Lyrics
Goin’ thru the motions day by day
Someone tell me how I feel cause I can’t say
There remains an ache that dull but deep
Now I lay me down to sleep

And if I should die before I wake
I can not see what difference that would make
Ours was not a promise she would keep
Now I lay me down to sleep

Then I’ll dream we still have time to play
She’s right beside me and she says she’ll stay
We still share one soul there is no pain
But morning comes the dream is lost like tears in rain

Then I’ll recall how life will never be
The essence of her soul still fresh on me
Though she had me there she sold me cheap
Now I lay me down
Now I lay me down
Now I lay me down to sleep

Thank You
You made me cry, this is so beautiful and your voice is so gorgeous, the tone is very much like James Taylor. There's an easy confidence in the entire song, from performance to production and I love the lyrics, especially "morning comes, the dream is lost like tears in rain." I think anyone who has been in love and lost that love can relate to those words.

What a moving song and performance. Thank you so much for posting it here.

Thanx Lisa
Even though it's only a song... once apon a time it was therapy.. I've never played it for anyone, and there are a few people that it would hurt... since they visit sometimes, I decided to fly under the radar... i recorded this on saturday, and couldn't decide if I should post it... but I've been so unable to do anything else recently that I went ahead...
And that line I lifted from "Blade runner" right as Rutger Hauer's charicter is "retiring"...

I really appreciate that...

Wow...
The bass has a bit of a Michael Hedges feel to it (which I love), and talk about heart-wrenching poetic lyrics... gentle singing, wonderful playing... I worry about the story behind this, and can only offer a nod of personal understanding, and a virtual smile from a friend.

That would be Michael Manring...
And I agree... A touch of Manring-backing-Hedges but with the songwriting skill of John Gorka...

Hi Eduard
thanx so much... the lyric is the reason the song survived all these years... as for the story behind this... it is 28 years old, and there have been so many great stories since then... I got your nod, and the virtual smile works here...

Straight into my heart...
Lisa's right about the lines...

'Though she had me there she sold me cheap'... right through me...

This captures heartbreak and delivers what it's like to anyone who knows... It's in the words, it's in the melody, and it's in your voice...

Thanks for this one, Scott...

I am moved more than I'm able to put into typing right now...

Ed

Thank you Ed
Humble thanx here friend.... years ago I poured it out here... really, now it's just a song that I didn't want to loose... every few years I would go woodshed the song just to remember it...

There was a director who was so happy to show off his lead singer to the playwrite... she was young and beautiful and a talented singer... when he finally got to present her to the playwrite... the playwrite nodded, and smiled.. he told the director... "She is a very good singer, she hits all the notes. Someday she will have her heart broken, and then she will be incredible!"

when I heard that story I smiled... I never wrote a song before this pivotal event...

really beautiful
This has such a power. The melody takes turns that really massage the soul. Your voice is really something; expressive and distinct and used so naturally. The fretless bass is a wonderful touch. I've always loved that sound.

I don't know what else to say. It's a very moving song and it's performed just right and with heart and skill.

Thank Ed for pointing this song out to me.

PUT YOUR NAME ON IT
I downloaded it only to find you didn't fill out any of the tags on the mp3. That means it doesn't have your name on it. Always important to, at the very least, fill out the artist name on the tags (I usually also include an email address in the info field on my tunes). If you don't then the downloaded song shows up in iTunes or whatever player as unknown artist and next time the listener comes across it in their library, or if the song gets passed along to another person they won't know who the song is by.

Now, I went and put your MJ name on my copy in iTunes but it's best to assume that others won't think to do that.

I hope you don't mind the little lecture about filling out the tags. I've given it to many people here over the years, always because I care about them getting credit for their music and also because it makes it easier for the listeners to keep their music libraries in order and to find the artist again to listen to more music of theirs.

I second this, Peter. I too added Scott's name in iTunes. But without it being on the master, the nameless mp3 will float into the ether without an author or implied copyright. Maybe that has a certain poetic quality, due to the nature of the song and story line... Scott, make sure a copyright this using some other method. It is fabulous writing.

