Description
'Amanda' is one of the first songs I've ever written, but it's never been recorded - only played live. I've always liked the song because it gave me a chance to get a little self-indulgent with the guitar soloing. Sometimes I'd take multiple rotations of solos during the song just to get it all out. I don't think the other guys in the band really appreciated it, but I sure did :)

The original version of Amanda was played as a straight-forward 3-chord rock ballad, so I decided to give it a bit more of an epic treatment for this recording - adding a cathedral organ, piano, some foley, and a bit of a filter on the vocals. It still has a big solo, but nowhere near as long as when it was played live.

I recorded the guitars, keys, drums and vocals and sent it off to Michael, asking if he'd be into adding some BG vocals. He sent it back the next morning (!) with said vocals, a boy's choir accompaniment and a beautiful warbly mellotron outro. He really put that 'epic' finishing touch on it that I was looking for.

For some reason this one was really difficult for me to mix & master. I think it sounds pretty decent but if you have any suggestions to offer, go for it. (Just know the 'scratchy' sounds are supposed to be there).

Lyrics
Amanda
What are you doing to me?
Amanda
Why are you running away?

You left me here in the dirt
Broken and bleeding, on bended knee
In the garden you were planting the flowers
And when I turned around you were gone
Too far to see

The seeds fell to the ground
And you ran without a sound from me

Amanda
Who are you seeing now
Is he a little like me?
Amanda
Where are you living now
And who're you trying to be?

I'd really like to see you again
Are you the woman I used to know?
I really think I lost my best friend
Why don't you tell me why you had to go?

These trees can't breathe without you
This soil is sand without your touch

Amanda
Are you with another man?
Amanda
Does he love you like you know I can?

Nice to meet Amanda
I suppose the Scratchy sound evoke an old vinyl record and/or memory, but I wonder if it's not a bit too much. Obviously you think not, so that's okay with me.

kind of eels/sparklehorse feeling in the singing.

Nice build-up when the solo kicks it and the organ helps it gliding downn down beautifully.

Did I say it was beautiful song ? It's a beautiful song

scratch
thanks cj. yeah in retrospect I think I could have eased off on the vinyl effect during the choir as far as the cracks and pops, but I do like them on the end strings.
I'm on a huge Sparklehorse kick right now, so that comparison doesn't surprise me. Definitely take it as a compliment.
Glad you think it's beautiful. Thanks for listening.

very nice
the mix turned out great, really good. i like the balance of everything now. i had a great time playing along with this one. how did you get that slide sound? i like the way it sounds very much.

great job man. i got no constructive criticism (gave it all before you posted this).

slide
thanks for the collab and mix input. You really brought this one to where I wanted it to go with your additions. for the slide parts I tuned the G string to B (I like to play all my slide parts on the G string for a beefier, dirty sound) and dialed in some light distortion and phasing. I used the middle pickup for a bassier sound.

can i have a backsie?
i didn't realize the strings (mellotron?) were in there so early... with the choir i guess. as you know, i love the idea of the vinyl fx (sound like an old school sample), but perhaps saved for the higher outtro strings - at 5:58.

awesome song. cool guitar wanking, hehe. :) like all the levels... very dynamic.

haha. NO backsies! kidding. The mellotron does come in at the end, but I tried the vinyl on the choir too. Maybe I should have eased off on the dust and scratches there though. Glad you like it scott. Thanks for the mix help. I'll probably send you a tweaked mix soon for more input if that's cool

holy cow
another great one from two of the most talented macjammers IMO.
I'd love to know how you get those rich guitar tones.
really like those harmony vocals too, intensifies things perfectly.
even though distorted vocals are usually a turnoff for me, it sounded good on this one. still I wonder if I'd like it even better without the filter tho...
...of course the song is king, and this one rocks. keep the tunage coming lads!

I use a POD XT Live almost exclusively when I'm recording guitars, but the tones have a lot to do with my Firebird. I've never had or heard a better sounding guitar for dirty tones like this.
Michael's BG vox are awesome. I had them really cranked at one point cuz I liked them so much, but he politely suggested I turn em down a bit as they were overpowering my lead - which I guess kinda defeats the whole idea of BACKGROUND vocals hehe. Still, he did an amazing job.
As far as the filter on the vocals, it's kinda a concept thing. This guy's leaving a message for Amanda, so it's meant to sound like he's singing it over a phone. Regardless of concept though, I don't think the song would be as good with clean vocals. It just gives it a distinct sound I really like. Glad you think it sounds good. Thanks for stopping by.

