Description
"Amorosi miei giorni"
Music by Stefano Donaudy (b. 1879), lyrics by Alberto Donaudy (b. 1880)

Today as I dove into a bit of spring cleaning, I had no idea that I'd unearth an 'ancient' cassette tape in a random box. I discovered it was a tape of one of my college recitals--I'm guessing my junior year. ( I unfortunately do not know who the accompanist is for this recital.)

As I simply recorded from the cassette over my condenser mic, the quality of this sound file leaves much to be desired, but because it is representative of my early days of singing, which I later completely abandoned, I thought I'd share it here with you all.

There is something very surreal about hearing yourself years ago...About what you thought of your voice at the time (and how it wasn't always kind), about the thrill of taking the stage to sing for that moment, and yet knowing--even at that time--that performing was not the place you truly belonged in life. About days where you were so connected so totally and devotedly to a discipline that required so much of you and your waking moments.

Music is a much different place for me now. As I first listened to this file, I listened as a music teacher might--hearing where my vibrato might have been more free, where my voice was 'covered' or the placement was not quite right, where I wasn't supporting the breath, or where--for a moment--I had found the perfect placement after all.
And then, as the critical part of me took a back seat to the listening, I remembered the immense joy of singing a song so absolutely beautiful as this is--and how it literally brought tears to my eyes in those days that I could express myself so fully in such beauty.

Twenty years later, it is the latter part of this that I have kept, and my 'return,' as it were, to music, has been so little about technique and yet everything about expression, gratitude, and love.

We never really know where some of the paths we follow will take us on life's journey, but I am so grateful that somehow, I found my way back to singing. I no longer sing with the discipline and training I worked so hard to master once upon a time, but I can honestly say that I sing with every bit as much passion and love and joy for the voice I've been blessed to enjoy, and for the music to express it all.

:)

how wonderful to go there with you.

your voice is wonderfully strong, confident, multi-colored. i'm only now at a very ripe old age of 57 discovering hints of "perfect placement" - and you're right - it can make you cry. amen on the joy factor, sister!
that was great,

Mystified!!!!!!
I'm in the virtual audience, here at MJ's and I've just heard you finish this beautiful peace of singing, I'm stood up now, clapping vigorously and shouting 'Bravo!! Bravo!!'.

Apart from that I find it amazing the sorts of talents that others on MJ's have and this confirms my thoughts, in a wonderful way.

Take care.

misty eyed
is where this left me. I always sensed you had this formidable background. I found this to be moving and beautiful. The sense of a lo fi recording only added to its exotic flavor.

after our hilarious chat last night, and hearing your story, I just had to come and listen to this again. Which means I had to weep all over again - but it was worth it! Your voice was exquisite then, and is even more exquisite now!

Lady!
This is so amazing! I absolutely love your voice! I only wish I could download this song and put it on my ipod for my hideous commutes on the LA freeways. It would surely soothe my savage beast!

Thanks for sharing it with us!

Nice to hear something from the archives
Very beautiful singing and that little cassette captured it nicely. It's nice to listen to how the youthful energy and exuberance plays against the maturity and gentleness in your voice now. Different but both beautiful.

Lovely singing Cat
Sounds like a long lost gramaphone recording of a major operatic diva! Beautiful singing!
Blimey...back in 1987 I was still learning guitar and mucking around in a tape loop experimental band called The Teenage Cleopatras with one David Griffiths...I wonder he still has the tapes of that hehe?

Thanks for sharing

Beautiful instrument
As you might imagine, I listen to many recitals and performance juries every year. And yet, I never get tired of it; there are so many talented young people around, and I regard it as a privilege to hear them, and hear how they progress from one year to another.

What's clear to me from this recording is that we are hearing a beautiful, WONDERFUL instrument (your voice), one that captivated me from the very first note. Your audience was obviously completely wrapped up in the emotions you were projecting, as we are at MJ's, 20 years later.

I'm not sure why you decided that a performance career was not for you, but I can tell you that the sky is the limit with a voice like this. Very impressive, very moving. Thank you.

Proudly!
You certainly sounded like you were on the path of the performer!
Your voice is beautiful and filled with life! In this recording it's much easier to hear the voice, it is the focus.
Although I am not in anyway an expert in this style of music, your technique sounds pretty solid. Sure you can be knit picky but it's good to hear that now you just see it as another part of the joy of singing. All things aside, you sang this piece beautifully!
I'm sure you made your parents very proud!

Very Well Done
It may have been twenty years ago or twenty minutes, but it is very good and something you should be proud of. I'm glad you pulled back from the technique in your critique and decided to share this piece, because the overall effect is very good.

Thanks for posting.

BRAVO!
Wow! Bravo. Just beautiful. What a voice. I'm so thrilled with this real time connection to music and the people who make it. What an honor.

This song is reminiscent of one my very favorites, "Wally's Aria".
I'm just... overwhelmed with the talent here.
