Your Brown Eyes (Simply Fine Version)

Get Flash to see this player.

Description
I have been reminded recently that it has been a long time since I posted a song, so I thought I'd post two versions of another old one.

This is the version of this song that Phyllis Capanna and I put together for the Simply Fine recording.

The players are:

Ed Hannifin: lead and harmony vocals, acoustic guitar

Phyllis Capanna: harmony vocals, acoustic guitar

Mark Stunkel: acoustic lead guitar

Karen Casey: bass

Recorded at The Daley Planet in Haverhill, MA.

Lyrics
Your Brown Eyes
Copyright 1984 Ed Hannifin

I sold my heart
For comfort and wine
Taken the low road
Too many times
Trade what’s to come
And what’s already been
If your brown eyes would turn to me again

You know my heart
You think you know my mind
You know my style
You think you know my kind
I’d write new lines
And let you guide the pen
If your brown eyes would turn to me again

If your brown eyes
If your brown eyes
If I could be the man I’ve seen in your brown eyes
If your brown eyes
If your brown eyes
If your brown eyes turn around

Why say there’s hope
If you can’t tell me how
Why say there’s love
If it’s not here and now
I’d trade the past
And all we did back then
If your brown eyes would turn to me again

If your brown eyes
If your brown eyes
If I could be the man I’ve seen in your brown eyes
If your brown eyes
If your brown eyes
If your brown eyes turn around

I don't know if I keep forgetting that you're so young, or that I'm so old...

I sure don't feel fifty, though I guess I look it...

And this just doesn't seem like we did it THAT long ago... It's a funny thing to
me that I wrote so many songs in the 80's that have hardly been heard... I'm torn
between wanting them to BE heard and wanting to do newer things...

I'm pleased, as always, that you enjoy it, Magnus...

love the
way the guitar works so nicely hear. Very stero friendly. This sounds
more full than the other one but I loved the other one as well. But this
really sounds lush.

Gota give this one a bit higher score but I gave the other one a higher
score as well.

Both deserving of high praise.

Again, the guitar work is very delicately done here.

Like it a lot!

Thank you, Bill, for listening and liking and leaving a comment, as well as for
your constant encouragement. I'm pleased that you took the time to listen to
both. I know that was asking a lot on my part...

I'm always pleased when you find something positive to say about guitar
playing
on my tunes, though on this one the lion's share of the credit goes to Mark
Stunkel, one of the best all around guitar players I've ever known. One of
those
guys who COULD load a trick with a lot of hot licks, but knows when and how
to
be simple and beautiful.

I know the lush-ness of this could put some people off. I'm glad you liked it.

where've you been? where've you been?
Beautiful acoustic lead guitar playing in the intro with a ringing
clear sound. Very young sounding Ed singing lead - nicely sung
harmonies, and a fine folk ballad with meaningful lyrics. This is
not a musical form that I have had much to do with, but it is truly
beautiful in it's simple presentation.
Good to see you back with two(!) songs at once Ed - where've you
been?

Oh, you know, working...being a dad... that sort of thing...

It's very hard around here to get quiet time to record, hence the number of
things p-p-p-posted from the p-p-p-past...

I appreciate that you can stretch your folk-rockin' ears to enjoy this,
Neil...Glad
you like the harmonies and the simplicity...

Credit for that lead acoustic, as noted above, to Mark Stunkel...

Thanks for listening and commenting....

Well...the truth is...I actually submitted this song to PP&M...Noel Paul Stookey,
actually...He didn't pick it up, although he was cordial and friendly in
response...So you, Mr. Mcboy, are on the money...

And even though in latter times they've become woefully unhip, there are
songs of theirs that I think are masterpieces of folk production...All the more
amazing since they sometimes did them on three-track or four track
machines, live in the studio with no overdubs...

Puff the Magic Dragon... gotta look into that...

I am always happy when you give my stuff a listen, McBoy... thanks again...

Man this is so soft and gentle, Ed - Quite different from your last act,
huh - I miss these treasured offerings of yours - The 'eyes' - WOW... -
they do tell the story - I'm on a third listen and man surprisingly, it's
been a couple of months since a tune has caused me to cloud up...
Certainly this one was very timely and as always, you have struck a
chord w/ me, sir... I'd love to be able croon this tune at this particular
moment -- I don't think that I can share any objective thoughts about
this at this right now -- And this is prolly a good time make sure that
my passport really is up to date.... : (

Only you, MissC and Jiguma will be able to connect the dots on that
last comment...

