mmm... definitely different
Sort of an interestingly sweet setting for what I take to be a surrealistically
funny topic. It sounds like pitch correction on the vocal which gives the
vocal a robotic feel (unless it's my speakers that are playing tricks on me)
which veers off in yet another direction. Cool!

kelli, i had recorded the vocals so many times and could not figure out what was wrong. my girlfriend even said to me that they sounded a little metalic and still it did not occur to me what was happening. I ended up dumping the entire track and re-recording it, thankfully it was much better and i actually had not lost my voice forever. i will probably repost the song eventually but for now I will leave it as is so I dont lose all these nice comments. thanks so much for your discerning ear.

Kooky and beautiful....
Got a bit of that laid back, spaced Velvet's 'Loaded' feel which I really like.
This is brilliantly put together and I love it when the strings come in near
the end. The vocals and guitar are fragile and beguiling - a gem!

Loaded is one of my favorite albums especially "waiting for the man" because there is a lyric "went to lexington, one two five" which is literally three blocks from where I live.

Denis Sedov did the strings in one take. I only recently discovered the software instruments and figured out how to use them. Most of them we hated but a few we really liked and couldnt resist including them in this piece.

Classic storytelling
The opening parody of classic pop ballads - with the plucked guitar and oohing vocal - is great. Even the lyrics are derivative, with the social condemnation of young lovers that aren't conforming to accepted social standards (hanging out in the trees, tisk-tisk), sets this up to be a tale of tragic proportions.

Literature and song is strewn with the negative consequences of forbidden love, and the opening sets the stage here for the tragedy that eventually follows - a shipwreck where all hands are lost, including (I assume) the Love Monkey.

The contemporary touch comes in verse two with the inclusion of gratuitous sex mixed with religion.

The story kind of lost me in the third verse. (While your articulation is clear most of the time, it would still be nice to see the lyrics.) After multiple listenings I'm still not clear what's going on. I'm guessing the Love Monkey has given birth to a Love Child.

The "Storm und Drang" ending does not disappoint. I like the verbal twist of the shipwreck taking place on the sea of dreams. As another commentator noted - there is a surreal element to the entire production.

Also, the echo effect in the guitar solo is nice.

I've listened to your five posted pieces and I like them all ... all in different ways!

Classic storytelling
I was really touched and humbled by your thoughtful commentary. I dont post lyrics because I think that the experience of listening and reading are very different and do not always compliment each other. But because you took so much time to reflect on it I will write the third verse here for you:

With my elephant head
and sixteen arms
Im hibiscus red, yes its one of my charms

You hold me up high
and you draw my spirit
Tho my birth is nigh, with you I don't fear it.

I happened upon a painting of Ganesh and "The monkey goddess" at the Rubin museum while working on this piece and jotted down that lyric on an old electric bill in my winter coat pocket.

I cannot thank you enough for your comment. You made my day.

Rene, just checking back on this - posted a comment from work a day
or so ago but it doesn't seem to have made it to the page. It went
something like: Wot, no credits for the cat? Like the vocals, and the
various instruments all sit nicely in the mix. The combined 3/4,4/4 (or
something like that - never was much good with that sort of stuff!)
rhythms work really well. Particularly like the acoustic sound and
playing. Excellent post! Refreshingly unique on MJ.

The purring is from the little black monster cat named Thelonius. He was the original inspiration for this piece and we do call him monkey, among other things, and he is exceptionally affectionate.

The piece did however grow and mutate and come to include a world of thoughts and feelings spinning around me at this point in time.

I made it
This is a very interesting tune - I do like it. - Okay, now this is gonna
sound weird, but I didn't like this tune when I first heard it. It wasn't
until I visited your site and saw the shots of you and the places you've
been that you'd choosen to share - Somehow, that gave me a
perspective that has caused me to have significant degree of
appreciation for you as an individual, which helped me to appreciate
what you are sharing here - I know, it shouldn't be this way and
nonething else should matter - But it did - And it helped me to better
'get this' - You have to admit, it is abit quirky - And so are you and the
most of us freaks here at MJS - I like the timid sounding vocal work on
this - I dig yer persona - The lyrics are from the heart of a true artist -
I like that - It does help to make this all real to me - Everyone has
mentioned all of the quirks so there's no need to beat you w/ them -
But I think that this is cool piece of ar that you're sharing - Good one -
Thanks - Dion

I made it
hey thats ok dion, my work has never been for the masses, and ive taken a beating for it. in fact, i spent a lot of time working on this, trying to record everything perfectly, doing multiple takes, late at night when the hood gets quiet, trying to get the most out of a pretty simple set up and some really dumb drum loops. i was so proud of it when I posted it and the first person who looked at it gave it really, really low scores, like "adequate".

It made me feel sick, i thought, jee if you dont like something why not just move on? there is plenty of stuff out there. then some people who have been following my stuff rescued this piece, made some great comments and slowly it has fought its way back out of the basement.

so, i thank you, i thank you for taking the time to really listen to it. and i am so glad that you came around to appreciate it.

love to you my brother

I love the way you take traditional song structures and twist them in ways
that you may not notice right away... it just dawns on you gradually that
this tune is different... the subtle vocal effects are great, too.

thank you stun. yes its true. i like being subversive in its literal sense. i guess its also a reaction to hearing these forms in my youth and wanting to tear them apart and reconstruct them. but i will leave the final explanation to the shrinks. thanks for your listen. rene

So Unique
This is like a 50's bopper got a piece of bread with the wrong kind of
mold on it. Your time taken making the recording stands out as the
recording quality is very high. The arpegiated guitar runs work
perfectly for this type of song and the overall arrangement is very nice.
Perhaps just a tad too much strings at the end. So I'm not one of the
Masses either and I liked it!

So Unique
hello bronco. thank you so much for the listen. i have followed your work for some time now. i think we have more than a few of the same influences, so your approbation means a lot to me. that quote about a 50s bopper on a pyschedlic bread mold trip cracked me up. yeah sometimes i feel just like that. peace out bro

Thematic content aside...
What impresses me most about this (and Frankie and Ronnie) is the
dramatic aspect of the lyric writing. I am reminded of "story ballads"
like "Teen Angel", complete with first person narration and concluding
catastrophe (shipwreck, in this case).
