Description
Had this idea around the early 90s .. and it's been on my to do list ever since ..
and this is my first attempt at recording some of the ideas for posterity. :o)

I have a concept and lyrics sketch (that I've added now).. so I might return to this with more vocals .. and bass. This was just a stab at the bed, see where that led and to get early feedback.

For those with a good ear, the vocal melody is in there (played with a more digital sounding synth).

The coverart is a pic of an underwater sculpture by Jason Taylor.

Here's how it looks in GBv3 (just the vocal track cut off):

Of course, you can't see the plug-ins, track-automations or panning settings at
this size of pic ..but just the tracks/instruments. From top to bottom they are:

"Circuit dialog 1" (more digital. GB soft instrument) Panned L -8
"Circuit dialog 2" (more analog. GB soft instrument) Panned R +8
"Grand piano" (GB soft instrument) Panned C
"Orchestra Steinway" piano (GB soft instrument from JP4) Panned C
"Orchestra Wedding Organ" (GB soft instrument from JP4) Panned L -36
"Orchestra Wedding Organ" (GB soft instrument from JP4) Panned R +36
"Xtra Violin Sect 1 Legato" (GB soft instrument from JP4) Panned C (but Tremolo effect used to pan slowly)
"Kits" Drums on demand drumloops 1
"Kits" Drums on demand drumloops 2
"Kits" Drums on demand drumloops 3
"Kits" Drums on demand drumloops 4
"Kits" Drums on demand drumloops 5
"Kits" Drums on demand drumloops 6
"Booms" 1 Reverse guitar FX loop Panned L -9
"Booms" 2 Reverse guitar FX loop Panned R +9
"Booms" 3 Reverse guitar FX loop Panned L -18 (pitch shifted to follow song)
"Booms" 4 Reverse guitar FX loop Panned R +18 (pitch shifted to follow song)
"No effects" Real Acoustic guitar Panned C (Ozone 3 used on the locally)
"No effects" Real Finger click percussion

Master track has Ozone 3 on it... a tweaked version of the preset "CD master with Exciter and Widening".

It's a simple song going (basically) D, G, Cadd9, A.
Em, G, A.

Feedback, suggestions, collaborators welcome- just send me a note with your e-mail.

Enjoy,

/Alan

Lyrics
Thoughts wander into my open mindfield,
Only to get blown away.
Step by step and unaware,
Of the under-lying danger.

It's easier to be naive,
And say there's nothing you can't tread apon,

That can't get wiped like shit off your shoes.
Look over your shoulder- they're still there.
I hope that they'll be the next one.
But some will make it through.

Was there a time when this field was empty,
Or the thoughts were simply unaware.

Is it unfair treating everyone the same?
Or is it true equality?
Even as I speak- another thought dies,
But some will make it through.

As you get older, the field gets bigger,
But there's more perils within.
Are they better to walk a straight line?
Or to dance without a care?

It's a path best taken alone,
Who plants these mines, is it me?
Is it best to avoid- or am I scared to-
Take a step through one?

Feelings were the first to go- shattered into many bits,
So I lie (here) restless,
Sweeping not sleeping.

Quite late 80's, early 90's feel. Cool mix of textures and sounds. Nice touch when you double the pace of the groove. Thanks, I enjoyed the ride — very listenable song.

Thanks Thor

..yes, when I do go for using more loops in teh foundation of a song, I find I focus on mixing in different sounds and textures. Glad you liked the drum work .. it was kinda experimental in that respect .. deliberately not sounding like one consistant drummer .. but more a mix of drumming styles .. just to see if I could pull that off... certainly kept it energetic! lol ..

..ah well, you can't please everyone all of the time :) The "wo-ho"ing is a temporary measure and light-hearted .. didn't expect it to put people off :)

The music,
is so vibrant... full of life... and has a well balanced instrumentation. ( You can tell I don't know exactly what instruments I am hearing. Shh!) I thought you did a great job on the Woh-oh's! (I thought the sculpture was mimicking what a cubicle dwelling worker would like after a nuclear blast.... what's the point, eh?) You make me smile, Alan. Thanks.

I updated the lid for the curious, so you can see all instruments used in this. I see what you mean about the pic .. I saw several pics of the same ... earlier ones, before stuff had begun to grow on him .. I liked the organic nature of it, as the sculpture slowly becomes more living. It was this that attracted me to it's applicability to the song.

apb said 3142 days ago (February 16th, 2009)
Thanks very much Len

the drums did take a bit more time and effort .. trying to blend some multi-beats and switch in some varying drumming styles on purpose .. and trying not to sound too disjointed, if at all.

I kinda like straight regular drumming in a song .. but at the same time, I like that loops like DoD can give you possibilities to just plain 'try out' more bizarre combos just to see if they could/might work.

Glad you like the lyrical ideas too. See above- I have aquired some major vocal chords and looking forward to teaming up with SJ again- we didn't do half bad last time..

apb said 3142 days ago (February 17th, 2009)
Glad you enjoyed it Roxanne..

.. and thanks for the complement: it is a lot of GB machine help for sure. The first 6 tracks I played/performed the midi you see on my Kawai K1 .. the next 6 is chopped up drum loops, the next 4 are chopped up loops for that U2ish electric guitar sound (a native GB loop called "Reverse guitar FX") and the last 3 are real audio: acoustic guitar, finger click percussion and last and least, the "wo-ho"s. Choosing sounds that sound real, or tweaking the GB sw instruments to sound as good as they can does help .. I think people often forget they are very pure raw sounds and need to be tweaked to "fit", wether it's adjusting release times to just the right reverb, or some volume automations etc .. all helps.

I can't play every instrument type you hear for 'real', heavens no .. and I'd never manage it in 6hrs if I could .. lol.

You'll notice the "empty" Grand piano track above? I played in that at first, to record the 'vocal' melody .. then switched it up and duplicated it to the 2 tracks above (the Circuit Dialog GB soft instrument tracks).

I hope to hear how this sounds with the combined talents of Drew on bass and S.J. on vocals... still in the works.

I'm glad you also liked the pic: it's very intriguing .. something about that it's living sculpture in some way and changes over time... very cool... and kudos to the photographer too (who I don't know who it was- who got a really nice evocative snap with the sand being disturbed behind .. nice touch).

Hey APB,
I really like the contrasting feels. The change in the drum movements, etc. Like to shake things up a little. Very cool. However, let's address this "laziness thing" and get those lyrics recorded! LOL

I do tend to layer sound(s) for texture as you say. I like that full sound effect it gives.
