Sweet Jesus Make me beautiful (collab with Willywagga)

Description
Willywagga posted a really funny little track, Ruari Egans Car, a while back (you can listen to this on Willie's bio page). I really liked this, and thought the guitar was a bit like the Velvet Underground, and asked willie if i could do a Velvet-type version of his song ... and here it is.

This is the first track I've done post surgery, so the vocals are probably a bit nasal, and i've messed around with the mix but probably not done as good as i could've 'cause i wanted to get something posted.

Anyway, it's nice to do something fun as most of my stuff is kinda serious.

The lyric was inspired by a conversation I had with my nephew's 15 year-old girlfriend - we asked what sort of job she wants to get when she leaves school, and she said she wanted to sing and that 'i just want to be beautiful'.

The original lyric was a bit of a piss-take, but i left it in hospital (!) - this is more from her point of view, and I like it better.

Thanks to Willie for letting me play with this, and for the suggestions on improving the track.

Lyrics
Sweet Jesus make me beautiful
I hope you'll help me though i know your hands are kinda full.

I Know I can make it 'cause Alex Heaven said
Celebrity's currency and we wanna get paid
All the stiffs wanna work 'til they drop dead but
He believes in me.

Sweet Jesus make me beautiful
The world's my lobster and I've had my fill of school.

I know I'm worth it like Scarlett Johanssen said
You wear your make-up to church and pray to wed
But I'm gonna get out and sing me a life instead
He believes in me.

Sweet Jesus make me beautiful
between the city and the star, i'm gonna show them all.

etc....

Excellent!
I like the message of hope contained in this, I'd like to hear the sequel when the person hits 30 years of age, but seriosly really nice melody and as always great singing and production, I guess someone like Scarlett Johanssen is living the good life going from pre-teen actress to an adult star, good person to pick as far as being a young girls role model.

a well rounded rock tune, good job :)

scarlett woman!
Thanks Tom. I actually picked Scarlett 'cause she's currently flogging shampoo for Loreal in the UK, which has the tag-line 'Because i'm worth it'. It was a toss-up betwen her and Jennifer Aniston ... er, if you see what i mean.

It does seem kind of odd for a guy who's over 40 trying to get into the mind of a 15 year old ... best not to go there ...

Great song, terrific energy, I can see this being done live with lot's of UV and strobe lights pulsing all sexy with sweet Scarlett up on a big screen caressing her thighs and pouting. Oh sweet jesus I can. Great Lou Reed/Bowie Transformer era tone to it. I'm thing Andy's Chest/Vicious. Bravo on the mix Steve you've worked wonders with what I sent you. The keys really pump those balls.
If I could vote on it straight 10's all the way.

scarlett up in lights ..
.... that's a great image - i think i need to go and have a cold shower. Yeah, it does have a Transformer vibe, though the track i mostly played when doing this was What Goes On. You were right about the ending though - I think this ones much better than the one i had for it. Ta again for letting me poke about with this!

Really good rock vibe to this one, I hear the VU influence on the rhythm guitars alright. The vox kinda remind me of Bowie...in fact the whole track is a kinda VU/Bowie/Roxy summit hehe
Great production!

Summit meeting!
Hah - great thought, Steve. I nearly downloaded ozone to try that to master this song, but got too impatient. Having said that, i found on saturday the mastering tools in logic (like, i've only had it 9 months) and used them on this track. Problem with this one was that i had the entire track finished and virtually mixed without vocals, and when i put them on they sounded ... stuck on. Anyway, thanks for the comments ... hopefully the vibe is there.

oh to be that young again!
You know, we were in this restaurant, and when she (her real name is Alex heaven by the way, isn't that genius??) came out and said ' I just want to be beautiful' I was speechless ... we took the piss, but you know, it's kind of sweet , isn't it?
I'm really glad that I didn't write a condescending lyric ( i can't remember the original, but it had the line ' In a land where the blonde lead the blonde' in it), as i think this works much better, and its nice to to be my usual cynical self.

Thanks for listening Bob.

pretty maids all in row
wow sure kicks in after the guitar intro.
great up tempo rocker, really kicks some ass here.

sounds like your recovering pretty well here. vocals sound nice to me. probably does need to be nasally to cut through.

subject matter does ring true. every morning i have to drive by 2 high schools and i'm noticing the girls sure didn't look like that when i was in school. just shows you what media throws out as perfection and a standard of upkeep.

