Township Jig

Description
Another Las Bragas track recorded about 3 years ago (posted coz we did a great gig last weekend and the music's still buzzing around my head).

As is often the case with our stuff it's a melting pot of styles. The title is a sort of pun - there's a style of music from South Africa known as township jive and the bass line here has got that feel. The fiddle sounds a bit cajun in the first section and then breaks in to Lark in the Morning (an Irish Jig) so there's two time signatures going on simultaneously. All in all a rather rumbustious number.

KK

Personnel:

Electric fiddle - me
Guitar and keyboards - Eddie Parry
Bass - Gaz Phillips
Percussion - Jim Rutter
Drum kit - Darren Collett-Mills

Image: Ted Brewer Vivo electric violin - just like mine!

Ah yes!
I'm envious of you being able to do stuff like this live Martyn. Closest music to this in my experience would be cajun, but I can hear a touch of South African music for sure.
Nice playing all round, and well recorded.

Sadly...
...Las Bragas don't get to play live that often and there have been times in the last couple of years when I've thought the band had ceased. However there seems to be a renewed buzz these days and we even did a practise recently - the first in about 4 years!

very nice
Very cool the way pop and traditional music blend together.
Great job. Is there any chance of maybe adding vocals to something like this?

Las Bragas...
...tends to be an instumental only band which doesn't float everyone's boat I know but generally we're quite tight live and seem to win people over. We do have one vocal number and I'm thinking of adding one or to more but as we rarely rehearse it might take some time before they're actually part of the set!

Many thanks for listening and commenting.

I've never been sure...
...why we do what we do in Las Bragas but we do and it seems to make sense!

Thanks for listening and commenting

very nice
being a metal head, i would love to hear you distort that thing and give us an absolutely meltdown shredd solo....i know you can do it!!!!!!
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!
i digress... great tune, not my usual fare, but the talent cannot be denied!
Komrade K said 3683 days ago (June 22nd, 2007)
Actually...
...we do do quite a heavy track live (hasn't been recorded yet) and there's lots of distortion on that, come to think about it, the effects unit gets well used in a lot of numbers we play live these days...

Thanks for braving another genre, listening and leaving a great comment!

I'm imagining...
...Fairport Convention (with John Kirkpatrick) trying out for Paul Simon's Graceland-era band...

You're getting a very nice tone from the electric fiddle...again... I continue to be impressed with that tone, having tried to get a good tone from electric fiddle years ago and never quite got the sound to my satisfaction...

I love this sort of playing. I can hear Lark In The Morning, and I can hear the township jive influence in the bass at the beginning... I can also hear a lot of fun...

Ed
Komrade K said 3683 days ago (June 22nd, 2007)
Like your notion...
... of Fairport and JK trying out for Gracelands - of course it they had been part of the band there probably would have been a morris dance number on the album as well.

It was a great session when this track was recorded - I was on a roll improvisationally and found myself having to learn the sponteous bits for when we played live.

What
a fun, lively, and enjoyable listen. - midway through in the percussion break, could almost fit a Jamaican aspect to it, maybe that's the African bit you refer to?

Anyway, this is a great listen. Did I say enjoyable? very much so.... Thanks

. - Harold
Komrade K said 3678 days ago (June 27th, 2007)
Well we do get a bit reggae-ish...
...from time to time but really the township jive/African thing is more to do with a style of music originated by displaced native South Africans in what are known as the townships. Music from the Carribean has however had a significant impact on many African musicians and quite possibly 'looped back' into the music of the townships and helped give rise to the style.

Well it was fun!
...and still is as Las Bragas seem to be gigging more these days - hell we'll have played 2 gigs this month (I think we managed 2 in the whole of 2006!) and we even practised the other weekend (first time in 4 years!) I'm hoping Las Bragas might do some more recording in the not too distant future.

Hope you enjoyed the Guinness!

I seem to remember...
... that most of the band (including me) were bleary eyed when we recorded this (on a Sunday morning) and I'd had a black coffee transfusion! I guess the music took over...!

Las Bragas don't do anything but...
...happy. Well okay we have one bittersweet number but even that turns into a psychedelic jam so people forget how it started. My natural tendency is to do sad reflective stuff so perhaps I find playing with Las Bragas an antidote!

Cheers

my windows are still shaking of the maximum of volume i played your tune on. i see my self sitting in the cosy corner of cosy "the small bridge bar" in dingle, just in the epicenter of fantastic irish music storm smashing all the pub completely with wild crushing waves of flaming irish jig! and in the middle komrade and his glowing red fiddle! brilliant!

It is fun...
...to play with Las Bragas, musically we're all into different stuff but as musicians we jell really well. Maybe it's that diversity of musical background and interest that makes it work. Also we've been playing together for years, the band's been going for about 15 years but I've only been with them for 10 so I'm a newbie!

catchy jig. Like how the percussion snaps in time with the fiddle.

Like the almost steel drum effect and the list goes on. Nice bass licks too.

Great! Great! Great!

I love it when anyone mixes any two wildly different styles together, but you've done it with two of my favorite styles in the world- township jive and Celtic. Very Cool! I love it!
