Description
The Jamestown Settlement just celebrated 400 years here in Virginia. This is a song I wrote from the viewpoint of a young man in Jamestown, writing a letter home to his wife and young son.

Lyrics
Did the North star betray us all
Sextant tipped by the devil’s hand
Four months of the boatswain’s call
Sure don’t look like the promised land

Susan Constant was a fickle bride
Just o’er a hundred feet from headsail to stern
Not much of a carpenter, but God knows I tried
To keep her shipshape for England’s return

My father delivered the message
The New World beckons, will you answer the call?
What I thought was a rite of passage
Turned out to be nothing right at all

Dark strangers in the backwoods
Faces painted with suspicion
Offered us venison, but I don’t think they would
If they only knew our mission

I was sentry that December morn
Musket raised as the chief drew near
Powhaten’s men with arms full of corn
Another day on the first frontier

My wife delivered our first born son
But the New World beckoned, and I answered the call
Time in my life I just wanted to run
In Jamestown, learning to crawl

Captain packing up the fort today
My heart just leaping right through my chest
Only to fail me when we heard him say
“Men, we’re heading West.”
“Men, we’re heading West.”

So a letter to my son, Thomas
The New World beckoned, and I answered the call
What I thought was a land of promise
Turns out, there’s no promises at all.
There’s just no promises at all.

A very good original song.
I like this song, and I'm not into folk music. Great lyrics and fine guitar playing. I would have liked to have it mixed just a little differently for my tastes, but on the whole a pretty darned good mix.

You did a fine job on the song, and you can justifiably be proud of your work here.

Thanks for sharing this with us.

Intimate historic honesty
The details of this history folksong are so human and honest they relate to today as strong as to the past. Marvelous lyrics. Wonderfully authentic performance.

This is an incredible tune
You are very good story teller. This one really touched me.
how are you recording, what's your set up? If you have 2 mics you might be able to get an even richer sound from your guitar by aiming one at the 12th fret and one at the bridge, then hard panning the tracks. But there's nothing wrong with what you did! Like I said this one really touched me, thanks
