How Have Your Hard Times Been?

Description
My passion for songwriting has led me to try many different ways of putting a song together. One which I go to when the others aren't working is to start with a title and then write the song around that. This was one of those songs.

Lyrics
Last night my car broke down
And then the wife started a fight
Seems like everything is going downhill
My troubles never seem to leave

But how have your hard times been?
Mine are doing just fine!
Sometimes it seems like I'm wasting my time
But my hard times are doing just fine

They say the economy is doing well
I don't know if I can tell
What good does it do to work so hard
If I can't pay my bills

The stock market is doing okay
But when we get gas we pay and pay
It seems like the jobs have all gone overseas
And I'm just down on my knees

Folk
This to me is what real folk is about, really nailing telling it just like it is.
You have a nice Hank jr feel in our voice.

Cool bronco style!

You have a real soul searching style with your lyrics and your music backs it up nicely!

Thanks for sharing !

Glad you liked it!
This is a result of watching too much cable news but also more than three generations in the work place. The gap between those that got and those that don't just seems to be getting wider all the time.

Tough times, Good Rymes
You got a nice Woody Guthrie feel to this. You sing about things most of us can relate to. You have a good, honest quality to your voice, and the guitars totally compliment it. Nice work!

Oh yes...
...beautiful tuneage about them hard times. "How have your hard times been?"---What a great line! I love your vocal harmonies Tom. You list this as country-western, but it sound more like Woody Guthrie/Pete Seeger style folk to me. Well, whatever you choose to call it, it's a very nice piece of acoustic tuneage! An instant fave...

Be well!

Hard Times
Thanks Mike. Everybody's got them sooner or later so I thought it would be a good topic. I thought of this song as a modern day country song as sung by Woody Guthrie. So it could fit in either category.

Sung from the heart, and spoken in the prose. Thanks for this.

Really like the song!
Tom,
You are ona roll here with 3 really good posts in a pretty short timespan, keep going!

Really like the guitar playing, really good tempo
a upbeat guitar yet the lyrics are paradoxical (cool)

Excellent lyrics and nice singing and whoever is singing with you added a nice touch.

Glad you are back creating and posting

I need to get off my butt and play!

Take Care

Thanks David
Yeah I am a ball of creativity and energy lately. But if you notice these are fairly simple productions and easy to record. But I think that's what was holding me back on posting was thinking I should not post unless I did a full production. But I've got so many little folk songs in my notebooks that I could do one of those a week for quite awhile!! Oh, by the way, that is me on the harmony too. Sometimes I can pull that off if it is in the right key and it's a four note melody.

Great song!
As all of your songs, this is a great song! It was really cool to hear you harmonize with yourselves. This song has Bob dylan written all over it! Im sure Dylan would have loved this song!

Smiling them blues
Great lyrics. Straightforward and authentic. I wish the distortion wasn't there, even if it seems to add to the ambience. Classic writing. I really like this.

THANKS
Thanks for the kind comments. I suppose writing lyrics is what I do best. As you pointed out I'm not much of a recording engineer. I admit thart laziness has a little bit to do with that also.

I love to play guitar. I have been writing songs for many years and have a large catalog by this time. Songwriting is easy. Writing great songs is hard! Born in Louisiana and live in Texas. I grew up on Chuck, Jerry Lee, Elvis, Ricky, Little Richard ... [see more]