There is a spot or 2 where there is noticable hiss. but it doesn't distract from this cool tune!

Excellent work Steve and Willy

Hissssss
Hi Vic - yeah, there are a couple of hissy spots, but i was too lazy to gate them, to be honest .... typically impatient, i just wanted to get it done (or i lied to myself and pretended it made the track sound more authentic!).

i think that's an age thing ....which i totally get .... I'm sure when i was 15 girls in my school didn't look like they do now (Alex looks like Britney crossed with Xtina) .... i guess that's progress, or evolution, or something.

All guitars are Willies, i just tampered with them. Many thanks for taking the time to listen.

i just love the way you sing, steve. you seem to understand the impact of drama - how much and how little of it to use vocally for maximum benefit. really cool groove you've got going guys, especially enjoyed the little organ (hey now!) solo. the attitude in this oozes through - nice job! anne

Nicked!
Thanks Anne - any compliment on my singing from you is a compliment indeed! Though I saw rufus wainwright last night - jeez that guy can really sing ... made me want to pack it in. Glad you like the organ (Carry on Macjams ... insert joke here). All the instruments are sounds from Velvets records... organ (what goes on), xylophone (sunday morning), stringd (Venus in furs). This was really fun to do. Glad you liked it.

Boy does THAT sound like Uncle Lou...
Very Velvets, especially that rhythm guitar in the left channel...

Lyrically, it's somewhere between 'Sweet Jane' and 'Rock & Roll' on the one hand, and a whole lot of 'Hedwig' on the other... Or maybe those are different fingers on the same hand...

Anyway, I love the song, the lyric, the vocal, and the total package...

take it for a spin
Hi Joe - I really loved the original (especially as my sister has a TT), and the rawness of it - I think that's what i liked about it. Willie's backing vocals were in up until the last minute, but I struggled with the vocal mix on this ( i think 'cause i left it to last) and I just couldn't get them to sit.

I suppose as it's a cover, all royalties will go to Willie ... so 100% of zero then!

Sweet Jesus superstar
You came to play Jesus for the lepers in my head, or what ? this little glockenspiel thing is great. and I like the organ, oscillating between church grandeur and pop arrangement. Another nice variation on celebrity culture which is, I think, one of your favorite topic, but with the point of view of the wanabee, and also a lighter variation on Arcade Fire's "Antichirst Television Blues" (or no ?) Fav'd and Dl'd.

thanks JC - you know, that's really sharp - I did think of the similarity of this and Anti Christ televison blues myself, but thought no-one would notice (I suppose in that respect, it's written from the point of view of the guys daughter in the song). I must admit, i haven't played Neon Bible nearly as much as Funeral ... just got The Nationals new album, and love that though.

nice to do a bit of rock for a change - glad you liked it ... and yeah, it's another take on my obsession with celebrity culture ... maybe i should go and work for Hello!

It's Tuesday morning, but it's really Monday because yesterday was Memorial Day over here and we had the day off. i leapt out of bed with my usual Monday morning joy (ahem) and sat down in front of the computer. Realized I had missed a new echoroom track (got to get round to setting those email notification settings...) and clicked to listen immediately. What a treat! And what a way to start the week. This is outstanding. Love the lyrics and the vocal peformance. Your voice is outstanding on this. Velvet Underground, Bowie, Lou Reed - Mott the Hoople, anyone? Guitar work is very cool. Fantastic stuff
I like this alot Steve. I do remember Willywaggas song. I remember the guitar in the background. I like where you got your lyrics. Your vocals are great regardless of surgery (hope you are ok - you didnt get a nose job did you?? ;). The guitar sure does give that velvet underground sound. Nice and choppy.

I reckon the strings might come in a bit strong but besides that I think it works really well. The production is also very good and the backing singing is levelled quite well. Thumbs up from me!

