Shenandoah (MJRF)

Description
The first version of Shenandoah (May 2005) was pretty much done in an afternoon, and I've always wanted to redo the vocals. So, with the MJ Reunion challenge, I decided to do this song right.

Throughout the past several months I've been having vocal challenges resulting from eosinophilic esophagitis (Google that if you dare!) and its treatment. I've always considered my voice a gift, and so I consider the fact I was able to, throughout three recording sessions, get some vocals that matched my hope for this song, a gift.
It's also been a gift to be able to record and share so many songs and collaborations in the past 4 years here at MacJams.
In the meantime, I'll keep singing--carefully--with gratitude that places like MJs have made it possible to create and share music that I love.

Thank you for listening :)

Changes in this version of Shenandoah:

Changing the basic piano to JamPack Symphony Steinway instrument.
Rerecording all vocal parts, including a new 3rd chorus voice.
Remixing in Logic Studio 8.

Giving an old song new life
I redid an old rocker for the festival - it was great sprucing it up!

one thing I like about the event. It has motivated people to go back to stop putting off a revisit to an old tune.

Hi Misty.....
This song is a gift to us here at Macjams.

I enjoyed it tremendously and particularly enjoyed the naturalness? and lack of multitrack'd voices on this one. The freshness of the song came through very well.

Take care.

Paul

PS - I Googled and can only offer sleeping on your left side as opposed to your right, as less acid can creep up to your throat from the stomach that way. I hope things ease somewhat with this condition.

This bodes well for the Reunion Festival. I was really excited to click on your name and see that you'd redone Shenandoah. Your original version of this is one of my favorites of your songs and one of my favorites on the whole site, actually. I'm truly sorry to hear of your vocal troubles, that seems so wrong, though your voice sounds LOVELY (and that is exactly the right word) here. There's a beautiful yearning to the way you've sung this. Just gorgeous. The piano sounds fabulous, too.

Shenandoah
this is a classic ...your treat it with so elegant piano that when
your voice flow over it ...the passions glow as a light on a dark night
the very distant strings were a medicine to the whole view ..maybe one
of the best vocal work you ve done for a while ...the choir is a perfect
touch ..thank you so very much for the gem !!!!

Exquisite poise
Sorry to hear you've been having health issues with your voice, Cat ... I can only imagine how stressful and frustrating that is, but as you say, it helps to focus you on what a great gift the voice is.

I like the soft and understated intro. And then the song itself sung with immaculate poise and control. You're really in your element with this material, esophagitis notwithstanding.

I remember this when it was first posted ... what a lot of water has passed under the bridge since then.

What I remember about this....
...is that Ziti loved it. He was crazy about it. He made me listen to it, even though I already HAD listened to it....

What I also remember is that I remember feeling like odd man out 'cause I actually didn't much care for the original version, although many people did, and did a lot.... Something in the original vocal bothered me...

And then there's this, which is terrific and captures the sweetness of your voice, and has everything... the phrasing is so perfect it aches... the pitch sounds effortlessly perfect....there's nice air to it all and it sounds alive, alive, alive...

It seems to me in the time that I've known you, Mysti, that all of your strengths have sort of naturally and organically uncoiled... You started out with GIFTS, but you've been wise in the growing of your gifts...

I am very sorry to hear that anything is troubling you or your voice, much less something hard to pronounce that's going to send me to Web MD on a research mission... I'm sending good esophageal vibes your way....

Beautifully sung and mixed

.. some small changes in the vocal melody reminded me of "The Wild Mountain Thyme/Will ye go lassie go": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hKvB3g3HEPQ, a personal favourite, combined with much more contemporary kinda ballad for a musical. The haunting backing vocal and harmonies are very nicely done: I think though some more conventional harmonies on the lyrical lines would have sufficed perhaps .. and I don't hear much "New Age" under my conception of that genre, was expecting something quite different... more folk/pop/ballad.

I'd love to pick your brains on GBv3 with Logic Pro 8 for inter-operability (as I'm thinking of upgrading myself sometime in the near future).

Thanks for the listen- perfect with my morning coffee.

Lovely Rendition
I'm sorry I found this one late, but glad I found it at all.

This is one of the sweetest, most heartfelt versions of this songs I have ever heard, conveying both the beauty and majesty of the river itself.

Very well done, Cat. Simple and elegant. ;)
