Doing The Necessary

Description
This one turned out to be quite melodic and laid back.

Production wise, this follows on from my last submission with more live bass, (hopefully) a better sounding acoustic guitar, and some more experimentation mixing percussion samples (from the Symphony Orchestra Jam Pack) with "EZDrums" - which I'm loving (very good IMHO!)

Now I've got a decent microphone I'm also enjoying playing around with backing vocals - not always 100% successfully - but with some pleasant results in places!

Hope you enjoy the result - and please PLAY LOUD as it's mastered fairly quiet.

Let me know what you think -
Cheers -
Phil

Lyrics
Doing The Necessary
(Music & Lyrics by Phil Dolby © 2008)

I’m doing the necessary to make it better
And take control of the lies you’re telling me
And I’ll do whatever’s necessary to stay committed
Exposing all of the times you failed to see

(chorus)
I feel it too
It doesn’t make much difference what you do
One and one isn’t always two
These little things that we do
These little things that we do

I’m making a big decision
I’m switching channels
And holding out for a new reality
But they’re showing the same old repeats
The jokes aren’t funny
But boy, the punch-lines are really killing me

(repeat chorus)

(bridge)
Just when I thought I was winning
You got me on the ropes again
And just when I thought I might give in
I punched below the belt
It isn’t fair, but it’s the only way to win
I punched below the belt
It isn’t fair, but it’s the only way to win

(repeat chorus x2)

Wow
You've got a sensitive ear for embellishing sound. It's a gift. All those little accents are great production-wise. The little music box sounds, the at times ascending and at times descending bass during the chorus and other places, the echoing drums/boxing type sounds near the end (fitting for the lyrical content of the song) - all of them add something special to the song. I'm impressed!

Thanks...
..Estella. I appreciate the fact that you *really* listen to the tracks and notice all those embellishments I've spent hours working on! Makes it all worth while - thanks again -

just like me
We share the same genre it seems. I loved the brass...Yes it is mastered quite. The bass seems just a bit low. But the writing and playing and singing are very well done!!

This is a nicely simple and clean production...
...and it succeeds at delivering a nicely simple song...

I like the bass playing, and was surprised by but really loved the brass...

Great vocals, and I really like your lyrics. Again.

Weirdly, listening to it, I could imagine a more over-the-top and Ziggy-ish rendition, a Spiders From Mars version...

Thanks Ed...
Glad you liked the brass - I popped 'em in there as an experiment, then was gonna take them out, but then couldn't live without them. I'm never sure that the midi samples actually sound like brass - but am actually quite happy with them on this track. "Ordinary People" by Neil Young is one of my all time favourite tracks, and I love the way he punctuates that song with brass - my template (hahaha!)

very nice
really nice song, and it just sounds so good. really nice. between you and Jim Bouchard, I really want to get EZ drummer. love that guitar part with the chorus, really there's too much cool stuff going on to pinpoint everything, but you are a master at all the little things that make a song stand out. great track.

Thanks Michael - appreciate your comments, as always.

EZ Drums are great. They really suck your processor dry, but I'm only working on a 2GH MacBook, so if you've got anything a little more robust then they should be fine. I'm only just learning how to use them, but they have the flexibility to alter individual drum sounds, EQ them and even change the spec of a single drum within each kit. Plus, the expansion packs (seem) great. No I don't work for them :-)) Definitely worth checking out....

Thanks again -

great songcraft
great job Phil... I really like how you mix up the relationship metaphor with cultural observations... nice word picture analogy... great way to find that "new way to say it".. did you play the bass on this???... excellent... your vocal presentation is relaxed and coversational... nice folky touch...

excellent production... those huge drums in a different environment are a surprising choice toward the end

Hey...
...nice to hear from you Scott -

Yes, that is my bass playing - all my own work! It actually took me ages to get anything that sounded reasonable for this track - in the second verse I had this idea of a JJ Burnell grumble bass, but it ended sounding quite lite and folky. I think i'm one of those bass players who is actually a guitarist - so I don't really know what I'm doing until I've done it - so to speak!

Thanks for the comment -

Nice one Phil!
Love the bass! Very neat production, very much in line with the style of song - which to me is more "alt pop" than "alt rock", but that's REALLY nitpicking :)

I like this restrained approach. Its really easy to get carried away with the tools available and go for a big production inappropriately (mea culpa!), but you've held back remarkably well.

Cool post, nice lyrics. For the next CD?

wow
This song is great. It's the kind of a song that if you heard it driving around you'd wait in your car to hear if the DJ said who it was. The chimes, the brass, the percussion. So many positives and not a single negative. The mix is so wonderful. If I voted, I'd give this a 10. I'd even get Nigel and we'd go all the way to 11.

Very
well mixed song with good instrumentation. I liked this piece a lot. My main critique would be to have more fun with everything! Sometimes it seems like you are trying to sing things with perfect timing and phrasing. Just sing it out!! And if a few things are a little off oh well. And if a few things bother you, you can do more takes! The horns were also a little bland. Otherwise I enjoyed this piece a lot. Thanks for sharing and adding to my music library!

These little things
Diggn how this has it's own sound that seems to be meant for this tune only. Don't remember hearing anything else of yours and maybe it's just your sound. It's a rainy Sunday melancholy kinda day tune. It also has a nice professional feel. Very well written/performed and produced. Don't know how this is gonna sound but, your singing voice is very listen-able as in, it doesn't sound to be trying TOO hard to be something that it is or isn't and you don't sound like you're singing what might be your last performance. That happens too often. Very pleasing to listen to. Seasoned comes to mind. Way diggn' how you bopped a little groove in there w/ the percs too. Lots of cool perc stuff happening. And the bass... It's all good.

Okay, so, I guess was diggn' the whole scene here mister, Dolby. Thanks for your efforts on this. They certainly paid off.

Nice
Nice match between lyrics and music. Simple, but very effective. I like the way you sing little with an emphasis on the tt, cool. Incidentally - you are very lucky to live in Switzerland, I visited there once - Bern, Interlaken, Geneva etc, but didn't get to Basil. Fantastic place.

rich
This track has some real depth. The bass is particularly rich. The horns are also great, very believable. Your bridges and the descending noodles on the guitar really make it. And the harmonies, magnificent ,it really builds to quite a tapestry at the end. A kind of laid back quiet drama anthem, how's that for a contradiction!
