##########THE NEW ALBUM IS FINISHED.#############
THIS IS NOT THE FINAL RELEASED VERSION OF THE TRACK. MERELY AN EARLY DRAFT DEMO.

This is a simple live demo of a song I just finished writing. I'm not entirely sure yet where I'll go with future versions. Because I've been performing live a lot lately I wanted to work it out for that format first so I could include it in my set.

Lyrics
I've been a long time thinking of you
Putting off the whole sad affair
You tried to spare me the pain
You chose your words too late
You chose your words too late

Well I'm looking back through the vignette of my pinhole eye
been pushing through this fog so long I'm going blind
Who could blame you running off like that
when you could still be here with me
like me
indeed
with me
yes, indeed

Withered love and a ballad that drags on and on
You would go back to that place
but everyone has long since been gone
and dispersed into space

I don't know you anymore
but I miss you somehow
I'm not holding out for your hurt
though I need it now

We work so hard to change
yet we fight it every step of the way
And you're no exception, you struggle every day
but you just can't seem to change
no you just can't seem to change

Withered love and a ballad that drags on and on
You would go back to that place
but everyone has long since been gone
and dispersed into space

I don't know you anymore
but I miss you somehow
I'm not holding out for your hurt
though I need it now

I know I'm just seeing ghosts
Shadows play tricks in this fog
'Cause you vanished so close
to me you've been near all along
with me
all along
like me
all along

Reminds me of .... um .. pgreenstone!
Beautifully recorded Peter - some might think a bit too much treble on
the vox, but to me it sounds excellent. A beautiful song, both
melodically and lyrically, with very nice chord changes - simple but
effective. I just love the sound you get on the Taylor - any tricks to
that?
I can imagine this getting the pgreenstone "treatment", however I think
I'd like it better this way. Playing live has not done your voice or
playing any harm Peter. Like the tempo upshift at the end.
It's really good to see you back with a new song.
Thanks, Neil

Thanks, Neil. Whatever I do to a more arranged/produced version would be
somewhat minimal. I'd add a bass for sure, then perhaps a minimal guitar part
and/or some piano, maybe some really light percussion (brushed perhaps). I'll
feel my way through it, but I, too, am quite happy with this simple live version.

The Taylor gets recorded to two tracks, one from the internal pickup and
another from a mic. I pan the tracks apart a bit and give them just a slight
touch of Matrix plate reverb. Gets the whole guitar sound, literally inside and
out.

Perhaps...
the most professional sounding piece I've ever heard at MJ. Beautifull
song---beautifully sung, played and mixed. Bravo.

Be well!

A great treat for a Monday!
It's great to hear new stuff from you, Peter. This one sounds great. I really
like the gradual transition from the very low-key beginning to a slightly
more ramped up ending. I like the simple accoustic style. It works really
well, but I can also hear so much potential for a much more involved
arrangement - as Neil said, the "pegreenstone treatment."

Whatever direction you decide to take with it, however, you have an
excellent base to work from. The lyrics are great and your voice seems to
have a slightly different timbre, whether it's from the live performances
you've been doing or just from this being a bare-bones recording. Nice
work, Peter.

A great treat for a Monday!
Thanks a lot, jgurner. I think all the live playing has been good practice for me.
I've always felt more at ease and in the groove when I'm singing and playing at
the same time and not locked to a tempo. If I do make an arranged version I will
have to stick to a particular tempo or I will never be able to get the other parts
in there right without a lot of very tedious work. Maybe I'll try it freeform
though just to see if I can.

Wow, Peter. Just flat out wow.
It's a great song and a great performance. Very present. Lyrically and
musicially, the song is terrific. Your vocal is great. I have this fantasy of
Electro-Harmonix coming out with a companion to their Small Stone
phaser, called the Green Stone. Plug your mic into it and out comes a
vocal sound like this. I'd buy it.

Yeah, you can take this all the way to 'Space Oddity' and back if you
want, but you don't ever have to. This would make it on a CD, as is,
and since you do have a readily identifiable recorded sound, it would
probably be dramatic and make some sort of point to let a song or two
be just this simple and powerful....

When you're rich and famous, please mail me your Taylor, 'kay? I'll take
the Tube PAC, too, since you'll pretty much be in big studios at that
point...

[Parenthetical comment: if I haven't emailed you about this yet, I
recently started loving and listening to 'Justify This'... that's another
one...]

You know...
What you call "simple" is one of the best songs I've heard around here (or
anywhere) in some time. I agree...maybe a little bass...some light piano
toward the end maybe? but don't overdo it, 'cause the simplicity of this
song is beautiful. Great stuff, as usual, Peter!

Great intimate sound
I like this simple and direct sound a lot. That beginning couplet is
remarkably present. I sort of wish that descending line in the "I don't
know you anymore..." section was a little more pronounced (maybe by
a more definite change to a softer dynamic), since it's so lovely, but
that's just a little thing (and I may not know exactly what I'm talking
about). It's a lovely song in general, very well written.

Great intimate sound
Thanks, Jim. Actually, that's a good suggestion. I tried it out just now, playing
that section with much more delicate picking style, and it not only works really
well for that part but also helps vary it more from the other sections. Probably
just practicing playing and singing the song more will lead to more things like
that being worked out; the ink is still drying on this one.

