Poor Wayfaring Stranger

Get Flash to see this player.

Description
First post out will be Poor Wayfaring Stranger, as I (Curry) remember there have been dozens of posts on that tune here, (though there are only five now).

Starting in a minor key the song later transmutes in some strange way over to a jam in a major key, and the style turns into almost jazz. With these guys I never know ahead what is gonna happen.

Setting:

Björna - vocals & mandolin
Björn - bass
Johannes - guitar

Great Vocal Accent
What a better way than for three wayfaring strangers, beginning their new travels together plucking to a fitting song like this. Loved the improvisation. Wouldn't it be cool to go to Curry's house and partake.

tasty stuff
I really like hearing what you play inside a group setting... you make great choices, and the restrained frosting that you add is perfect... tell us a little about your process... are you guys playing around a mike??? ect...

recording is fun, but there's nothing better than getting with friends and playing... excellent job

.
Strongly agree with both you and Feter above. Nothing like feel the friendship
pickin togther, nothing better than getting with friends and playing.

The process:
We are sitting in quite a small livingroom. I have tried to make the room a bit more isolated by a thick rug on the floor and a mattress on the naked wall behind, as a primitive backdrop. In the middle of the floor are the Golden Age Project R1 microphone pair. We put them about face height because our instruments often louder than our voices. This mic has a figure-8 directional pattern for wide sweet spots both in the front and in the back of the microphone. Thus we can sit on both sides, having the mikes in the middle. Distance to mics are about 1 to 1.5 meters.

We appreciate these mics for their natural character. After getting used to them, I can get disturbed by the "electrical" character that condensor mikes, even quite good ones, add to the sound. The Golden Age Project R1 are the cheapest in the line and didn't cost me more than approx $450 for both.

Really sweet tune.
Hi I am very happy to see you wayfaring strangers
found your way to this site Macjam.com
Otherwise I for one- would have missed out on a really
great song.
You all created of the cuff so to speak. Sometimes thats the best way. Because its spontainous comes from the heart and from the moment. You sure sound like you were all having fun too. Well done you guys and thanks
for sharing.

Peace Dee.

Fun
Thanks for letting me know about this, Johannes -- it sounds good, and it's obvious that you guys are having a lot of fun. When the mandolin solo comes in towards the end there seems to be a difference of opinion as to whether this is in a major key (mandolin) or minor (guitar), but then you work it out (you agree to continue in major) ... is that what you guys were chuckling about?

Hope to hear more!

Another one for the collection
"Wayfaring Stranger" seems to be a perennial favorite among MacJammers, and every one of them is SO different from the rest! There should be a page for all of them (Sorta like Feter's Woodstock page).

Thanks for the latest jewel in the collection.

So nice to hear
All those real organic instruments. The bass sounds especially good to me. Your group sounds a lot like an American "bluegrass" band to me. Great guitar as usual.
I enjoyed this tune! All Gods children are perfect in there own way. Regards

Bluegrass
You spotted our bluegrass nerv. Yes.

We haven't intentionally thought of this as bluegrass. But I played in a bluegrass band some 35 years ago and have noticed that bluegrass is still one of my strongest musical influences. I still love listening to bluegrass. Furthermore Björna is playing in a bluegrass band today. And I think also Björn has joined that band recently. So whether we are concious of it or not, it seems like the bluegrass is slipping through. And that is a good thing. I am glad you heard it.

I love this -
You captured the feeling of playing together with friends so very well. You have a really great ensemble, here. Nobody is showing off or ducking out - you really support each other well. That switch to the major key near the end is really a sweet surprise - maybe for you guys, too :) and you really came up with some fun stuff there.

Genre Bender!
This fits right in with the old genre-bending acoustic sets from Bela Fleck to David Grisman and Jerry Garcia. (And others I simply can't recall or don't know at the moment and will hit myself for omitting.) It's just the kind of thing I miss about periods of jamming decades back, such as when I'd hang around the Old Town School of Folk Music in Chicago, particularly in the 1980s. (Not that you know the place, but it's worth a plug. They're still there and have grown into a local giant.)
