Lyrics
i'm just fine today
even though some things will never ever stay
a song plays in my head
it plays on and on never to stop
there's a monkey who stays out back
stares at the window i stare back
reads a book page by page tears out what he's read
a red piano that never plays
broken strings it has ...it has seen better days
monkey sits at the piano
i heard that song before
monkey plays chords never heard before
the tune i couldn't ignore
it what was played and played in my head
monkey took the piano away
i'm just fine today

Now, this is plumb weird...
...but it's BRILLIANT weird...

I'm a little speechless about it. It's one brave little brilliant nugget, though, that's for sure...

Just to go through the checklist... I really like the vocals on this, and the chord changes, and the vocals, and the lyrics...

thanks ed
do you mean to tell me you don't have a monkey lurking around your backyard? it's the in thing..all the kids are doing it. i have no idea what inspired me to write that. also wanted to strip down to just basics. put down the drums one guitar and bass. recorded the second guitar and vocals at the same time to get that live feel. maybe i've listened to too many of your refurbished tunes.

P.S the last i saw of the monkey he was wearing a three piece suit and smoking a cigar.

Nice Voice Vic
There's something very familiar about your voice that pulls me in. There's a couple of chord changes that have that Beatle's feel to it and that's never a bad thing.

beatles changed my life
big influence. there is that chord of going from c to cm that the beatles used quite alot. thanks about the vocal never really was comfortable about it until year. if i could only hit some high notes without pulling something. Thanks for the listen and comment.

REM meets Beatles...meets
Vic Holman.

To quote Ed the Ejh: "Just to go through the checklist... I really like the vocals on this, and the chord changes, and the vocals, and the lyrics... "
Your acoustic guitar playing I will add to the list... and a cool ending (grandfather, grandfather! ... heheh).

Fav'd & DL'd.

thanks jack
i and the monkey both thank you. i don't think i can ever shake the past influences. rem is a bunch of old guys now so that makes them classic rock. and yeah that ending, the monkey sure knows how to play a funny piano. to much monkey business.

WOW!!!
Vic

really like this song. Like the simplicity of the song. Also, liked the vocals and the guitar playing. Production was right on and the ending was not expected but perfect.

i did warn everyone in the description that the monkey would play at the ending. how he melded a spinet and a wurlitzer with the built in drum machine we'll never know. i tend to throw in unexpected parts into tunes. i'm trying to go back to basics, so basic this song does not even have a chorus. really appreciate your comments.

Everybody...
...has something to hide, except for Vic Holman and his monkey! LOL!

A wonderfully bizarre turn you've taken here my friend. At once surreal and sublime. Like early Moody Blues meets early Pink Floyd. Left me feeling happy all over, but also just a little dizzy----like listening to Fat Old Sun at twice the speed. As soon as I recover from this delightful vertigo I will borrow my son's lighter and raise it to you! (There are, after all, safety considerations you know.)

Be well friend!
Vic Holman said 3946 days ago (October 29th, 2006)
i just hope this monkey...
has had his shots. maybe we should revert to glow sticks, i don't see a fire extinguisher around here. it took me a minute to place the moody blues, until i remembered one of there songs was real acoustic guitar heavy (the name of the particular song eludes me at the moment) then i realized it's close to the gtr tones. nice catch. the early pfloyd, well i have been listening to there early stuff, and "see emily play" has been stuck in my head for a few days or years. for the most part i'm enjoying getting more acoustics in. especially since i've found a nice tone to work with. as always, it's a pleasure. i thank you and the monkey thanks no one... he's got to be so big headed because he's the only monkey on this block with a piano. but he's in for a shock it's getting much colder outside.

Take care mike,

Vic

!!!
"A" for Amagi..."V" for Vic...I think. When I was the "Conductor" I appeared a few rungs down the ladder. As it turns out, the switch to "Amagi" was actually a brilliant marketing ploy!

Be well Vic ("Bic") Holman!

Monkey See, Monkey Play
I would have liked to have heard the Monkey banging out dissonant chords four beats to the measure on his piano. Good drums and guitars.

Great title, good song. the vocal, reminded me a little of the Beau Brummels, if anyone remembers them. Could have even thrown in a Monkey Harmonica on this one.

monkey did
originally there was a short piano section in there. it was kind of funny but i decided a bit distracting, besides we hear monkey play at the end. remember the Beau Brummels, boy thats going back. several years back i tried to find a cd of them. but without success. who knows there could be a reissue. might have to look around again. Thanks!

like always
your ability for chord change and singing is top notch. Oh yeah you need to lock that monkey up
Vic Holman said 3945 days ago (October 30th, 2006)
unfortunatly the monkey went to vegas
he now appears at old folk homes doing a liberace/tom jones tribute. amusingly, when he does the tom jones segment he gets depends thrown up on stage. monkeys like that kind of stuff.

i never know myself...
til i get there. i just like word images, so it's left to.... A. did i have a cloudy window B. was there another monkey behind the grassy knoll. C. Did the monkey actually land on the moon. ...these are things best left to question during lifes eternity.

P.S. yes i'm sure the monkey is in the back alley and he's not looking for hand outs. take care and keep your back covered.

i'll have to update to 1970
somewhere down the line i'm already thinking of the return of the monkey. i'll add a cowbell. to bad there were no cell phones back then. then the monkey could of had his own ringtone! don't know who he would call though.

somewhere down the road
when the monkey is broke and comes back begging, we probably will collaborate. i don't know why, but for some reason this song almost requires a follow up. just don't confuse this monkey with the ones that sit on the fringe of your cars headlights on the highway at night.
Thanks for the listen.

I think I'm hearing...
... a lost Bowie song. The same spacious strumming guitar chords and changes, the same 'timbre' in your vocals. Although I was waiting to hear a melodic chorus part with voices in close harmony (rather than the surprising change near the end), this is really a nice piece.

thanks the lost chorus
i did not even realize there was no chorus when i finished it. but i thought that was okay since the song moved along. seems some people want a return of the monkey. i'm giving it some thought. i myself, never thought of some of my stuff being a bowie influence until alot of people pointed it out. i guess thats how the subconscience works.
Thanks for taking the time to comment.

Totally cool!
Very Nick Lowe - a master popsman if that's a word - and you're right up there with him. Once again - this works on every level - especially the simian psychedelic mezzanine.
