Politics, Religion and Football

Description
Song description....hmmmmm, what could a sound titled "Politics, Religion and Football" be about.... let me think.....

It's actually more about talking about politics, religion and football - the three big no-nos.

This one's been on the back burner for a while. I did some of the percussion almost a year ago, added some of the guitars a few months ago and just finished the bass, guitars and vocals in the past few days. Most of the GB file's 35 tracks were taken up with drums and vocals, and I probably would have added more but that was all my poor little iBook could handle.

Again, I'm trying something with a little different sound - something fun. I suck at writing drum parts, so I love to take the drum GB drum loops and overlap them to see what comes out. Some of the percussion loops were also homemade with me just basically pounding rhythmically on my keyboard and hoping it came out sounding good. There are also some, erm, shall we say, rhythmically spoken vocal parts. A little corny, I know, but, again, I'm just having fun.

And if you think the sound was completely ripped off from, say late 1970s early, early 1980s Adam & the Ants, you would be absolutely right.

Enjoy.

Lyrics
See the people standing there
with smiles on their face
they will chase you up a tree
with torches in their hands

you can’t tell who’s listening
no matter what you say
if you listen to their words
they’ will brainwash you

We can’t talk about ourselves
you won’t like what you hear
if I am right I’ll still be wrong
then they’ll take me away

try to speak, try to laugh
they will make you cry
try to love try to live
they will take your life

stay away from idiots
who don’t like what you say
they will come with laws in hand
and put you away

We can’t talk about the world
you might not like what I say
if I disagree with you
they might put me away

try to speak, try to laugh
they will make you cry
try to love try to live
they will take your life

Playing games it’s such a shame
we always keeping score
if you pay then you play
and no one ever wins

Take your bullets
take the guns
take your books
have your fun

take the laws
take the fans
take the message
make you plans

Celebrate
the time is near
to rid yourself
of your fears

when it comes
don’t look away
just live your life
another day

Just pounding away you say...
... Well that just irks me to no end... I slave over my little plastic box
focused intensely for hours and on into days most times; trying to put
together a slick drum ditty and I do this for what... So that you can pop
up and outta nowhere to blow me away w/ this wonderfully composed
drum song; Just pounding and hoping.... - Why do I live... LOL!

I'm really happy for you JG this is really good stuff, is what I'm
ungraciously trying to convey, and I do like it. In addition, you have
some nice vocal work too... Well at least we're both having a good time.
I can tell that you did. And w/ a bit of 'tude too. Very nice bass and
guitar. I'm stupid and have not been playing close enough attention, as
I didn't know that you could thump that fat strings so well. Very, very
decent guitar too. And good lyrics! This is just a great composition all
the way around.

You know, I can sometimes, and maybe too often, I throw out TENS like
there's nothing to it, but I only gave you nines, because apparently I
had issues - I hope that you feel the love though, I'm just razzn' ya.
Congratulations on another fine piece of work, Neil. - Dion

Just pounding away you say...
Ha! You got me! This was just my way of getting under your skin with the
percussion. You found me out. :)

I'm glad some one who liked it was the first to comment, cause, in my mind,
I'm thinking someone would listen and post "What the hell was that!?" I'm a
big fan of the big drums like this and the kind of out of left field vocals. I
didn't know how this would really turn out, but I'm pretty happy with where it
ended up. And, hey, it was a lot of fun.

I appreciate you comments and support, Dion. I always look forward to seeing
your comments, not just on my tunes, but everywhere, because they are so
good natured and supportive. Thanks for listening. (And, BTW, I'm waiting for
you to knock my socks off with your next tune.)

It's Love
I dig this so much it's impossible to convey in the few minutes I have,
so I'll just say that this is my favorite of yours to date and I'll come
back to comment in a little more thorough way later (also to download.
I can't right now).

I'm all aquiver...
...waiting to hear what else you might say. Just the fact that this is your favorite
so far is pretty hard to top. I figure this would strike a chord with some of the
other New Wavers out there. :D

formic acid permeates
Like the lyrics Joseph - "stay away from idiots" sounds like good advice
("don't vote for them" would be the other bit of advice I'd recommend).
The smell of formic acid permeates this (an ant reference!). All I'll say
that I really liked Adam & the Ants at a time when that was extremely
uncool in the circles in which I was mixing. You sure do get a big
drum sound here, and it's good to hear someone else doing songs with
a message - now if only someone would listen!
Good to hear something different - really like the wall of sound.
Cheers,
Neil

formic acid permeates
In the land of big belt buckles, cowboy boots, country music and big trucks,
acts like Adam & the Ants were never really cool as well, but, my friends and I
at the time weren't really worried about it. The music was a lot of fun and
completly different from anything we'd heard before. That's one of the things
I liked about the era, there were so many different sound comming around.
MJ reminds me a lot of that. Different sounds all around and people are
actually listening.

