Lock 'Em Up, Knock 'Em Down

Description
I've been waiting to put this up so that it will still be visible when the last days of the Bush Presidency come to an end. Unfortunately I'm going to have to find something else to inspire my song writing now that both Bush and our very own "Man of Steel" Johnny Howard have left the political scene.

The usual country leads, pithy words and breathy vocals played/sung using the usual instruments and the usual setup.

I hope you like it!

Lyrics
Knock ‘Em Down
© 2008 Neil Porter

Its time to knock down some big statue
Lock some folks in a foreign jail
Make some playing cards with stupid names and photos
Lock ’em up, knock ‘em down

You set the whole world up for failure
Changed it all for you and me
Even down here in Australia
Your demise looks good to me

Lock ’em up, knock ‘em down
Just keep them out of my town
Lock ’em up, and throw away the key
Sounds like justice to me

SOLO ON VERSE

Lock ’em up, knock ‘em down
Just keep them out of my town
Lock ’em up, and throw away the key
Sounds like justice to me

We don’t share and care no more
We just add and we subtract
We’ve come so far down this bumpy road
I can’t see us turning back

Corporate bosses fly their jet planes
Sell their workforce down the drain
I’m so hopeful that the new guy
Won’t let this by again

Lock ’em up, knock ‘em down
Just keep them out of my town
Lock ’em up, and throw away the key
Sounds like justice to me

I'm glad the humour came through - wouldn't want to sound bitter and twisted :)

Always nice to connect with you - herzliche Grüße aus Australien!

my mother told me if i couldn't say anything nice...
... but then, that was before the decider came along...

you know, Neil, I've been watching this guy lately and for some reason, my feelings towards him have shifted from a full on rage packed w/ a loathing disdain to mostly, empathy. Normally I'd say something like, why hasn't the family intervened to have him committed, but you know... This man really is on a different planet and he has convinced himself and a few other haters that he's done a great job w/ his part here. I've resolved to feeling sorry for him, but I'm quite positive that it's because his time is up. Poof, be gone!...

Another great tune Neil. I'm not sure why someone hasn't bundled up all yer political stuff and made ship loads off of it. But that someone hasn't been wise enough to figure out that all your other makings is some pretty excellent stuff too, so there ya have it... Thanks for hanging it out for the free grabs. Hellova deal Cheers! Macca

Cheers Macca!
Thanks for the nice comments.

I did feel some sympathy for him ...... after all, how's he ever going to find such a nice house in the current economic crisis?!!

Cheers,
Neil

This R O C K S : )
You done it agin Neil !!!!! WOW this sounds sooooo G R E A T - YIPPY !!!!!!
A definate fav, I think they say 'tight sounding' - Very !! : ) One of Your best its so greatly recorded too... "Lock'm up & knock'm down ; ) " reading the comments & i can just agree with Macca & Dirigent !!! You're AWESOME tx for giving my morning a taste of HOPE - can't wait for the MJRF & to Bush retirement....wow can't believ the guy could sit for so long, managing to put so many the American People(&others) in the lie going behind there back or however u say in english . You know I read what he wanted to remembered for & 2 things I recall very clearly - one was knocking off Saddam(freeing the Iraki ppl from Him as he said) & two - he wanted ppl to know he hadn't made any decisions without consulting God - sounds more like Iran or somethin to me . Scary !!!!! Religion & Politics.... Killing in the name of God in whatever religion is whacked /insane.
TX for dl too !!!!! Have a great year.. : )
jiguma said 3236 days ago (January 15th, 2009)
Lena!
Without going into too much detail, I wholeheartedly agree. I'm wondering how the 100,000 Irakis who are no longer with us feel about being freed from Sadam. Religion and politics definitely shouldn't be mixed - the current situation in Gaza is a prime example - more on that later.

Thanks for listening and leaving a note Lena - always appreciated.

So beautifully said, my darling.

And Neil, fantastic performance. But I can't wait for this particular "inspiration" of yours to be gone ;) !!! Yay for tomorrow!!!

You'll find other things to write about. Just as brilliant, I'm sure.

Full
of pleasing sounds. Fun, gritty message with excellent music to back it up.
I really like your breathy singing style as it suits the song so well but also lets the music shine through. A great blend of vocal and instruments.
Nice one

Heh
I'm gonna stay out of the debate! I certainly know I would not want to be Bush leaving the world in its current state in the history books...

I don't think I'd want to be Obama either. The first black president has a BIG FIX on his hands. The price for failure is huge.

But Neil... great tune. You some how crank these out!

Great Sound, and if the rest of my family wasn't just waking up, I'd be playing along;-). Love the guitar and the composition! Sounds like justice to me too. Good Riddance, George.

If this playing
is anything to go by, it seems maybe you're goin' to be 'top dog' now Bush and Howard have gone..... I always love your lyrics.... and the rhyme 'Failure' and Australia' was enough to bring a big smile to my lips. The rest goes without saying of course.... a quality performance all round, cheers M

Magnificent
Great lyrics. You really have the touch with this kind of song - topical, political, pointed, and, let's face it, tinged with humor, which I think is the key. Seems to me there are only two ways you can go with this kind of subject matter - you can be very, very serious (e.g. Tramp The Dirt Down by Elvis Costello - which still brings me to tears when I hear it - or Robert Wyatt's Shipbuilding, also covered by Elvis) or you can maintain the dark sense of humor which has kept people going in the face of lunatics for centuries. You do the latter so well; I still laugh every time I hear Throw Your Shoes! Great singing, lovely guitar work, and a really nice driving groove. Nice one, man. Peace.

I think it's astounding that we don't hear more music through the popular channels of this topic. I would welcome this on the radio.

I enjoy the
feel of the new guy giving us hope in your tune. Like the ending as well. You know it is tough for us avg citizens not to be effected by what happens to us. We can't just go off turn off everything. He has got a pretty big i'vory tower sort of speak. And I get by easily with out reading things or hearing things against him.

I feel that a good trait he has is that doesn't seem to jealous of Barrack. But it sure seems like the whole US system has been given a big body blow to the stomach. I sure hope that Obama can get us out of this mess.

Thanks jig for the folk rock artistry ! Again, great ending as well, nice singing. Like the commercial feel to this.

Note to self:
Whatever else you've been listening to, TURN DOWN THE MONITORS BEFORE PRESSING PLAY ON ANY OF NEIL'S SONGS...

'T's all right... The ol' ticker came through it...

This tune rocks, it has something to say, it has great drummeristical turnaround moments, and I LOVE your lead playing on this... Overall sound is open and airy despite having in-your-face presence....

Continued competitive envy sort of thing going on in the Telecaster department...

bye bye bush
jeez, neil - i started jotting down my favorite lines, and ended up writing down almost the entire song.
you truly know how to draw a bottom line lyrically. musically, this cooks - dynamics are great, and it happily churns along with its energy. good singing - i can tell you are sincere!
enjoyed,
anne