Very good song
Vocal is definitely great for this acoustic style. You have a voice that
works with this well. I haven't heard any others, but your vocal is very
good here. The best acoustic rock song I"ve heard here for sure! Great
job. If you add to it, don't over add, cause it's already really good.
said 4056 days ago (May 16th, 2006)
Excellent
Song is very good as is - not every song requires a full-blown
arrangement. I especially like (1) the 'I don't know you anymore' - your
melody alludes to 'My Funny Valentine', (2) the speed up/change of
dynamic near the end. The vocal performance on the 'dipersed into space'
is cute, but seems gimmicky and, for me, detracts from the remainder of
the performance.
Peter Greenstone said 4054 days ago (May 18th, 2006)
Excellent
Thanks, Mungo. Yeah, there is a little touch of "My Funny Valentine" in that part.
I know what you are getting at regarding the "gimmicky" bit but it feels right to
me.

On the right track
I like your reasoning on this tune Peter. While not knocking the
"backtrack" approach to performing, it's not "live music" it's karaoke.

This is a marvellous collection of words and music. "You chose your
words too late" is incredibly bang-on and one of the best lines ever
written.

One slight knock. I've heard the Taylor sound better. It's quite muted in
this one and perhaps that's the sound you're going for but I submit
that the thing that sets a Taylor apart is its incredible ringing tone,
which isn't evident here.

Still, it's likely that only us guitar freaks would notice something like
that and it doesn't detract from the song in the slightest.

On the right track
Thanks, Snow. I think it's the current strings that are sounding a bit dull on my
Taylor. I have some Marshal Extended Life mediums on there now and thought
they are durable they quickly became dim. Time to put my Elixers on.

Impressive...
Your song really impressed me. Especially the "dramatic" ending. It's the development I like: First some soft strokes on the guitar and at the end you seem to put all hate on the (poor :-) ) strings of your guitar.

And I like the melody change very much in the part "I don't know you anymore". I think this variation is important to make it easy to listen to your song up to the end. Well, this is for sure worth a download :-)
Peter Greenstone said 4054 days ago (May 18th, 2006)
Impressive...
Thanks. The nice thing about playing this live, just me and my guitar, is that I
can really control the flow and energy of the tune as I play, without restrictions.
I'm glad it worked for you in that way.

really cool changes
Lyrically, one of the best I've heard here. just a great tune. the changes
over "but i miss you somehow" were too cool. also liked the change up
towards the end. i'm not an expert on this type of live recording but to
me it sounds really good. nice balance, and mic placement. everything
comes together seamlessly.

solid
You have a world-weary rasp in your voice that I dig. Solid tune, solid
performance. The only suggestion I have is in the context of a guitar
and a voice composition. I think in a couple of spots you could
develope your guitar part to incorporate a signature riff, rather than
just strumming. Something simple, like what a Neil Young or a James
Taylor might slip into a song between verses or after the chorus.
Maybe working off part of the vocal melody.
Very nice Peter.

solid
Thanks, Mr Oop. I think you're absolutely right. I need to step out of my safe-
zone and work out some guitar parts like that, the extra color and detail. I
guess I feel a bit shy about pushing my playing skill, but I know that with a little
bit of experimentation and just some practice on whatever part I come up with I
could do it and it would enrich the tune. I'll see what I can do. Thanks, man.

The hell with this being a demo! This is already a great song. Your
voice is so personal and filled with emotion here that it carries the
simple guitar instrumentation along with it and nothing else is needed!
I think this is your best vocal ever! By the way, where are you playing

Thanks, Bronco. I've been playing live online gigs in Second Life, a 3D virtual
online world. But I would really like to take the next step and play live in a real
place here in Austin. I've been unsure where to start. You play live in the area
sometimes don't you?

Demo?
Well the only places you can play live to start, unless you know someone, are
on the street or at open mics. Both can be rough or rewarding. On the street
you have to compete with so much noise and people having other things to
do but you will be exposed to a lot of people, some of whom will stop and
listen. I have had really rewarding open mics with people paying attention and
applauding and then there were the nights when everyone was drunk and
talking loudly to their friends. Gino's is where I used to do open mics. The
Austin Chronicle has a web page that lists all the open mic venues in town.

It's about passion
Ditto on the above comments, but a great will only come across good if
there is no passion. You've got both. Kinda reminds me a bit like Cat
Stevens of old.

I'm impressed with the quality you get on the vocals. It's like you were
in my ear and we don't even know eachother. I'll be having a listen to
some of your other work too, since I'm new around these parts, I don't
have the history others seem to enjoy.

What Neil Said
Seriously Peter, the songs you've been writing and recording lately, I
find very moving. It's not that you work hasn't always been stellar,
because obviously, you're very gifted, but there's emotion and intimacy
in the way you're writing and playing and singing lately that's adding
depth to the music and making it an even more powerful experience to
listen to you.

The way you sing, "I don't know you anymore," at 1:35 gave me chills.

I just went back and listened to Lost on the Waves and the increase in
recording quality and production is terrific too. This is my favorite of
yours until the next one... :-)
