Description
Let me tell you a little about my process for this one, since it was a little more involved than usual for me...

I sat down at the piano with the goal and challenge of improvising something using chords and progressions that I don't normally use. Another experiment in moving a little outside my comfort zone. After an hour or so, I had recorded a multitude of different progressions and ideas.

I took these snippets of ideas and sat down with pencil and manuscript paper and spent a couple of days drawing and charting things out. My musical brain works much better if I can SEE the chords and progressions drawn out on paper. I finally came up with a few passages of chords that I really liked.

Now I needed to start building the song. But first, I needed a melody. I sat down at the piano with what I had decided would be my opening chord progression, and I started working out a melody. I wanted something very simple, very accessible, and able to fit with a variety of chords and harmonies. The piano is the first instrument to introduce you to this main theme, and then it is played by a clarinet, later back to piano, and finally by the flute. This theme is played a total of 4 times throughout the song, and every single time it is supported by a different chord progression. I wanted to use this as a tool to keep the song moving forward and constantly growing/evolving while still keeping an element of familiarity and comfort.

Once I had this melody written, the rest of the song just fell into place. This piece uses a full orchestra, with a slightly larger than usual string section and a pretty non-existent percussion section. I used pizzicato strings and compositional changes to give the song movement, and really felt like it didn't need any percussion. Let me know if you disagree! And as always, feedback and constructive criticism is very much appreciated.

Like many of you who have shared with us here at MacJams, I have been struggling with depression. I feel like I have finally begun to find a combination of medication + meditation + therapy + lifestyle that works for me. This is my "light at the end of the tunnel" song. My deepest thanks to each of you who have been a light in my life.

You continue to amaze me...
This is beautifully done, Shay. I love the fact that you are committed to giving yourself challenges and then overcoming them. Doing so expands your idea of yourself as a composer, which is huge, and it gives you more tools to pull out of the box when appropriate.

Wonderful orchestration, great flow, successful concept, more movement forward for you... I'm very proud, as always.

I am especially pleased to hear you are doing well on a personal level, too, my dear Shay. Keep going...

Shay, although I`ve never really listened to a song of yours your name "kassia" seemed familiar to me. it`s because other people are talking about you and your compositions and -of course- your personality. it`s a very nice tune, a bit sad but warm and clear.
I know what it feels like to struggle with depression and I want to let you know that your music sounds as if the future will be a good and light place to be.
all the best :)

Great piece of music
and I found your description of the writing process fascinating. It really adds something to the listening experience when I can connect with the compositional process. I, too, like to have stuff spread out on paper where I can SEE what's happening. You are writing in 3/4 time (or possibly 6/8), which is a gentle and comfort-giving meter. The entrance of the french horn is a really nice touch, providing strength, before moving pack to the more thoughtful and reflective piano melody. The pizz strings at the end add a touch of playfulness. Many sweet moments in this!

Thank you for this wonderfully detailed listen. I did work this in 3/4 - a first for me and I really enjoyed the feel of the song, although I must admit to taking some time to adjust my thinking from my usual 4/4. I really love pizzicato strings and have to be very careful not to overuse them. They add such a wonderful, subtle sense of movement, I think - and yes, a littel playfulness. I really appreciate you coming by for a listen and sharing your thoughts. Thank you!

Well composed here. I think that the song represents a journey in itself. It begins and builds itself unitl making it to an end. It is a peaceful walk down a path before sunrise only to find that the light has come about before you know it. Your eyes adjust to the light without you having to think throug it. Next thing you know it is morning.

What a great, lush palette you're working with here. The chord variation strategy works really well. Pulled me in and kept me to the last note. Many splendid ideas unfolding here.

As someone who can't read a note, I'm envious of your ability to see it all in manuscript form. There's a real sensetivity and intelligence behind this music.

Hi Shay........
Once you know that you're in the tunnel know theres only one way to go and eventually you will reach the end.

This is a beautiful cathartic piece, and I mean that in the best possible way. You have put so much of yourself into the music and arrangement and have then recorded everything extremely well.

I know I'll be listening to it many times, from now.

Take care.

Lovely piece Shay
I can never get my head around this sort of composition - I've tried writing pieces of this nature but they always sound contrived and amateur. This is truly humbling! I read your description and wonder how you can work that way - it sounds so complex - but enjoy the music all the more for the outline.

This is very beautiful.

Maybe we could start a "depression club" at MJ - hang in there, all will be well.

Very elegant
This is quite a strong, upbeat, dazzling piece. I like the underlying structure of the piece that cradles the melody through its journey. The Pizz. strings are very effective, love the dynamics you put on different beats to give a very realistic feel and also emphasize the rhythm, excellent. Of course, if it were me, I would have added a little double-bass or low trombones near the very end to add even more warm strength to the conclusion, but this is quite delightful as it stands, and it stands proudly, with a big smile. Brava! And thank you for the detailed description of your process of writing this, which I find just as valuable and interesting as the music itself.