I appreciate your comments, Neil. I have been almost two years without my
weekly newspaper column where I could rail against, well, whoever needed it.
I find myself more and more wanting to put thoses messages to music. And
you, my friend, do it as well as anyone and have become a true inspiration for
getting that message out there. If we play it long enough and loud enough,
people will hear it!

Thanks for stopping by and listening. I appreciate your support!

ALTernative
And rightly done.

Like the "Ants" but don't find this a rip. Percussion is Great without
blowing everything else away. Vocals are a bit back on this rig, but
haven't got it over to Tunes, yet.

Wild Shot. Direct Hit.

Hey Coop!

Every once in a while you just have to throw up your guns and pull the trigger,
not knowing where you'll hit. Glad this one hit a bullseye for ya.

It took some working to get the percussion where it wasn't overpowering or just
a muddy sonic mess. Balance may not be where it needs to be, but I think it
works.

Thanks for the comments, man. Much appreciated.

Listening as I write
ROCK! Good drumming.Tribal sound, altogether a good sound.Only one thing - personally your voice is so good and the band is so good I think you could write some heavier lyrics - like perhaps a bit more angst/angry sounding.Maybe try adding a few F words.Thats my only criticism. But enjoyed it

Listening as I write
Thanks for listening and commenting, paddler. Much appreciated. I've always though heavy, tribal style drumming made for a great percussion bed. Very driving, very rhythmic, very aggressive. Not apropriate for everything, but when it works, it works well. As for working in more anger/angst, I'm more of a slow burn, low key kind of person. I use anger and frustration like a scalpel rather than a hand grenade. Same with language. I generally choose my words carefully, using what is appropriate for my message and for my style and throwing "the F word" in really just would work any better than throwing the word "cat" or "Belgium" in.

Thanks again for checking out my tune, paddler. I shall return the favor as soon as I get a chance.

i like your vocals- the rhythm is a bit imposing in the mix - although i
like where you vox sit.

the rhythm guitar is in bold font and it needs to be regular.

The mix is a tricky one because the percussion is so imposing and actually makes up most of the tracks, but, you're right, the rhythm guitar probably could be backed off some.

Appreciate you taking the time to listen and comment.

The Composer said 4260 days ago (January 21st, 2006)
Quite enjoyable
I quite like how you've done this. Having the distorted guitar in the
background just help accentuate how the drums and vocals are the
main focus. Having the tom work very dead and crisp (no long tails)
helps keep everything clean while you're going crazy with your
rhythms.

That being said, I reckon you could easily afford to have some more
bass in there, be with a louder bass line or some really deep resonant
percussion on a occasions... perhaps timed explosions or something as
this song is still missing a little in the lower regions.

My only other comment with the production... would be that the
rhythm guitar seems a little too up front and would probably fit better
panned opposite the distorted guitar and at the same level of the
guitar and bass. Just sounds a little too prominant under the vocals
where it is right now.

Very cool song, sorry I'm not familar with Ants... but well done anyway.

You seriously should check out Adam & the Ants, especially the earlier albums, before he started going by just Adam Ant. I'm a big fan of all his stuff, but the older stuff is more interesting.

Thanks for taking a listen and leaving comments. It's much appreciated.

Thanks, chakers. I'm a big fan of the new wave/punk/new romantic movements of the late 70s and early, early 80s. For me, some of the more interesting music in modern music history came out of those movements. Thanks for listening and commenting,

Mad
This is so mad it's great. The lyrics don't say much at all to me but, combined with the tribal pounding of the music, give the impression of a paranoid madman - which I like.

politics, religion, football and some interesting percussions and vocals thrown in
This is audacious experimentation with a different, unique style. This
sounds like nothing that you've done before, so it is refreshing and
intriguing at the same time. I like the energy that the drums bring into
the arrangement. The spoken parts are actually what catches my interest
more than anything in this song. I give you props for daring to do
something unique. Indeed, think different...so goes the Apple slogan.

Thanks for the comments, Leon. The spoken parts were the ones that worried
me the most because they had a lot of potential to be really cheesey, but I think
they do fit in nicely. I love trying different musical styles, sometimes they work,
sometimes they don't. We'll see what comes up next. Thanks for listening.

The sound reminds me somewhat of
early Alice Cooper like Love it to Death. Your voice in the first verse is like the way Vincent Furnier did some of their recitive bits. And the drums have that voodoo rock feel of Black JuJu. Classic Dark Rock.
I think you and I have simular views on society and politics.
Nicely layered work with some good vocal hooks.

I am reading a book about Nebraska Punk in the late 70s, and somehow this seems like something that might be played in a barn there. There is something messily improvisational about this peace. I will have to find Black Juju...
