Eye in the Sky - the Lost Finale (with Mike)

Description
This is a rework of Dr. Evil's Laser that was originally done for the lost songs project in the Alan Parsons grand progressive rock style. I wanted to try an experiment with some new software samples including the drums from Kontakt and the choir and horns from East West/Quantum Leap. My son Mike also helped with a new guitar track that he mixed. This version is cleaner than the original and slightly different in impact.

This song is dedicated to Greg Tucker, a good friend and university housemate who in those days was a real Parsons fan (and maybe still is).

You are a quick one!
Thanks for your supportive comments as always my friend. I was working on our collab and did something that seemed to randomise all the MIDI notes for the chorus! :o( So rather than re-enter them again I thought I would finish this piece which had been sitting around for a while. I plan to get back to the collab today!

All the very best,
Doug

The Mayan Panoramas on my pyramid pajamas...
Ahhh... Alan Parsons Project... I loved a lot of their stuff too (mmm... the sound track to one of my favorite movies "LadyHawke".) You did capture a lot of APP elements here, the strings, choir and french horns. The harmonies were unusual, but did give a sort of modern-day-progressive rock feel (would that be "Leap-Prog"?)

Return of the Dragon punster... :o)
Hey, thanks very much for the comments! Yeah, the harmonies are kind of wild and swirling, which is my take on what some of Parsons did (although I suspect he put his choir tracks through a chorus or flanger or some such treatment to give the effect which I went for with dissonance).

Thanks for the listen!

Take care,
Doug

Powerful stuff Doug.
Certainly brings to mind Parson's work.Lots of wonderful elements.Love the fullness and richness of sound but to short to completely satisfy.Well done.

Thanks for your thoughtful comments!
It was fun, but yes, it was short as some extro pieces used to be. I am working on some longer pieces for the Hero's Journey Project so I will be testing my creativity to develop a cohesive theme and variations.

Thanks again for listening and taking the time to comment!

All the best,
Doug

Another 'too short'
which I take for a good thing in your comments. Perhaps some day I will revisit this again and see if I can fill it in in all its Parsonesque potential glory. Or do an hommage which is more like an intro, which feels like there is more space ahead into which to compose vs. and extro piece - which doesn't make sense, but there you are.

Glad you thought this was an improvement over the original, and thanks for your supportive comments!

Cheers,
Doug

Yes, this is a pretty classic sound that for me, you, and many others here is not about to fade away from memory any time too soon.

Thanks for coming by to hear the new mix!

Doug

Outstanding
You captured the Parsons sound alright but still kept it as your own...really enjoyed...but much to short, and a better ending would be worth thinking about...
Doug Somers said 3507 days ago (February 12th, 2008)
Thanks Dave
I can certainly feel the pressure mounting to do a longer version, which coupled with the strong endorsement of this piece is really appreciated feedback. I had originally conceived of this as a short extro for the record but maybe there is room to grow it a bit. I'll turn my thoughts to a longer version as space opens up when I get writer's block in the Hero's Journey Project pieces I'm working on.

Thanks again Dave, much appreciated.

This is cool from the get go
lIke the use of the choir, the percussion add a great deal to this. The trombone fits in quite nicely, the flutes are great to hear. Enjoying this has I am typing. Nice use of the break drums as well. Like the high noon guitar. Your choice of instrumentation is very nice. Nice fade out.

The was enjoyable!!!!!!!

Thanks Bill
Glad you liked it! I wanted to dust it off the version I did for the lost songs project and I ended up with a bunch of small changes in making this incarnation. I will admit that the instrumentation and overall arrangement is so heavily influenced by Parsons' style that it is more his work showing through here and not mine. Still, it was fun to do and was a good chance to play with some of the new samples I bought.

All the best,
Doug

Really glad you liked it - not quite the driving electronica you do so very well but it does suit the Parsons style.
