Late Night Blues

Description
A slightly (or very) weird blues riff followed by a slightly (or very) weird improvisation. The result of staying up too late.Dedicated to a very mean guitar instructor that I had in college. On my 1st lesson he asked me what key I would like to jam on blues. When I replied "A" he rolled his eyes and scoffed at me.(I later learned that jazz guitarists almost always played blues in Bb or F- "A" is a lowly rock & roll key).As we were playing he stopped me and told me that I was playing the wrong chords(I was playing sort of Chicago blues 9th chords)He then demonstrated the "right" chords by playing about 100 chords all up and down the neck...anyone who can guess what key this song is in gets a free download!

Chords with numbers...
I believe we have spoken to you about this before, Mr. Stunkel...

And what's this about guitar players playing in Bb or F? What nonsense is this?

G, C and D are tried and true... You want to get fancy, you add in Am, Bm and Em...

I trust we will not have this discussion again...

Holy Moly Canoli!
Forget about your hands...how's your back gonna hold up playing an ax like that?

;)

This is great, Mark...I think your sadistic instructor would have approved...kudos, amigo...

BTW
I had a similar instructor. Complete snob of anything other than jazz. MADE me play in Bb and F...the beast!

Helps out when I play with horns/reeds/keyboards, though...

Actually
I probably would have gotten an F minus for- 1.Playing a solidbody guitar 2.Playing without a pick 3.Bending strings and 4.Playing in a rock & roll key.

This just goes to show you
that a really good guitar player can hit "any chord" or "any notes" on the guitar, and make it sound like it was supposed to be there. Unusual to say the least, but also very very good Mark.

Oh yes I almost forgot to tell you, Mr. Hannifin is correct in his assessment of the progressions allowed on the guitar.

I can remember one time I was playing guitar in a very swanky night club one time, and all I was playing was a Cmaj7 chord. I played it over and over and over for the entire song. When I finished playing this guy comes up to me and ask me, "is that the only chord you know how to play"?

Well, I said to him, "you know those other guitar players running up and dow the neck playing all those other chords, Well they're just looking for it. But I've found it, so I play it.

Great work Mark, thanks for posting.

I think
I've heard that joke somewhere before- that's a good one!I actually know what Ed means about the chord thing-a good song doesn't have to be complicated.I just enjoy messing around with chords- where else but macjams could I get anyone to listen to a weird blues like this?
Thanks for your support- I'll try to use Ed's chord rules for my next post!

Mellow
Your mellow touch disguises your efforts. This is really nice, especially liked your intro and wonderful MISTified(as in wizard-like) fade-out. Nice touch on the end there.

How is your carpo-tunnel these days, we can't afford to lose you here. (look up Alexander technique yet?) I know they got instructors around Boston).

Thanks again for your mellow blues.

for your comments.I looked into the alexander thing a bit-it seemed a bit expensive. This hand problem I have isn't carpal tunnel-it's a very weird pain syndrome that nobody seems to know much about.I will probably try the alexander thing at some point. Thanks for your help!

Any Key
is the right key for me when you're playing Mark, love those slightly discordant sounding ones too. All this about the right and wrong chords reminds me of a brilliant pianist I knew, who said she not only played all the right chords, but the beer stains and cigarette burns as well, and they ALL sounded good LOL. This of course is brilliant as usual and it all sounds so-o-o easy, cheers M

Blues
Well, there's a pretty fine line between jazz and blues.Thelonious Monk plays blues-so does John Lee Hooker. They are both equally great.I called it blues cause it follows the blues form.
Also I was making fun of jazz snobs who shun the easy keys-I love playing in E,A,or open G!

Mark once more time...
When I remarked on this beautiful song, I typed in A plus....and I see now that the little plus sign did not appear. I had no idea what key it was in until I read your comments..ha! It was supposed to be funny and now I see that I look like some sort of smarty pants. LOL...the song is still an A PLUS!!!! +++++

Six Fingers
When I was a kid there used to be a toy called six finger. It was a plastic finger that shot plastic bullets-I remember by accident shooting my Mom in the eye-she had to go to the emergency room.(She was O.K.)
Actually most of those chords are easy to play.A7#9-frets _x05520,D13 move the same shape down 1 fret-x04410,E13 same shape-0x6630.The same shape can be played at x011 1180 and moved up or down 1 fret.(Each number stands for a fret,x= don't play.)Also x011 800 is a cool chord.Of course they are fairly useless as the tend to make people run away screaming...thanks for your comments!

The story . . .
The story is almost as good as the track, Mark!

I think he just did not want you to think you could jam on your own, without the proper guidance. Jazz has got to be taught and learned through the proper channels, you know. :-)

Your playing is just great! I love the section with the walking bass and the chords playing at the same time. Was that one pass? Sounds like two, but with your chops, I would not be surprised if it was one.

Your style reminds me of Chet Atkins. He was just wonderful.

I recorded
it the same way I always do-straight thru. It's just 1 guitar. There are probably some mistakes in there but I just went with it.
Chet was a great guitarist-I recently saw a compilation dvd of him playing on old tv shows-you never see any musicians like that on tv anymore!

Wow LB!!
I wish I could play like that! I wanna be able to sit down with my 'coustic and just tweedle out a tune like that. This tune is sweet and the playing is sweeter. I'm going to download this and study it. And it is in the key of A. I never took any guitar lessons. My dad gave me a Mel Bay guitar book and I just went for it. I'm going to break it out and see how to play like this in the key of A!!

cool
Wow, what lovely guitar. I've been comping along with my basic jazz shapes designed for Bb blues and guess what...you were playoing in A. No surprise there, then. But I think I have cracked why the blues is played in Bb on the piano and sax, clarinet and trumpet (the latter two being Bb instuments anyway) is that the nut gets in the way on a awalking blues. Move everything up a semitone and the problem disappears. This is probably why Bach wrote his Toccata and Fugue in D minor... He tried it in C but kept knocking his ashtray over!

Great stuff, and thanks for dropping round my humble spot.

I thought Bach wrote the Tocatta in dm because he was using a capo on his organ. He actually played everything in either C or Am and used a capo to change keys.
