Whatday

Description
This is a song I wrote about 4 years ago and only now have managed to get it recorded roughly the way I envisaged. Its basically about a time I was living in Brisbane, Australia. I was doing the whole backpacker thing and spent about 4/5 weeks looking for work before I got anything. I was basically sitting on my ass totally strapped for cash waiting for phone calls. It was at this time that I wrote this song. It kinda sums up the way I was feeling. The title ‘Whatday’ relates to me being unable to tell straight off what day it was. When the whole Monday to Friday disappears everyday is the same. There is no weekend or week. Just Days that aren't defined anymore. Not a Monday or a Tuesday. Just ‘Whatdays’.

To tell you the truth I am sick of this song and have played it a lot. Maybe played the life out of it this stage. I’m going to let it lie for quite a while before revisiting this and critique (if any ;) will be absorbed and taken into account then. Thanks for visiting this song and commenting if you do. Cheers!

Lyrics
Its Monday
Or Tuesday,
Does it matter,
If its Whatday,
Well I have no reason,
For watching TV,
Waistin' time,
And forget what I see

CHORUS
On Saturday I drink and forget that I don’t do anything,
But try my best to lie on

Well I can declare,
From hundreds of hours,
That sweet aint as sweet,
Without the sour,
Wednesday or Thursday,
Make it my day,
Passing time,
Oh why not its Whatday.

Repeat Chorus

It's really cool to see you back here and I hope it's a sign that you're starting to heal and feel a little better. I've been wondering how you are.

This is a terrific idea for a song, one I can relate to, since I don't work in an office and can very easily have no clue what day of the week I'm currently enjoying (or not). I really dig all of the guitar parts and the structure of the song. It's definitely catchy as all get out. I can't really comment properly on production because I'm on a computer without my headphones, but it sounds nice coming out of these tiny speakers, so that's a great sign.

More please, and I LOVE your voice, as always.

Thank you
Thanks Ledeb. Things are a lot better now thanks. There are a couple of tunes on the way relating to my brother. Tough songs to write but very good for me to do. Time and Music re healers for me at the moment.

Thanks for the comment on this tune. I’m aware that this subject can relate to some point in everyone's live (maybe whole lives) so I like the universal theme. Glad you like the vocals but I am, as always, my worse critic. Must have recorded them 10 times. Had to force myself to post as is. Good to hear its working.

Thanks for passing by and remembering!

Great Song Gav
I love the guitar riff rolling through this. I'm sure we can all relate to that feeling of having over played a song but for me on first listen this comes across as a great catchy pop song, lyrics are spot on and I can relate to the sentiments, Christ how I've lost track of time particularly after several very late nights in a row, I forget who I am. This is a great song simple as that.
Looking forward to your new songs and I'm pleased to hear there's some light shining into your life, things have been hard for you. Take care.

GAV..
...I'm SO GLAD You brought this song here. DL !! It's absolutely GREAT You impress me as You are so true in Your Music & I'm very happy to hear You're finding Your way back here at MJ..THAT is a gift for MJ : ) & Yourself !
I certainly can relate to this song, being a teenager & Young Person can be the tuffest thing . I love the title & You made me laugh with #The 8 Day# , hitting Your head on the nail as we say in Swedish lol.. A()..getting kids for me at the age of 29 was a challenge & also a very great way to grow as a humanbeing. Unless they have schoolholiday it keeps me on track of what day it is : ) Great with holidays though, its a break & ofcourse its harder to keep track of what day it is. Their Easterholiday has just begun .
I hope You have something to keep track of Your weeks, it's so important just the basic stuff, food, seeing friends getting out in the spring(if its spring at You live?how long were You in Brisbane?) People in Sweden go totally mad the first springweek, it's hilarious seeing all the pepole suddenly pop out of their houses! That's what's happened in Sweden the past 1-2 weeks It's kinda great

I wish You a sunny & good hopefully musical Easter(I'm sure the Easterbunny won't forget You ; )
By the way I see I haven't commented Your songs although I've heard them.it sursprised me a bit as they talk to me& just want to say I will ev.
THANX AGAIN !
Lena

Nope thw Easter Bunny hasnt forgotten me. My Girlfirnd has gone to visit family and friend in Brisbane and left a nice choclate pig easter egg for me to eat. I have eaten half of it already shhhh!

Thanks for the comment and I am really glad you enjoyed it.

Sweden sounds cool. I want to go there someday.!

Thanks for stopping by again and for your personal insight of the theme. I lived in Brisbane for a year and a half where I found my girlfriend. Before that I was a bit of a bum but I found a job and her and it all turned out very sweet indeed!

sweet and sour
Tricky little track this - the guitars are great, and it'sn got a great vibe to it, but it kinda swings moods, cool to rough, which i really like. The production is really great on this Gav. Your voice reminds me a bit of Eddie Veder on this, and a bit Tommy Yorke.

Whatever, really great 'comeback' track - nice to have you back - quality work.

Whatever did happen with that competition?

Thanks for listening Steve. I suppose it is a bit of a comeback track cause I pretty much stopped playing for nearly a whole month.

Funny you mentioned Tom Yorke and Eddie Vedder. They are two of my favourite contemporary vocalists. When I got into them first in the early 90's I imagined it would be great to have a voice in between theirs. I havent thought of that idea since I was 16/17 but maybe I planted a seed there and you just picked up on it!

On the competition - I havent found out yet. No feedback. Dont knwo when I will get some off the top of my head. To be honest my mind would be blown if I was selected so I'm expecting nothing. Glad you remembered though -might just track that submission down now!

Thanks for the great comment Steve. Much appreciated as always!

... and another thing...
... was this done in GB3? And were the guitars through and amp and mike dup, or DI'd? They sound great.

GB2 all d way!!
Did all this on GB2. The drums were recorded in a studio but the rest was done using a guitars straight into the Mobile preamp then into the Mac at home. The original studio recording was unsatisfactory so I brought it home and re-recorded all but drums. No amps involved.

wow
Impressive, Gav.
If you get a chance, have a listen to Penguis new track (I recently posted a collab with him) - he was asking for feedback/ suggestions on the mixing of his track 'Ribbons'.

I mixed our collab in Logic pro, but didn't manage to get the guitars to sound as good as you do ... if you get a chance, have a listen (They come with smiles) and give me some feedback/advice.

I think I've got a lot to learn from you!

Ta (but no pressure bud, so little time etc etc)

"Sick of this song"
I can really relate to that feeling when your finished arranging and mixing... by the time your finished you can't hear it objectively, and ya just don't want to hear it again... but we here @ MJ are not tired of this and I'm betting you will get real good feedback about this song... that might help you see it a little clearer... this captures very well, that unteathered and carefree time... I'm also digging the vocal performance... you really make this believable

I'm with you
I was on the dole for a LONG time once and weekends become meaningless and - yes - you end up not knowing what day it is. I think I even forgot to sign-on once because I got the days mixed up. Awful. Really awful times.

Chin up, boyo. Life is better now, I guess. Hoorah! :O)

If youre sick of the song, then you're sick of the song. Give it plenty of rest and only come back to it when you're truly good and ready. Don't force it.

:O)

truly a great concept for a song.
really a nice, clean production. every peice fits right where it belongs. i love the lush "jazz" tone you got for the lead.

one of the best songs i've heard in my short time here at MJ's. Absolutley first class - great rhythm, great melody and singing and a surprising chorus that works really well. And some shit hot guitar playing. Excellent.