Shay - no doubt about it - this is the best work I have heard from you yet. The amazing thing about music is that it is at its best when it comes straight from the heart, and what is more heartfelt than sorrow and pain (well there is is love, which is of course is the inspiration behind an whole lot of great music), especially when it resolves to hope. You have captured the essence of that sorrow with the firm resolve to see it through to the end, and beyond. Your playing and orchestration is beautiful. You do a great job of keeping the composition moving, and, your use of dynamics is excellent. A nice slow build up to about 2 minutes when the first hint of that non-existent percussion comes in along with the french horn (yes?). Then again at 3:15...Love the pizzicato strings at the end too...out of your comfort zone, eh? I think not!

I wish you the very best in dealing with the challenges in your life now. You are a special person and (clearly) you have many friends here at MJ. Personally, I feel privileged that you consider me one as well - hats off to you amigo!

i really appreciate your careful listen and detailed comments. dynamics are always an extremely important part of each composition for me - I seriously can get quite obsessive about making them right - so it's very pleasing to hear that they worked for you. and yes, those are french horns (good ear!).

How generous of you to share your struggle with us
count me among the many that finds it difficult to see the light that is always around us. Yet I do believe it is there and seek with a passion that often translates to music. I hear that in this piece and think you've done a marvelous job here. I wish I had your gift for composition that would allow for thoughtful planning and exploration - it really paid off in this instance.

i only sometimes have the patience (and attention span!) to actually do any planning and give careful thought to the music. there is also something very powerful about improvisation and grasping a muse-inspired moment. no matter how it is accomplished, the emotion is communicated - and when it touches and resonates with others there is nothing sweeter.

your words here touched me deeply. they are so true. I admire your faith that the light is always around us, and your passion in searching for it. There are times when I use music as a way to communicate the darkness, and there are times when I use it as a means of reaching for the light. How incredible for us, as musicians and composers, that we have this ability and these tools to express our inner struggles and triumphs.

thank you very much for coming in for a listen and leaving your thoughts, kevin.

wow, you went to a HELLUVA lot of trouble - and it pays off in big beautiful spades. your use of strings to compliment your gorgeous piano is brilliant - you are an awesome architect of sound! you're right - no percussion needed. if i could change one thing, i'd make that end a little slower, a little longer, in keeping with its overall mood. you've made a truly stellar piece here - bravo to you!

i saw the wwaaahhhh and thought, "oh no! she hated it!" thank you for your wonderful comments. truth be told, I spend MUCH more time on constructing and perfecting the sounds than I do on the actual composition and notes. instrument choices, dynamics and accents, fades and panning. those are the things I find endlessly fascinating and it always thrills me when listeners notice. I really appreciate your thoughts about the ending - it seems you are not alone in thinking that way! I'll have to give it some careful thought and see what happens in future tweaks to the song. Thank you so much Anne!

The payoff...
for your thoughtfulness and attention when writing this is one beautifully crafted, emotional piece. The orchestration works perfectly with the progressions and simple melody to carry through the emotion and feeling behind the music. Ironic that you leave your musical comfort zone to portray your emotional comfort zone. Beautifully done, thanks for sharing this.

As ironic as it may seem, this process exemplifies my journey perfectly. In dealing with this depression, I've had to try new and sometimes scary things - and hopefully it will all be worth it in the end. This song was definitely worth the work and extra attention I gave it. I'm really pleased that you came by for a listen and left such a great comment. Thank you!

special
Kassia your music is always so special to hear, to hear what you have accomplished and what you're trying. You've accomplished a lot and it's just great to hear that from you. I haven't been able to take time to listen through Macjams postings like I should but I had to make a special effort to find a minute for this. As always, you did not disappoint. The ending did kind of sneak up on me. I was surprised. If there is ANYTHING this song could want it might be that, just a little more gentle ending. But as you know I'm not the best judge of these things. I'll be re-listening (dl) to this probably for years actually. Keep up the good work, musically and personally. It really "sounds" like you're getting somewhere, your confidence is growing and there is no reason why it shouldn't, you're so talented. Let it shine! Thanks for sharing. :)

You've really touched me with your comments here. I'm more than honored that you made time to come here for a listen and leave such great thoughts. And that you downloaded! These little experiments and challenges I set for myself are always lots of fun and I learn a million new things with each song that I do. My year here at MacJams and using garageband has been incredible and I can't wait to see what the future brings me next. I truly appreciate your thoughts about the ending - and seeing as how you're not the only one thinking that way, I'll have to give that a careful listen and consideration. Thanks so much chrono.

The peacefulness...
...that pervades this song is palpable, Shay. The careful working out of the form and the orchestration is evident as the piece builds beautifully. I wonder at the conclusion, though: so abrupt. Since you've built up to that point, might you consider going the other direction -- a long, slow fade to twilight...or to the full dawn... I'd also encourage you to bring up the woodwinds in volume. They are a little "back" in the mix... This is such a gorgeous piece and I will enjoy listening to it many times.
Peace.

