Lyrics
Feeding The Sharks

i didn't hear the silence in this world
something, somewhere muted my ears
i couldn't see the picture in my face
grand illusions in all shades of gray
who am i serving on a plater of gold
copper and silver crumpled up paper
just be aware of the hand that feeds
please collect all of your tiny things
we find them a little boring

chorus:
in the act of desperation
given the situation
I'm feeding the sharks
in a world of desperation
given the situation
I'm feeding the sharks

treading, floundering in the drowning pool
give me a minute to catch my breath
a silent sigh i divert my eyes
don't want to see those pointy teeth
I'm invulnerable to their bite
but the gains make me give in
the drops of blood where i have been

chorus:
in the act of desperation
given the situation
I'm feeding the sharks
in a world of desperation
given the situation
I'm feeding the sharks

wing tipped sharks come circling in
they will tease but not dare to bite
you will know them by their grins
over the partition you will see their fins
I'm not rich but I'm not poor
until the day when i win the lottery
I'm feeding the sharks

Like your new one
I like this one. The lyrics and your voice are very good. Love the chrous. Is it o.k. to say it's a little like Tom Petty. That's not a bad thing. Great guitar, man. Also love the trippy end.

I f Tom Petty don't mind then I won't. When i was in bands years ago it's funny i was the one who had to do the singing on T.P,'s songs. the ending is a whammy pedal effect and ai intelligent pitch shifter effect to give that raising sound with some delay of course.

Thanks again!

Coolness!
You have really become one of my favorite songwriters here at MJ - you are so inventive and create pieces that are sonically complex without being pretentious. That and there's always such a fantastic energy in your music, very kinetic and engaging. This tune is another great example - such a swirling wet world you've created here, you really set it up in a way that had me going, "given the title of the song, uh-oh, what comes?" And I feel you on those lyrics - a-men, brotha!

Your voice sounds great, the licks are inspired, the arrangement is superb. The mix sounds a little thin to me overall and your voice could stand to come forward on the soundstage. I hear some bass down there doing some great stuff, but it is sort of rendered mute, like something else is cancelling it out. Another great track, Vic - keep 'em coming!

i always liked songs that had different things going on so that's the fun part creating small parts to create a whole. the hardest part is lyrics for me. I had the title in my mind for days. then i remembered the movie "swimming with sharks" with Kevin Spacey. then it came together at that point. then again i've worked in advertising for many years, sharks eat the young there.

Thanks again!

wow this I must say is excellent great start. Love the backwards guitar! Your singing is spot on nothing strained just flowing. The lead of course is top notch!
Now which one of these sharks come with the laser beam!!!!!!!
Vic Holman said 3897 days ago (April 10th, 2007)
Mecha-Shark!
in addition to the lasers, it comes equipped with titanium teeth and can be accessorized with seagull with a infrared guidance system. true, i'm incrementally throwing in more experimental options. see where it leads.

Thanks E.B.

Great Songwriting
I have to agree with dreadmon, you are one of my favorite songwriters here. This is a great work all around. I still hear Gibby Haynes in your voice and strangely enough, Paul Leary guitar stylings.... I was sure you were doing a side project with the Butthole Surfers (can you say that on MacJams?). Brilliant stuff.

I'm a fan.

at first i though i read Gabby Hayes. that probably isn't far off. won't get into the butthole surfer jokes. ha! originally i started recording songs to hear in the car. i'm most fortunate to be able to participate here. my mind has been opened and has been great to meet like minded friends.

the beginning originally had two guitars that were reversed. but it was a bit to much for the start. the volume swell that runs through this is a reversed guitar as well.

if you don't mind the learning curve to logic. it's great. after a while it clicks and you can record very quickly. i've had it a little over a year and still find cool things to. express is about $300 and worth the price. i'm waiting to see if a upgrade is coming in the near future to go to the full version.

tiny seeds
i use to work a song out before recording. nowadays i might have a couple chords and go straight to recording. i'll get a basic section down then listen then figure out the next part and just keep building from there. by then i'll add the additional tracks and know the song well enough to play through. most of the time it's a days work or a few evenings. lyrics come last and can take me up to a week to figure what in the heck i want to say. i don't know why but it seems to work for me.

Thanks very much for listening.

