Description
So, the brief was to redo something from the first year, or write about something that happened that year. Well, the only song I posted in my first year (apart from the one I took back down again almost as soon as I'd put it up - the less said about that the better!) was Hoping for a Hurricane, which I just redid and reposted, so that left me with something that happened that year. So, I decided to write about finding MacJams. It was sheer chance that led me here, and a spirit of fraternity that has kept me around. This, then, is a song about this place, for this place, and dedicated to everyone here who makes this place what it is. Thank you, Simon and Miguel for making it happen, and thank you, brothers and sisters for making it magic.

Special thanks, of course, goes to jiguma; dude, this is a great idea. Thanks for putting it together and encouraging us all to join in. You the man.

I've kind of been squeezed for recording and mixing time recently, so this is not as tweaked and fluff-free as I'd like it, but I hope you get the idea.

Peace.

David

P.S. The picture is my original avatar when I signed up; my kids were bored one day and thought it would be hilarious to give me a mohawk. I think they were right.

Lyrics
Across the Wire

Slow down
Tell me, where are you going?
Tell me, why are you hiding?
Brother, what have you done?
You know
I can hear it inside you
Let me travel beside you
Brother, what have you done?

Hey girl
I don’t know where I’m going
I don’t know why I’m hiding
Sister, what have I done?
Hey girl
I can hear it inside me
When you’re standing beside me
Sister, look what you’ve done

There I was
Looking for something useful
What do you know
I end up with something real
And I was lost
Looking for something truthful
Now here I go
Ready to spin that wheel

I hear a mighty chorus
Like a thousand hearts on fire
The night is deep and dark but
We run free across the wire

Slow down
Tell me, where are you going?
Tell me, what are you hiding?
Show me, what have you done?

Wow.
This is beautifully recorded (even though you admit to not having tweaked it the way you'd like). The bass, guitars, and percussion are amazing. Are these all loops? You've glued them all together so seamlessly. I am very much impressed with the production and clarity of this whole number. Your voice, too, is terrific: so clear. In a "rock" song of this nature, one rarely hears the lyric, but you have managed to keep all the volumes UP and still make your voice clear as a bell. Wow. Very VERY nice, indeed. What a beautiful number.
Peace.

Thank you
Thanks, Paul; I really appreciate your stopping by and checking this out, and I'm glad you enjoyed it. The only loops are the drums; everything else is me! Glad you could hear the vocals; I actually had to double up one track (over the chorus) because it seemed a little lost in the mix. Thanks again for listening, and I really appreciate your nice words. Cheers, my friend. Peace.

Wow David
This is awesome my friend. What a powerful song and so much depth in the lyrics. Your vocal is clean, crisp and pristine, uncluttered with effects and just beautifully done.

A magnificent track David, this one on the iPod and in my all time favorites. God this is good.

Dude
Dude, you are way too kind. I'm really glad you liked the lyrics; I wanted to get across some of the wonder of this place without being too corny or direct. Thanks also for the nice words about the vocal sound. It's always a struggle to get the sound right, and it's encouraging to hear it sounds good to you! Thanks for taking the time to listen and comment. Much appreciated as always. Cheers. Peace.

outstanding
a very clear and up front mix, wicked progression, and your incredible voice makes this a real star. reminds me a lil of jeff buckley. super cool music. the guitars were all brilliant. there's also a real subdued b3 type track? or is that the gelling of all those great guitars. either way its tops in my book

Glad you liked it, and thanks for such a detailed and considered comment. The vocal comparison is very flattering! I'm just happy when I can sing in tune! There is an organ sound over the opening and closing sections; it's just the pop organ sound from GB tweaked a little to sound a little spookier. Not sure what I did exactly! Thanks again for listening and commenting. Much appreciated. Cheers. Peace.

