Suddenly There Came A Tapping

Get Flash to see this player.

Description
Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered weak and weary,
Over many a quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore,
While I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping,
As of some one gently rapping, rapping at my chamber door.
`'Tis some visitor,' I muttered, `tapping at my chamber door -
Only this, and nothing more.'

--Edgar Allen Poe (opening stanza of) "The Raven" 1845

Thank YOU!
Always good to see you have stopped by any song of mine. I worked hard on this one tweaking it over the last couple of weeks and just finished it last night with some minor touches.

I can imagine
this as part of a cinema soundtrack. Has a great feel to it and of course excellent production. Great listen Bill.
Cheers

thanks birdman
What kind of a bird is the birdman? maybe you are the raven Poe talked about in his poem? :)

Are you familiar with the poem that inspired this song?

Rapping
Wowsa, what absolutely excellent production. This sounds absolutely stellar on my monitors; the space is incredible! I'm looking forward to my second listen on headphones. I can tell it's going to be an amazing sonic landscape.

What a very cool idea to use the rapping of a bird's beak as the musical metaphor underlying this whole piece. It reminds me of the piece you did a while back that was based around a single "C". I can't remember the title, but it has always stuck with me as one of the cleverest concepts for a song (as well as a really great song). The guitars sound terrific here.

One Note William
The kit sounds fab in the headphones!

Thanks for the visit
Interesting how this came about. I was really interested in doing a "dark" piece using a bass sound and tempo that was similar to one I had heard on a VincentBluesky collaboration. Came up with that sound and then it all clicked when I came up with the opening rhythm "taps". Knew where I wanted to go from there and just tweaked it all 'til it was the song I wanted. Then I tweaked it a bit more ... and a bit more ... and a bit more.

That piece was called "One Note William Live At Carnegie Hall" . I'm glad you liked and remembered that one.

importing
is it simply because what you are trying to import is in the MP3 format. I could send you a link to a CD quality un-compressed version of this with any mix you want.

Very easy on the ears!
Not much I can find to criticise in this, except that it really needs a classy vocal. If Anne Cozean was still at MJ (SISTERS) I'd suggest getting in touch with her to add what's needed. Maybe you could try her over at SongRamp.

Very cool blues, but screaming out for a vocal.

Good suggestion. I have no lyrics for it really but maybe someone will pick up the idea and run with it. Always open to collabs even though I always check the other boxes.

moody dude
you gotta put this over to Open Collabs - and get some vocals sung over top of it.

this has great mood - very inspiring

i woke up this morning
and i think i know i heard
a tapping on my door
looked out my window and saw
this bird

the notion stuck with me
all through my day
every phone call, every email
through the words i couldn't hear what
they say

Moody
There is a mood to this which is exactly what I was after. I think it fits my mood lately and maybe that is why it came together so easily and well for me.

I may revisit it with some collabs. lbstrat is interested in perhaps trying something with it ... that could be awesome.

than you Tiler
The more I think of it, I might consider some lyrics that try to capture the feeling of the poem. I might try to write something that starts with the tapping, sort of skips the middle section and goes right to the crazy. Sort of an abridged version for people who already know the poem.

Anyway ... thanks for the use of your ears for a few minutes.

Time well spent Bill,
an excellent production her my friend. This one going on my fav list and my iPod. -

What a cool trip to take along with you and Mr Poe. There was one part when the "Guitar" lead first started, that it almost sounded like you were actually playing a mandolin instead of a guitar and then running it through the amp simulator. Very cool indeed if that's what you did, but an excellent guitar part never the less.

Thanks for sharing this one, I can see why you would be proud.

I like
this probably more than any you've done, though I like them all. It's just the instrumental variety in this with the various wonderful sounds. I took Ledeb's advice and listened with headphones...... love when the sax(?) came in and the winding down sound later after the tapping. Fantastic musical imagery. Great stuff, regards M

I love
Poe, great soundtrack groove for the Raven. In Chicago here recently there is a bird attacking people, very Hitchcockian. I guess this bird has gotten to at least 10 people and pecked away at their heads....

thanks for the comment
I'm really pleased that you made the comment about the song changing. That is one of the goals that I have when putting together a song and mixing it. That is, I hope that there is enough interest in the piece so that on repeated listens a person with trained ears can pick out something different and interesting to follow and that the mix is such that they can pick the different elements out but put the elements back together to form a whole again.
Perhaps your comment says more about your ability to listen than my ability to mix, but I thank you for the comment anyway.

:)