Thank you Sir - Dion

I'm not sure that this was a best cup of coffee this a.m.
People misting up is one of the rewards of writing melancholy love songs,
Dion,
so I'm glad it's speaking to you... although I'm hoping that it's not too bad a
cloud...It is, after all, a HOPEFUL melancholy love song... Sort of a yearning
song...

'Course, you're probably equipped with the full brown eyed package, so
someone might end up singing it to YOU...

I'm always glad you listen to my stuff, AND that you accept what I do in this
vein even as you aid and abet my urges to stretch out into noisier and funkier
territory from time to time...

Thanks as always, Dion,

Ed

I always feel good listening to you and Phyllis sing together. A sweet
simple folk love song that sounds like a classic. It's so gentle, arranged
and mixed with the right amount of warmth and clarity.

Always comforting
Thanks, Peter. I still enjoy hearing recordings where Phyl and I sing together. I
don't mind being tagged with 'comforting' when I'm working in this realm... I
think I've written enough songs with an edge or a bit of cynicism that I can be
allowed to get sweet from time to time...

I'm glad you're ears are hearing warmth AND clarity... sometimes various
mixes or renderings of this have achieved one at the expense of the other...

I always feel that you listen well and deeply, and I appreciate that in your
comments, Peter. Thanks again,

Ed

Classic folk music on the group, harmony, beautiful music subset. Had
a more modern sound than someone like Peter, Paul and Mary. Maybe
closer to John Denver or Don Williams. Nice sound for a nice day! Great
singing there Mr. Ed.

Thank you, bronco.

Y'know, I hated a lot of John Denver's stuff when I was a teen. Lately I've heard
some of it again, and I really enjoy his voice and the simple but effective
production on his early stuff. He had a tune on one of the "Circle Be Unbroken"
iterations that was just great... He was trying to restart a career in country at
that time, I think...

Glad you like my singing. Always worried about that.

I know what you mean about John Denver, He was definitely considered
uncool by us hipsters at one time. But you listen to his best stuff now and it
was quite good. I defy anybody to hear Country Roads on the radio and not
feel better, if that is, they don't actually start to sing along. And perhaps I was
able to relate to him more as a person after I saw a tv movie about his life. He
definitely didn't live the life he sang and was a tragic figure at the end.

Right with ya on that. I downloaded "Country Roads" from iTunes this year, and
it's great. And I also read his autobiography, and there's a lot of hurt in there. He
went from being one of the most popular acts in the country to being a guy that
couldn't make a record, and that's just weird to me...

Take it Easy
Thank you for listening, steve. It does sometimes amaze me that all this stuff
was written a quarter century ago.. I am striving to get some more recent
recordings done and up, too. (Sitting here trying to get a new preamp up and
running... the hardest thing being to find room for it on the cluttered
desktop...) You're right about the "rich musical history" bit... an embarrassing
number of dusty cassette taps, zip disks, and CD-R's...

I'm also hoping to post a few more things with an edge to them. I have this
prejudice that it's nice to have pretty folk songs juxtaposed with things with a
little more bite. We'll see if I can bring it off.

Thanks as always for listening and commenting.

Well...

Checks are good.

Glad you like the analog warmth. This was back before digital cuddliness was
something that home recording folks could afford. We had all kinds of
cuddliness workarounds, a lot of creativity went into that... The studio did
have one of the very firs Sooth-a-tronics. Very George Jetson...

Always good to hear from you, Johnny...

And that one special afternoon when my teacher, NOT EVEN BEING PAID FOR IT, sat down with me in the music store and showed me the riff to 'Sweet Child O' Mine'... which he seemed to know well... Never did master that one...

Hadn't been to your page in awhile, thought I look for something I hadn't listened to. I just love the sound of these Simply Fine recordings, specifically the guitars, really sweet. You and Phyllis really sound good here too. Just what I needed tonight, thanks. Brown eyes might have caused me some trouble once or twice. Great song.

I'm pleased that you like the guitar sounds on the Simply Fine stuff. We certainly put time and effort into that... sometimes I wish it were more audible... 'Sweet' is certainly part of what we were trying for...

I always enjoyed singing with Phyllis. She's a great lead and a great harmony singer...