Despite all my notes up there about the process of this piece, it really ended up writing itself. Once I got those chord progressions figured out the rest just fell into place. I added some extra reverb to the woodwinds to make them a little less harsh-midi sounding and that might have put them too far back in the mix. I'll have to give them another careful listen and see if I can bump them up a bit. And I'll take your thoughts about the ending into consideration as well! Thank you so much for coming by for a listen and sharing your thoughts with me.

This is really nice. The production and overall sound is a perfect balance of power, emotive energy, delicate melody and theme. I would be lost at how to make all the sounds and parts come together, especially when the the song requires a very realistic mix with the orchestration. I do agree with some comments in that the end seemed a bit abrupt, but that is a minor point. Thanks for posting this.

maybe I need to start a poll about the ending! lol...thanks for coming by and listening. I really appreciate hearing your thoughts on this. While I was mixing this piece, I experimented with some different panning techniques but in the end decided to go with a standard orchestra seating for the placement of sounds. I'm glad you liked it - thanks again for coming by.

This is an amazing composition, sounds very clean, mixed very well, and is very powerful...This is the type of music that takes you on an imaginative journey, or help to tell a story through some sort of cinematic sequence...I hear an emotional but uplifting struggle...very involving, I actually wish it ran longer than 4 min!

I was going to extend the song but as I worked with the structure this just seemed to be the right length. But I can understand wanting a song to last longer. I'm really glad to hear that you thought this sounded clean and mixed well. I struggle sometimes with compression and EQ, trying to get the orchestral sounds to all balance correctly. Thanks for coming by Jay.

Wow and Wow again!
I really want to thank you for sharing your composition methodology as it stimulates ideas that others can learn from. The results are just wonderful. I honestly never thought of charting the music out like that. I think this will be most useful as I always wrote pop or rock tunes and so everything had a turn around or was ABABCAB or some such. But you are sharing a great way to use imagination, creativity and discipline to get results in a genre where something extra is required. Thank you for sharing a wonderful piece and the creative process behind it.

What wonderful comments! I'm thrilled that my notes and crazy little process has stimulated some new creativity. I try to come up with little challenges for myself in my compositions - mostly just so I can learn and try new things with the software I'm using. But I always learn a bunch about myself and my musical brain as well. Everyone has their own style, but there are tricks and tools that we all can use. And this is one of the reasons MacJams is such a very wonderful place - we can all come together and share. Thank you so much for coming by for a listen and sharing your thoughts.

Love the piano
esp when its played in such a gentle way. The rest of the music is so well composed, its is very cinematic. This reminds me of Vangelis, the 1492 Christopher Columbus sound track. Well done, very good.

I was very touched by your comments. It's so wonderful when the music we create touches others. There is both an incredible vulnerability and strength in sharing so much of ourselves in our music. and they all say the things that I would have, were I first: this is a truly marvellous, heartbreakingly gorgeous, awesome piece of music. melancholy beautiful
very melancholy, beautiful and optimistic sounding changes. i started your song playing and went to another page to do something. and i was stuck with the thought, "wow! this is exactly how i feel!" if i could write something this complex - it would definitely be along these lines. love the heart-wrenching progressions! and great melody/theme.

then i read your back story. i'm glad you are pushing the envelope and getting outside your "comfort zone" as you put it. i am truly envious of your ability to visually map out your music! i know there are patterns, etc, to music, but my theoretical training is very, very lacking.

once again, beautiful piece. in it, i can hear (well, i guess, see) the light at the end of the tunnel.

my favorite thing about art -from the artist's point of view- is how it so often is NOT a reflection of what we think we think..... (say that three times fast!). This is sweet, smart and fine, and unfolds with supremely confident pacing. I am more sympathetic to your struggle than I can say, but would not in a million years have associated it with this music. Stellar stuff!

And....uh....your tweaking is better than mine!

Beautiful...
Really enjoyed this. The effort you put into really shows, as it's beautifully crafted. Speaking of which, it was very interesting to read about your process for this song. I'll definitely learn something from it :)

I read some of the comments, and this piece almost didn't have piano?! The piano is perfect. The alternate universe in which it is missing, frightens me.

The pizzicato was perfect as well; I particularly enjoyed the parts with it. And I didn't even realize it was missing percussion, until I read it was. So it is certainly not lacking anything. I'm so glad I stopped by to listen!

Yes, I can hear the 'Cinematic' aspect of this track. I could envision a travelogue of Western scenes, set to your beautiful track. Love the crescendos, especially when the cymbal roll helps it along. Well done.

I can add little to the outstanding comments you've so deservedly received. The production of this piece--from authentic sounding instrumentation to the final mix-is superb! I was especially touched during the french horns--not sure what it was, but I really "felt" this piece. The pizzicato strings added a wonderfully subtle percussive effect and the melody ends on a note of optimism and hope. I really need to check out more of your work! Beautiful!!
