The darkest days never seem to end
They chain together and they wrap around your head
You should know better but then again
You start to see yourself a native in this shadowy land
Don't let it define you
Don't let it define you

You can bend to it's weight
you can close your eyes
you can call it fate
and let it decide
Oh you can choose
to let it define you
Don't let it define you

Who you are is more than this event
Don't let it tell you otherwise, Don't let it creep into your head
When your world feels like it's growing dark
Just remember you have the power, you are the maker of the spark
Don't let it define you
Only you define you

You're not a patient, you're not a victim
You're not helpless to the situation
You're still the one you've always been
I know you're scared but in the end
it can't define you
Don't let it define you
Don't let it define you
Define yourself

Sounds ....
.... enhanced to me Peter. What a good song - love the way you strive for perfection. Vox sound superbly recorded/treated.
Couldn't ID the changes, just sounds good. Very taught sounding kick, and a lovely snare sound (the rolls work nicely - or are they parradiddles?).
For the record, the cellos sound better on the phones than last time :) More space for them perhaps?

THanks for giving the new version a listen and comment. I made lots of little changes but not the sort that jump out if you aren't really aware of them, but I think they all add up to an improved listen.

It's still great...
...only now it's more greater...

It reminds me of some Richard Shindell's work, in a good, hope-in-a-sometimes-dark-world kind of way...

And also reminds me of Daring & Stahl's old version of the folk song 'The Mermaid', just melodically...

Your vocal is so strong and arresting that the rest could be pretty rough and ready and you'd still carry the song, but this manages to be a truly polished recording that doesn't lose the edge...

Better Definition
in this one. Subtle, but effective.

Well done, Peter. ;)

Love it
There's a little bit of Michael Penn in the vocal inflection & the moodiness which I really like. This is great -

Wonderful Song!
This was my first listen, and what an enchanting song. An important message that does not hit you over the head but sweeps you into an emotive space. The vocals are very distinctive with that rough edge, yet highly polished....A definite download for me....THANKS! Peter. May you continue to write songs which motivate and inspire.....Peace, Norman

Excellent song.
Are you using keyboard at parts or distorted guitar swells? a nice mystery sound with a nice texture.

well defined vocals!

Thanks, Vic. Actually, it's a combination of guitar swells and some processed midi instrument swells and effects. I do a lot of bending and warping.

Oh, man
I missed the previous version of this so this is the first Greenstone track I've heard in a long, long time (with the exceptions of the ones in my iTunes library).

This is fantastic. Really.

Just from the opening guitar line I immediately knew that this would be a notch higher than most of the other stuff on MJ. I was right.

Now I just can't wait to get home and download this.

Wonderful to hear you again.

wonderful Entre
So good to stumble upon this, Peter... as others have already mentioned, many many great things going on here that make up a very intimate and gripping song.

-vox: Your singing is perfect for this (I heard a teeny touch of Jethro Tull, of all things, though the R. Shindell reference is dead-on)

-lyrics: Very apropos subject for my teenage daughter just now, and always a mantra of my own, very well captured/written.

-cellos/strings: perfect placement, having them add weight and longing in little spots here and there, great orchestration.

-wailing spirits: those flanged synthy wails that come and go really caught my attention, not overdone, but a nice understated sound of "the demons calling you back under".

-ebb/flow: The way the music & drums build and fade give this a real emotional rollercoaster feel.

I'm very impressed with all aspects of this, awesome work here!

This is a truly
outstanding song - great lyrics, full of smart, insightful ideas. The sound is excellent - the drums, bass, and guitars sit perfectly in the mix. The string sound fits nicely. What's most impressive about the song, however, is the vocal performance. Your singing here is outstanding. Very impressive work. Kudos. Peace.

Your Taylor sounds beautiful. The mix is perfect. My only gripe is that the crash cymbal sounds fake. The strings are an awesome addition. I also love all of the atmospheric elements. What software did you use for the strings? This is great Peter! Did I mention how crystal clear the mix is. Stunning!

Sir PETER, this is a masterpiece. This is my favorite type of songs that I always wanted to play ... I'm impressed by the guitar playing and the vocal. Really top notch piece. Loved the cello line very much .... NOTHING WRONG ABOUT THIS PIECE! KUDOS!

Take Care

Thanks, Steve. Glad you like it. I've been so busy with other things the past months that I haven't written or recorded anything new in a while. I do plan to record a couple more tracks for my next album which I hope to get out in the next few months.
