Description
Something new for me again. Instead of just sitting on a song for months, umming and ahhing over every little aspect, I decided to whack this one out as quickly as possible.
Lyric-wise this is new ground too: While I'm no authority on politics, I am disgusted by the standard of political dialogue in the American media, particularly Fox News.
I can't help but think these talking heads and the pundits they call in are pushing their agendas so vehemently that it's become dangerous and irresponsible, leaving ordinary people anti-informed and angry.
Even after the election these right-wing nutters won't let go of the William Ayer's thing or Obama's link to Reverend Wright.
I just wish that folks would vote with their remotes and get this insanity off the air.

Lyrics
Somehow I thought when the race was all over,
that these rabid dogs would be made to rollover,
that these goddam hawks and their self-delusions.
would be without their jobs with nothing to say.

but they've still got people tuning in,
and they've still got so much shit to sling.

Whip 'em up!
There's ratings in them there idiots,
There's ratings in hate.

and meanwhile....

these gun nuts are gonna kill another president,
somewhere some stupid gun nut wants to kill a black president,
don't let your local gun nut go and kill himself a president.

What would you say, Bill, if they gave you the interview?
If they asked for you?
What would you say, Ann, if they quoted you?
Would you complain, Sean, if we ever heard a word from these guests you always shout down?

Dan
I've missed your earlier posts I think. Great opening! This sounds well produced - like the kick/bass syncopation in the little break. You have a good spread across the sound stage in my phones, i fact it sounds a lot like how I do the same thing - might be an Aussie thing ;) Nice, tight finish.

My only suggestion here would be to give your vocal a little more volume to lift it just above the bed of guitars (love the Tele sound btw). I like the way you use the drums. There sounds to be a few places where the bass line doesn't quite work ("but they've still got people tuning in, and they've still got so much shit to sling") - the bass seems the weak link in this.

Really like the lyrics and sentiments.

Cheers,
Neil

thanks muchly
I appreciate the feedback, I'll be looking at the bass line in that section again. You know how it is, you start playing a part or repeating a take and it just loses its context.
the bass syncopation came after listening to the Eagles' Life in the Fast Line. What a brilliant song, and a great lesson on the virtues of simplification.

hey dan.
your song-description is very helpful to understand the content, especially for me... with a german view.

but what i have to say is:::: your song is JUST beautiful!!!! i.m.o.:: complete in every respect..
i like the easiness of your playing, of your singing.
you have a beautiful voice and the melody is very catchy!!

and one question, if its not a profound secret: how do you recorded the lead-guitar in the beginning?? it sounds very authentic.

thumbs up!!!!!
best from berlin

no secrets here, I'm sort of embarrassed to say that I use a lot the of stock standard Garageband presets for my guitar tracks. I've never taken much interest in fine tuning a guitar sound and i think most of what makes a great sound comes from the playing. In this case the lead guitar uses the GB 'new nashville' preset (completely unaltered!)
the telecaster was plugged directly into the computer and played very loosely, on the bridge humbucker.
really glad you enjoyed the song.

yeah...
it was a good experience, just churning out a song in the one sitting, all parts recorded under the same conditions and mindset. glad you enjoyed it.

tell us what you really think!
c'mon don't hold back ;)
I agree and like the way that you really just said it!
Interesting the way the music sounds un-angry while the lyrics spit at us. Nice juxtaposition there.
Good stuff ... no, great stuff.

maybe...
I'm only getting a skewed view of things but watching clips online and reading the related comments really got me thinking that Bill O'Reilly and has far too loud a 'voice' and is actually evil incarnate.
I'm not that angry, just exasperated. How does this man keep his job?

its cool
what happens when you just write a song without the umming and ahhing. You usually get something a little more pure and your attempt sounds great. Cool lyrics - gun nuts :)
Nice song man.

Out Fox
Dan,
Great content. I have been on a tirade about Fox for the past week. How can this level of sedition, malice and propaganda be allowed on a major network. Great job on the lyrics, great message. Perfect. I never listened to much Todd Rundgren but that is what comes to mind. You have really lush smooth vocal delivery and a great jangly 'verb-ed out guitar going here. Great work man. D/L--P

sedition and malice...
aren't too harsh of terms, are they? it's all very ludicrous.
thanks for always giving things a listen, I'm going to go check some Todd Rundgren now...

Yeah.
I agree about idiot talking heads that believe their own hype. Who made them the experts, anyway? Most just read what some radio-faced newscaster wrote for them. Angry lyrics on top of a "beach boys' bouncy" song. Thanks.
