Description
You Don't Know... a slow, reminiscent, melancholy song. One that would signify a person who had lost something or someone and moved on from anger or immediate pain to more of an accepting but still disappointed state. Another thing about this one is the lyrics are actually quite literal in some ways. I was living in a basement studio apartment, going to school, slugging through the days, and basically just moving on, in a transition state. One morning I did wake up, I had the fading images of a dream in my mind still, the floor was in front of me, and the images and sounds of my dream just faded over the next 20 seconds or so. I lost them and they were gone. I rolled out of bed... and went about my business. But it kind of hit me that morning. So I ended up writing a song sometime later, probably in a few days or at least that evening after I got through my day. Can't remember.

What I don't like about this song as it stands:
There is some clipping on the chorus. I wanted the chorus to be very strong... with the multiple vocals coming with a strong harmonic unity...There are at least 3 parts I think maybe 4. But I pushed it a little and I ended up clipping. I find that distracting. Sorry.

I think it's a bit long. But I wasn't sure how to shorten it. It seems to want to be this long. I don't love it or hate it at this length.

Some of what I like:
I like the multi-part harmony even though it's a simple line on the chorus.
I like the dreamy nature, which was supposed to describe that half-dream state.
I like the occasional doubling, highlighting only parts of the verse. I hope they have the right effect on everybody else too. But who knows.
I like the interplay between the acoustic and the bass.

Thoughts??

Thanks.

Lyrics
Saw you talking on the phone
in a melancholy dream
I thought I'd given you a call
And you smiled at nothing for me
Found myself just staring at the floor
wishing I could dream it more
Wash the memory from my head
roll myself out of bed
just another day without you
I guess I'll be ok
Yeah I guess I'll be ok

You don't know me
You don't even care

All the things that I don't want to know
come down and cover me
I thought I'd have a chance to break the bonds
but something's always pulling at me
Find myself just staring through the dead eyes
of a man who's lost his home
Wash the memory from my head
roll myself out of bed
just another day without you
I guess I'll be ok

It's hard to know how precious are the lies
we share every single day
as users of this life we bide our time
and throw it all away

Thoughts??
maybe it´s a bit long. maybe....
but it does not affect my listen so much. you play + sing w/ emotion, with feeling.
and the chorus reminds me to ALICE IN CHAINS.... and i mean that as a compliment.
..also with the clipping: it´s a beautiful song... for me.

best from berlin

for you
Is all I can ask for brother! Thanks for coming. I take the comparison as a compliment. Not my only influence but I think AIC influenced me more than I realized. I also listened to Mad Season even more than AIC. That band was a little less dark and modern, a little more classic rock (ala Hendrix) but with more variety, and used a less vocal harmony (only one of the AIC vocalists was in MS). If you cross MS with Indigo Girls do you get something like this? Emotional but modern (and male)? I'm good with that! Peace to you.

Intelligent
I'll take this to be the traditional meaning, and thanks! Very huge compliment, though the emotion is really the main driver for me. I hope the "intelligence" is just something that makes the emotion real, instead of trite.

You Don't Know
what jack said is SO correct - you write very intelligent music. These little things you mentioned, like the clipping - no big deal - the overall FEEL of this song is very good. Your lyrics are terrific, and well delivered! great to hear from you

Glad to hear from you
also. Yes I hope the feel is preserved, despite the techno-murk of my incapable hands. Always working for better, within the confines of my limitations. I'm banging against the walls of those limitations, trying to make the room bigger! Thanks very much for the incredible compliments. I shall strive for more improvement!

Arrow
I am glad to see you here. I knew the clipping would catch you, I basically just messed up and didn't have the time to go try again. I don't like that any more than anyone else would, but I try to leave the past in the past, at least for now. NEXT TIME I'll do better, that's what I say. And I do everything in my power to make that happen!!! Baby steps man! I do like to hear my mistakes in that way, so I can watch out for them in the future. Talk to you soon.

nice
laid back vocals and composition. loved the bass. and yeah, the harmonies are great. heard the clipping but it really was a minor thing. the song is great - intelligent for sure. great restraint but still so much emotion. great work chrono.

sorry
guess I'm sorry about that! But at this point I hope it's a positive thing. I often claim reference to "the blues" in my writing... besides kind of being a pentatonic-based (I call it that because I actually generally use the entire 7 notes but more dorian or phrygian in nature... the pentatonic is thus "decorated" in that way I guess you might say) flair, it's the CATHARTIC nature of the blues that truly lives on in my music, or so I believe. In that way, I hope it was good for you!