totally agree with Relic - when two of the most talented MJ'ers get together, watch out. This is one of the finest songs I've heard recently, or maybe in a long time, or possibly ever. ipod - trip music. thanks guys

thanks karen! I REALLY like working with michael. We seem have a lot in common when it comes to musical instinct and taste. We both work pretty fast too so collabs are painless and enjoyable. Really glad you like this so much! I see you've posted a new one. Off to check it out now

deeply moving
and very simply, classic pink floyd. i meant it as a compliment
the partly whispered vocals, are dreamlike, and exactly what the song asked for. almost like someone who is devastated, and between thoughts of suicide, and self loathing, he dreams of her, and whispers in his sleep all the things he cannot say aloud. great spase mix.
this one might suffer with a big, ballad production. for me, it seemed more like an interlude piece, and i would like to hear part two of this song. it needed very little productionwise.
when the guitars kick in at the 4:15 mark, you take off into wakeful depression, as if he has been shocked awake, and sits head pounding, solo kicking his skull into shards.
wow. there are few songs out there i download, but this one i am.

i noticed
you spoke of the xt live. a very good machine. i have recently upgraded to the x3 live, and it is so badass, i can hardly sit still when i play. it is like i have heavy metal add.....
i wanted to ask if you use gearbox when you record. i use it to tweak tones so i dont have to bend over all the time to adjust every little thing. in addition, with the x3, i got a ton of extra tones not in the box... so it was a win win to DL monkey, and gearbox. just a tip, my brother...

Wow...
I have nothing to offer mix wise. This is hauntingly beautiful. I especially like what RazorsKiss had to say about it. This is moving, and soulful. Anything outside of backing off the vinyl effect shouldn't be done. This is one of those times when in it's current form, the song is most powerful, because it has a raw edge to it that lends to it's overall honesty. I had no idea it was 8 minutes long till I looked, and thats a good thing. I listened to one just before this that was 7 minutes, and I felt like it was 7 minutes that I'll never get back. This on the other hand makes me feel like I have invested those 8 minutes. Definitely worth the download. Thanks you two you have something here you can be very proud of.

Put together
From the operator to the last note when It comes to your songs Its always A treat to listen and learn.YA know I think the only change would be to maybe change the low bullhorn sounding lyrics to something else but that is only subjective and it follows the guide lines of opinion. Again a well thought out song. The build up and lead are a special touch here I know you think your band might not have thought so but in all honesty how else could you express the feeling of wanting the object of the song Amanda. I knew an Amanda once she was one of the most beautiful girls I ever came across long brown hair and green eyes but thats another story. Great song thanks! glad to here the phone fx at the end sort of a hang up !

phone
thanks ego. i did put a bit more thought into this one than I usually do because of the fact that it's a fairly simple progression. it plays out well live, but the record version needed something more, so i went with more of a conceptual treatment, which michael immediately identified and augmented with the choir and strings. the phone fx at the end are just that - we hear the beeps of the tape ending the dial tone and the phone of the hook alarm, then yeah the hangup. I'm a sucker for foley in songs - blame it on my dad for playing 'The Wall' cranked every Saturday morning when I was growing up :)

ALWAYS look forward to yours. I think that was a great idea to spruce this up instead of playing it straight. Love the choir sound. The vocals were stellar my friend.

nice
Really dig it. A real shoe gazer with an awesome kick in the pants. I agree with others about the vinyl pops, but enough of beating that horse. I also think that the volume shift downwards out of the first crescendo is a bit severe, meaning the quiet bits are a bit low in volume in comparison IMHO. The song has some real smoothness as well as bite. After all the talk of the solo-ing in the description I was ready for some real self-indulgent noodling, but it's pretty short actually, I would have pulled out the stops and twanged it all out like you were playing live--anyway, downloaded before it was half through playing. Nice work.

wow, it's hard to believe this is a macjams post--i've purchased songs like this. i'm partial to the deliberate low-fi quality of the production (i don't find the vinyl effects to be overdone), but with a professional studio treatment this could be something you'd expect to hear on a pop cd.

best,
-=ez

Top post!
Not sure if I've been listening to too much heavy bass recently, but the bass track's not all that defined for me - it really only shows up in a few parts as a distinctive entity. Then again, I guess it's a kind of sound wall sort of song and the bass becomes part of the wall.

Sometimes the simplest songs work the best, and this is a really good example of that..

Sorry, I don't mean this to be negative - maybe I just need to get my ears cleaned. I really like this.

Neil