Sorry about the deafening thing! It is a bit rackety at the beginning, isn't it! There used to be a quieter intro, but that fell by the wayside. Thanks for your comment on the lyrics, and on the singing. YOu are always so encouraging and supportive. Much appreciated, my friend. CHeers. Peace.

such a warm mix...
love the guitars and your vocal... smooth as velvet. Great production on this song. I like the searching, questioning nature of the lyrics. They fit the mood of the music quite well. Thanks for sharing your song.

Thanks, Jack
It's always greatly encouraging to me to hear that the words and the music fit; it's something I often do not manage to do, and I really strive to do. I have other songs (well, pieces of songs to be more precise!) that I cannot finish because I cannot come up with - not just words - but the right words! Glad you think this one worked out! As for the vocal, you are being too kind - cool imagery! Thanks for stopping by. Much appreciated. Cheers. Peace.

Sweet
Really liking the balance you've got going on with the guitars and bass during the main riff the interplay between them is great.... And gets even better when you add the lead later on.
Nice clean vocal too. No mud here!
dajama said 3181 days ago (February 3rd, 2009)
Thanks, man
I originally tried a different bass riff, but it just got too complicated and lost the drive. So I ended up playing basically the same thing with bass and guitar, and it sounded better to my ears. Glad you thought it worked, too! Thanks for checking this out. Much appreciated. Cheers. Peace

I've got an ego....
...but you're one of the guys around here of whom I could honestly say, "I'd be in YOUR band".... I like how you write and how you think... Like you need ME, right?...but that's not the point... I just fall right into your songs, and I can imagine what they'd sound like live...

GREAT guitar playing on this.... Another strong vocal... More strong lyrics...

I love the bass on this. Whatever is getting the bas into the sonic territory it inhabits on this song is awesome....

Well okay...
...I just saw the band haircut, so maybe not... But almost...
dajama said 3180 days ago (February 4th, 2009)
Two
Two things...

First, I can't think of anyone I would rather be in a band with! And second, you would totally rock that haircut! (It has to be said that my hair does not normally look like that; not sure that I could pull it off. I suspect my students would find it a tad distracting!) Thanks for stopping by, man. Glad you liked it. The bass was an interesting recording thing for me because I recorded the bass in two sections. The opening bars were recorded first, and that bass part sounds kind of different to my ears, even a bit lacking in clarity. But the rest of the bass I recorded later, and it sounds much better to my ears. I just don't know why or how it ended up like that. I wish I did! Glad you enjoyed it, though. Thanks as always for stopping by and checking this out. Much appreciated, my friend. Cheers. Peace.

Hi David
You amaze me with every post. I always learn something form the way put your songs together -this time it's the stereo effects on the guitars which keeps the mix so clear and how to end things because that acoustic tag is beautiful. The icing on the cake is that lead sound.
best wishes
Steve

Thanks, man. You're way too kind. I'm glad you like the mix; I'm never happy with any mix and it's good to know it sounds okay! And thanks also for the nod on the lyrics; means a lot coming from you who comes out with such great words. Thanks, man. Much appreciated. Cheers. Peace.

Amazingly clean, I take it you're still using GB? Your tracks are my benchmark for what GB is capable of. Are you using the GB guitar settings as an amp or another plug-in? As for the tune itself, wow. Great everything...lyrics, arrangement, instrument and vocal performance.

Still GB
Still GB indeed. All the guitars and bass sounds are GB settings. Glad you like the sounds I get; I just tweak and fiddle about until I find something that appeals to my ear. There really is no great method to what I do! I really appreciate your comments on the song, too. Much appreciated. Thanks for stopping by and listening. Cheers. Peace.

NICE
What a clean sound you have achieved here that makes for a powerful stage on which to tell your story. You have a lot of talents coming forward here, not the least of which is your vocals. And those wailing guitars. ...and the choice of drums... It's all great!!

