Many of my songs
would fit under such a category while I am now struggeling trying to find
a new label for them...

Let's get together sometimes and play Nintendo!
Heh! I've been playing Nintendo a big chunk of the evening. :) The more
advanced a system I play on (Game Cube), the more old school I get when it
comes to games. I've been switching back and forth between Ms. Pac-Man,
Galaga, and Resident Evil 4.

Thanks for the comments. I "cheated" somewhat by slowing the tempo way
down to record much of the synths, but, hey, it worked. For me, there's
nothing better than the nature of the synth to give a needed "coldness."
That's one of the things I liked about a lot of the synth-heavy new wave stuff,
there was often such a mix of raw emotion of the vocals and the stark
coldness of the music. It was a great contrast.

Maybe you and I, and a few others here at MJ, will just have to create our own
new-wavesque category. We'll open it only to those who, oh, say tried to get
their hair cut like the lead singer of A Flock of Seagulls when they were in
high school. Not that I did anything like that....

You know what this reminds me of...
Ray Lynch, ever hear "Deep Breakfast"? it's such a great album, and this sounds like it could've been on that album. I like the changes and the arrangement - plus, anything that worships Carl Sagan is already on the edge of the madding curve. Very cool work indeed!

Never heard the album, but I'll definitely look it up. Sounds like it would be right
up my alley. You have no idea how gratifying it is to find so many others here at
MJ who are as inspired by Sagan and the like as I am. Appreciate you checking
out my stuff, dreadmon!

Spacey
Spacey track with nice open vibe. I'd like to see some delay on the
vocals to sort of add to that wide open vibe, but not too much or it'd
detract from the song. Nice tune!

Spacey
Thanks for listening, Richard. I hadn't thought about using the delay, right now
I'm still getting used to not piling on the reverb. :) I'll definitely give it a try to
see what I can come up with. I appreciate you taking the time to listen and
comment.

achieve spaciness
by throwing some phaser (or chorus) on your vocals. your voice has a
distinct vibrato (almost bowie-ish) and i like this song a lot. Adding a
spacy effect to your voice would help pull your vox back into the synth
mix and help you achieve what i think you are trying to achieve.

achieve spaciness
Thanks for the tips, underdog. I'll give them a try as well. I used just the generic
"Ambient Vocals" setting in GB on the vocals in the second half of the tune, but
it didn't totally have the effect I was looking for.

I appreciate the tips and the comments. Thanks for listening.
