Workin' Man

Description
The idea for this tune came after FlatRock2 dug back in my catalog and made a comment on Working Class Day. I listened to the song for the first time in a long time and decided I might go back and rework it. Instead, as I started work, I got the idea for another tune along the same lines. A sequel, if you will.

I've worked on this for several weeks, but never could quite get things right. Finally, I decided to just sit down and get the thing recorded the first time I had the time and the space to get it done. Today was the day.

This is definitely a commentary on our times. Even with the hope of help on the horizon, these are still dark economic times.

This is a first for me, I think. If I remember correctly, this is the first song I have done completely in Logic Express. No GarageBands were harmed in making this song. It's going to take some getting used to and I still have a lot of stuff to figure out how to do, but, yes, Lisa, you were right. Now that I'm getting used to it it's just as easy as recording in GB and switching over.

Lyrics
Working Man
©2009 Joseph Gurner

Late one evening, they shut the gate
We punched out one last time

Tears roll down thinkin’ ‘bout 20 years
Spent working on the line

Grim faces go to humble homes
Where familes wait for the bad news

So much pressure rains down every day
Seems there’s nothin’ left to lose

Keep on lookin’ but the jobs just ain’t there
Keep on hopin’ against all hope

I pray for the change they say is coin’ on
Right now I can’t see the light

All I wanna do is
provide for my family
Is that too much to understand

All I want is
a chance at the dream
Let me be a working man

In New Years another corporate man
Kicks back in his designed shoes
He smiles in to his ice and gin
He don’t care about the news

Another bank goes down the drain
Another bailout from the workin’ man

But the money keeps on rolling in
He’s gonna get all he can

He don’t worry about the jobs we’ve lost
They’re just number on a page

A few bucks saved on the bottom line
Another bonus in the bank

All I wanna do is
provide for my family
Is that too much to understand

All I want is
a chance at the dream
Let me be a working man

You try to fight it day after day
Life just pins you to the ground
All you want is dignity and pride

All I wanna do is
provide for my family
Is that too much to understand

All I want is
a chance at the dream
Let me be a working man

Very Moving
commentary on the way things are going for lots of people at this time and you've got it all across nicely wrapped in a suitably haunting melody with really nice vocals, regards M

I've been lucky
In that my job is fairly safe from the economy's problems, but I see and deal with people every day who have been affected and it really makes an impact.

Thanks for taking the time to listen and comment.

Great
This sounds really good. The guitar has a nice washing vibe to it, and some of those fills are lovely. The real strength of the song, though, is the lyrics - real, evocative, and beautifully expressed. Some really nice lines ("Life just pins you to the ground" is my favorite...) and real stories that absolutely carry you into the lives of the people involved. Excellent vocal performance too, and nice job on doing it in Logic - sounds really nice. Nicely done - music for the times. Cool. Peace.

Thanks
I've really had fun experimenting with Logic's guitar options. Lots of good stuff there.

The lyrics, well, if you watch the news at all, I find lyrics like this write themselves.

Thanks for listening.

Wow
Totally excellent. Funny I just did a song for the times. Seems like we all are thinking about issues.

I like logic a lot. I probably use 1/100 of the horsepower but man it is nice to have all that fun stuff at your finger tips. I just wish I had more time!

This came out great. Nice guitar tone except I found it a little biting personally almost like it was clipping a tiny bit. Vocals were great!

Song of the times
Troubled times bring out the best in art sometimes and, boy, have we all been through it in the past few years. Ah, to go back to the days of writing silly little love songs...

I'm like you. I barely scratch the surface of Logic. I learn little things every time I use it and then promptly forget all those little things I've learned. I still need to figure out how to get my keyboard to work with it.

There are some guitar "issues" that due in part to learning Logic, but also getting used to my new setup. Hopefully, I'll get them ironed out.

Thanks for stopping by!

I only wish it didn't hit so close to home. It'll take a while for this one to wear off. Thanks for posting.

Down telegraph road...
Has a bit of Dire Straits feel in the melody, lyrics, singing... I guess that is an appropriate double entendre for this song. Here come the harder times, Joe, I hope we can all work through this without really bad stuff happening. Great song that puts those thoughts squarely in front of us. I would only suggest boosting the vox, at least in the beginning, they seemed a little far back.

Go Joe (or should I say ...
... Lothar the Amazing?).

Cool song - nits up first (sorry). That drum loop is great for the first verse, but the 16ths on the hihat/tambo(?) with that repeating open/close hihat is beginning to bug me in verse 2. Apart from that, a really nice song, very well produced in Logic (it gets easier as you use it more). My suggestion would be to redo the kit track and remove some of that busy-ness - the feel in the choruses is perfect.

Lyrics are very good indeed, and I imagine there'll be a few who can relate a little too well to them. Overall, a great contribution Joe.

Cheers,
Neil

Topical
and, yes, it hits really close to home. Lyrics are really solid. Your delivery is also great. I was expecting more 'rant', but then I realized how much more powerful your understated vocal delivery really is. Nice sound in the instrumental section, too. I like the sound you have on the rhythm guitar.

Pretty good there sir
I like it. The singing, lyrics, and rhythm guitar are all great.

Although in all honesty, the solo guitar in the beginning sounded a split second behind the beat. That was my perception and I could be wrong.