Hi Peter
thanx so much... many of our songs we have a good idea about because you can see how people react when you perform them... this one has only ever been heard by me... I was real hesitant to post this because I was afraid that it would come off as too maudlin.. you know, kicked my dog, wrecked my car ect ect... only one way to find out... your comments relly mean alot to me...

Peter Greenstone said 3796 days ago (March 27th, 2007)
just right
I think the song is handled just right to give it sincerity. I can imagine a different performance and treatment where it could come off maudlin, as you said, but you did this just right. I'm really glad you decided to post it.

Regarding the tags, the one thing that WAS filled out by Logic was the BPM at 125. I don't use Logic so I don't know how the tag settings work there. Barring that getting resolved, you can always manually do it in iTunes if it comes down to it.

Ed told me about this...
...and he was right.
I downloaded it...just in case you decide to take it off (and even if you don't).
Everything's right about this tune...except, possibly, for the situation that caused it to be born. Never know, though...the big picture gets fuzzy, sometimes, when you stand too close.

That is a lovely vocal style. I like the emphasis on the bass it gives the song a unique feel. I like the reletively simple and sparten production compared to your other work. If I heard it on the radio I wouldn't change the channel. I'd enjoy it. Regards

even though my son is now a better bass player than I... I handled the bottom duties... I really wanted that mournful fretless sound... that along with the "sparten production" made this feel somewhat solitare, I was hoping... I left some things on the virtual cutting floor...

Great Scott!
Man, that fretless bass is great. So good to hear your voice, like coming home, so sweet and melancholy, the wisdom of sadness, the certainty of meaningfulness, the elegance of trying for what is right. Such well crafted lines. And the progression/melody, like the best of David Crosby. This is precious. Thank you for sharing. For keeping it alive.

Hi Tobin
Thanx friend... I love to play bass, but my son is better than me at this point... still for this song, I knew that I wanted that mournful sound... I'm glad the "well crafted" lyrics worked for you... I was concerned that it would sound maudlin/over dramatic... and I have had to keep it alive... every 1/2 a decade I panic and go back to retrieve it...

Dear Mr Simon, you might want to...
...listen to this and take note of how some guy I've never met before can compose songs like you used to and sound clear a heck more like you than even used to. I know that you used to feel eclipsed by Ol' Arty going Garfunkelly on BOTW, but please don't take it out on Scotty here because he knows his arse from a hole in the bloody ground! (Old English: "Wisdom and merit")

Beautiful tune, fantastic lyric and diction. Clear as a bell and wonderful sentiment. I don't think music can get much better and if you think it can, you're asking too much! I'd love to rate it, but can't as I'm not established enough, so here you go: TEN!

Kind of nuances of Mr Taylor and I think the more wistful side of Loudon Wainwright, but very much your own voice. I love the bass it works so well at evoking that quiet emotion. Music Therapy

The idea that pain and struggle can be sculpted into something beautiful through the creative extension of that experience-- into music or art or some other medium-- has always humbled me.

great tune. I love the fretless bass. Love the way you don't play the 'obvious' choice of notes on that thing - it's beutifully intertwined with the guitar occasionally poking it's nose out. Excellent.

sad and tender
Just the way I love em! So much heart in this song, such deep emotions. I cannot help but love it. You my friend are such a delight to listen to. I can hear the love in your voice that once was - and know that your heart is still such a loving and good one. I cannot thank you enough for telling me about this song. Beautiful! Awesome job!

I stumbled
onto this relatively old post because it had a token on beta/macjams. As others have said..."wow". I was really impressed by your singing, writing, playing etc. You did everything so right in this one. Just had to comment.

Oh my,
I guess I'm destined to cry whenever I understand the meaning behind the lyrics. Especially when I lived them.
Poignant. Beautifully done. Thanks.

Thanks.
Well, thanks a lot Scott. I too was moved to tears while listening to this. It's very beautiful. You have a raw honesty in your voice that cuts right through the defenses and hits you right in the heart. Everything about it is done well. And those lyrics... I've said this before, but you make me wish I could sing and write songs half as good as you do.