Hey gav - thanks for listening - it was a blast doing this (tonight Matthew i'm gonna be .... lou reed), and trying to write a lyric in a different style (whilst still maintaining the usual obsessions). I'm not massively happy with how the vocals sit on this, and have sent Willie an alternate version (which probably just sounds the same), and take your point about the strings but ... it's nice to just get something finished, I was getting really antsy. Surgery is healing, but the nose job didn't take ... i STILL don't look like Brad Pitt.

less polish
Hey Steve,
Like this one. Less polished than some of your others. The surgery agrees with you! Your vox sound a smooth as ever. The mix is definitiely LOUDER, good job! Glad you broke out the mastering tools. Logic has a great group of tools to do it. To my ears the track seems a little heavy on the treble, especially your vocals, I just discovered the de-esser plugin in Logic myself, it's pretty cool. Love the lyrics and the story about where they came from. The mouths of babes.....

Ruff!
Hi Phil - partly, this was intentionally made a bit more rough to give a kinda 'recorded in a garage ' feel, but partly I don't think I spent enough time (and my ears ain't too good at the moment). There's something not quite right on the vocals - the chorus vocal really bugged me - they are double tracked, and one track was going through guitar pro - I removed the second vocal yesterday and i think it sits better. I really think the issue is that I basically mixed this before recording the vocals, then struggled to sit them - lesson learnt.

I discovered the mastering template on saturday, including a Limiter I'd never even seen before, which made a lot of difference ... logic is just the gift that keeps on giving, isn't it??

Great to hear from you, hope to hear something new from you soon.

Hi Pete - the guitars are all Willie's, and that's what appealed to me in the first place. If it sounds ok on your little work hi-fi then that's a good sign. I tend to do vocalists mixes as I mainly sing, so the vocals are always pushed up front.

Hey Steve,
Don't worry about Scarlett, I did some work with her uncle a couple of years ago, we were both doing decorative artwork for Michael Flatleys house in Cork, he's married to Scarlett's dads sister, so I'm sure I could put in a good word for ya, though I'd have to do a bit of beta testing myself first. Funny I should be working with him sometime next month, yum yum.
By the way thanks for the copy, I know what you mean when you say your ears are tired, I feel that too after having the cans on for a few hours I can't really judge anything anymore, I can't even frickin' hear!! bloody old age, bugger it.

What do you call it when you are attracted to girls half your age (I currently have a thing for Keira Knightly, except when she tries to shout, then sounds like an angry mouse on helium)?

Hmmm, I think it's called "sad".

Anyway, please get Scarletts uncles sisters father or whatever to give her a copy of the song .... you never know!!!
I always find after a while that the song stops making sense, but I think I prefer the version i sent last night - Phil is spot on, the vocals were too trebly, though maybe that's just my vocal chords.

good luck with the house!!

XS ive
Hey Alan - now that you mention it, I see what you say about INXS - it got that kinda rock delivery (tho' not as ROCK as your new track). This was a little blast of rock n roll, and a blast to work on.

Thanks for stopping by

nice
One line into the song and I'm smiling...

Once again I love the Bowie-esque inflections in your vocals.

Yeah, this is just a good rock song.

I see that you're onto the Addictive Drums - I've been fooling around with them myself recently and think I might need to upgrade beyond the demo.

My own critiques would be that I think you could back up on the overdrive on the rhythm guitar just a tad... I think it would make the soundbed a bit smoother. I'd also like to hear this mastered for a bit louder volume. But these are minor quibbles. Great work as always.

The dame again
I was trying to channel Lou reed, but Dave keeps popping out of my vocals. The rhytmm guitar is 2 tracks with the same input, one dry-ish and one with Overdrive - thanks for the observation on this ... I find mixing guitars a struggle and appreciate this. I mastered this track in Logic, having just found the full mastering suite - I need a bit more experimenting, which may help the output volume.

I really like Addictive Drums - I got BFD, but it crashed my computer. AD has less kits (about 6 I think, but the effects make it sound like there are a lot more, and you can mix and match), but a lot of control in mixing the tracks and effects. On this song, bass and snare drum/ cymbals/toms are on seperate tracks. I think the software was about £150 - definately worth the money.

Thanks for stopping by Mason - nice to hear from you.

AD
yeah, I can tell that the drums are separately tracked instead of one loop with everything on top of itself. Gives the song much better depth. I've been working with Drumcore lately, and while I'm about 85% satisfied with it, it's a pain to route the drum tracks and it also doesn't include any midi fills, so AD looks like a great alternative. From the sounds of this song, it should work a treat.