A sonic feast...
...with clever lyrics! Love it. Nice sounds, especially on the guitars. The vocal does have a kind of Tom Pettyish vibe, but I wonder if I only think that because Lavalamp's comment put it into my head! Very interesting, groovy song. I like it a lot. Cool. Now, excuse me while I go and fight off some sharks with a long stick and a polite deameanor...

i'm glad you enjoyed it. i usually get around eight guitars in there. on this one theres quite a few sound effects i created. thats half the fun. lyrically i try to make them a bit more involving thats the hard part of the job that i usually dread by the time if created the rest.

Be sure to carry shark repelent and travel in a shark cage if ones available. maybe theres a cubicle version out there.

Splendid soundscape
I love the wash effect over the track which gives it a sort of 60s feel.

Great lyrics.

I like the explanation of your writing process by the way. I tend to work much the same way and never have any idea about how something is going to sound until I do it.

Great stuff Vic :-)

I want a backwards guitar lesson.
This thing, Vic, is THICK with guitar and other essential vitamins... Especially after unwrapping the song and enjoying the first two bits, that guitar break stuff is full of sonic goodness...

In the context of your total song-ish output my only partial crit is a sense that the melodies that you're singing are less inventive that all the rest of what you're doing...I may be wrong about that, but I sort of end up wanting to hear that melody trip a little further away from the basic chords, or take a surprise turn, or step out of the meter a little... Get a little more like something you'd sing walking down the street...
In my sense of The Evolution Of The Vic Holman Sound, that seems like the bit where I find myself wanting something more... And I LIKE the way you treat your vocals in the mix, you've GOT a 'sound', so I think just in terms of, say, listening to a whole CD of Vic Holman stuff, I might want more melodic and rhythmic variations in the vocals...

Interesting lyrics...

Ed

the backwards stuff is tricky. you can't just play something and flip it. i've touched just the tip of the iceberg. fun to hear what happens though. originally there where 2 guitars playing off each other but it was a bit to much to kick it off. the guitar solo was 2 different guitars, i got lucky getting the same notes off the bat.

vocally i did follow the guitar lines here. it seemed fine at the time. but now when you bring up working on the vocal melody to be different it gets me thinking. i need to break out of the box on that. not my strongest suit or i need a outrageous singer to cover that from time to time. Maybe if i sing in the shower. ;-)

Thanks again Ed! you're a good motivation coach as always

This I like a lot...
Vic... Great song writing. The lyrics are superb... great use of the metaphor! Effective way to express the pressure and squeeze of so much of today's financial life. Well sung, well played, well produced... and, well, a perfect ending segment. I won't ask for more and don't want to. This tune of yours has substance, a wry approach, and some classic rock music. OK then.... I like it. Cheers.

i had the title in my head for a while. when i remembered a movie "swimming with sharks" starring Kevin Spacey. the lyrics came pretty quick. since i' 400 miles inland i only have to worry about land sharks.

whats odd though, on this page, it's surrounded by a lot of ads featuring sharks. i think they may be circling in.

So here it is at last! Worth the wait. Glad you finally nailed the lyrics. Everything fits together nicely here Vicar and the backwards guitar is awesome. (How the hell did you manage THAT?)

Agree with the sentiments fully. $&!!^%!@#&^!!!! land sharks!

keeping sharks at bay
true those darn lyrics seem to hold everything up. when i mentioned i only had 4 lines, those never got used. the words came fast when i had something but i hate the waiting period.

not only is the short intro backwards guitar but so is that volume swell that goes throughout the song. i've tried the BWard efx for quite a while but finally figured how to make it sound the way it should. just think backward and slow and decay. a volume pedal can kinda get you there for some things but it's still not quite the same. i'm now thinking theres other ways to manipulate it. we'll see.

Take care.

Jesus Vic, you really do just go from strength to strength. The production on this is just fantastic, and the whole track is stuffed full of great lottle hook lines (no pun intended). The verse is catchy as hell, and the chorus is even stronger.

What else can I say without gushing - your guitar playing is great, and as a songwriter, you're one of the people I look at here and go 'I wanna be like THAT guy'.

Pro quality in every way. I'm green with envy.

i think you find classic rock in everything. nowadays its just a matter of twisting it up a bit. I'll take the Petty compare. those fuzzy guitars go through a amp modelling pedal board that also has vintage and new distortion pedals. i probably used a big muff setting, even though i have a real one from '74 but those are noisy.