Be well,
Doug

Hey, man. Great to see you. I'm really glad you liked this one. Thanks for the kind words on the song (and the recording). Love the 'wailing' comment. One of those guitar sounds I stumbled across and played with for ages. Makes any kind of twiddling about sound halfway decent! Glad you enjoyed this. Thanks for checking it out. Cheers. Peace.

Yes!!
That's a sick groove you break into! I like how you don't have any words over the first breakdown. Nice. It's like this song starts out as a folk song and then takes a turn into some nice rock/grunge territory. Your voice sort of reminds me of James Taylor with more of a rock twist to it. Pretty sweet! Your voice the way it's syncopated in parts also reminds me of Maynard from Tool! Great production. Everything sounds really warm. I like that! Great job!

Thanks for the flattering comment. The difference between the two sections of the song really comes from the fact that both parts came to me separately, and I kind of welded them together! The whole thing was written on acoustic and the riff that here is electric was originally acoustic, but then I started playing around with it and this is what I ended up with. I'm delighted you enjoyed it. Thanks, man. Cheers. Peace.

Hey, ADam
Thanks for checking this one out. Glad you liked it. The lead is a GB setting. It's a combination of British Crunch amp simulation, with Spread Stereo Chorus, and the Hi-Fi Smiley eq setting. I probably tweaked those a bit, though, too. Thanks again for checking this one out. Glad you enjoyed it. I loved your latest! Cheers. Peace.

Brilliant
those beats reminded me of the early Police. Sweet mix of gentle and harder guitar sounds, i really like how you have separated this song into it's coherent parts. Smooth productive quality, everything sounds crisp and clear. This is a great number, impressive lyrics and sung beautifully.

A very nice comment. I love the Police reference (who wouldn't?!) and I hear what you mean. Glad you also liked the sectional nature of the track. I was a bit worried about muddiness in the mix (and to be honest, I'm still not completely happy with it) but it ended up reasonably crisp for the most part, I think, and I'm really glad that sounded good to you. Thanks for stopping by and checking it out. Much appreciated. Cheers. Peace.

hey man
i have to say this is a great recording buddy! I really think the overall composition is deserving of much much more appreciation. Overall criticism could be on back up vocals, which are definitely hard to nail. but i think it could definitely use some extra thickness in there. other than that... wow. i just keep finding amazing musicians here.. you are no exception.

Wiping my ears off...
... and happily, blaming it on the g'tar on the first listen... Quite the stunning performance! Exceptional execution of vocals too! Weil..., that's to be said about the writing/performing/mixing/the whole of what's to be heard and whatever else is to known about it. It's all striking, to say the least.

So refined...

Sparsely yet, densely layered (it's not supposed to make sense...) and presented with a sense of restraint expected of one who knows what is to be known about it all...

It truly is an exceptional piece of art that you're sharing here, Mr. Mcquire. Just please tell me that it consumed all of you in the making and that ya didn't just whip this out during some measly disrupted space of time...

Kudos to you, regardless of how it come to be!

My most sincere gratitude, sir. Dion

You can rest assured that this was wrung out of me! The different parts came at different times, and there was a wonderful moment when I realized they would gel together. Well, as I guess you know by now, this is great!
All those commenters can't be wrong, and I agree with them. This is the first of your tunes I've heard and I'm really impressed (not that I'm a knowledgeable critic, or anything), and I'll be listening to more of your work later. The instrumentation and mix are terrific (the bass esp. as most agree), and the lyrics are wonderful in their indirect appropriateness. Also, you sing them well.
Thanks, and cheers,
Richard

Holy #@$!, this is great!
This has instant intimacy; the sound is very clean and that makes it a very easy listen. I love what you've done with this. The drums are tastefully used and the guitars are an amazing mix of sound and panning, and nice sustain into the acoustic at the end. Your vocal is superbly recorded; reminded me of another Minnesota musician (Peter Mayer). Sounds awesome on the headphones; can't wait to blast it on the loudspeakers during the daytime. Just a great job all around Dave.