Sweet Cheeses Make Me Beautiful
Alternative chorus idea # 1.

Steve, your vocal performance and production are always off the charts. You and willywagga really put a great song together. It's so energetic and does what rock songs are supposed to do. It Rocks. You have such a great voice. Man!

I still don't know how in the world you heard willy's original version and pulled this out of it?

You are a true Rock Star.

Ad!!
hey Bob - actually, i think the chorus would make a great jingle or TV ad - ....'insert brand here' makes me beautiful!

Like 'Sweet Murphys makes thing beautiful' ... we could make a fortune! It's a winna!

Willys song had 3 chords, so its set just at my level.

thank you, after everything, for stopping by here ... the door is always open.

hi man!
Hey Shimky - where you been??? Been ages since Funeral ... you got more songs in the pipeline?

I used to work with a guy who said 'The worlds your lobster', and 'I resemble that' (instead of 'I resent that'), and always wanted to use that line some place.

If this song made you smile, its done it job.

Thanks for dropping by ... don't be a stranger!

Hiya
Just been very busy at work, not worked much on music since the funeral or listened to much macjams output.

But... I'm waiting for delivery of my new Mac Pro on Friday and then I've got a week's holiday to mess around with it. I'll finally be MIDI'd - it was all acoustic until now. I can't wait!

Your line "the world's your lobster" reminded me of the film Scarface (I don't know if you know it) and it made me laugh to think that the would have used "lobster" instead of "the world is yours". Of course, if you don't know what I'm rambling on about, you'll just have to see the film. Very violent, though - be warned!

Adios!

Fun lyric
Hi CC - yeah, I must admit, the lyric was written pretty fast , but the ideas were circulating in my head for some time. I think it's a funny song, but the wish, or desire, of the narrator, is quite serious and gives the song a different side. More luck than intent I have to say! I was going to write this more as a straight comment on the person, but I think it works a lot better taking their perspective.
Thanks for stopping by and commenting.

Many thanks

Quality stuff mate :-)
So many replies already. You're a star, and no mistake !

Dunno what I can add.

Operation or no operation the vocals are excellent. Production is great. Lyrics and melody spot on. Feck, I'm running out of things already said.

Superb job. Deserves every hit it gets and more.

Powerful
Lyrics are right on with a lotta folks that age before they get chewed up and spit out by life's hard realities.

But many in this the world thrive on this optimism being there to taste once in awhile, even if it's not their own anymore. These dreams of youth, beckoning them to recall their own early days when all things were possible.

The old look at young in fond rememberance, afterall, they are hope for a better world too.

echoroom said 3820 days ago (June 4th, 2007)
Too cynical
Hey Damien - its easy to be cynical about such things, and that was my initial reaction. But when you're that age and the worlds full of possibilites, that's what your outlook should be.
It's a part of us that can get knocked out by life, which is a terrible thing .... the ability to dream, to be naive in this way, can be very powerful .... it can give a clearness of thought and ambition that cuts through all the b.s.

Really appreciate your comments - thank you.

Steve
so sorry I'm late to this party (my brother just got married and it's been a circus! I even sang at the ceremony).

I love the music. Will be listening to Willy's original. For your part, I think you made the right choice not making your song an explicitly judgmental one, but taking on the persona of the 15 year old instead. We can make fun of the young for being image obseesed, but the adults have a role in this social pressure, too. A big role, actually.

I love your voice. Take care of it.

The world is my lobster, ay? I guess I've had enough of school, then : )

Circus!
hey 'Ella - coulda been worse, he could've got married IN a circus. So you sung at the wedding - how cool is that - what did you sing??? Covers, or one of your own songs. You should've recorded it!

This was a 3 chord thrash, and a lot of fun to work on. I'm still flitting around with our potential collab, but keep getting distracted ... currently working on an odd track that sounds like a bluesy version of Portishead ... sort of.

Great to hear form you!

nice. i see the velvets in the sterling morrison guitar rhythm, the melody and the back-ups, but what happens is that your singing is so damn good, it ends up sounding more like a bowie or roxy music type of song. great track, i could see it coming after "satellite of love" on a mix tape.
