Description
What genre to put this song in? I always say "rock" rather than confuse myself. I could probably put this one in the rock acoustic folk metal punk category? Whatever! I think this song really explores a lot of influences.

I wrote this song as I was dating my wife, and I think there are some references to my thoughts at the time in the lyrics. But I don't think it's all about that. I don't know. I think the "Crystal Ball" reference is a tongue-in-cheek view backwards, not forwards. It's like saying "oh sure, every decision I make is made with PERFECT CONFIDENCE. I know EXACTLY WHAT TO DO -- NOT." Heavy sarcasm I guess. It's also like saying "It's ok, don't worry, let it go". That's why it's a perfect day. It's a day when you realize you can't control everything and you just have to do your thing, and hope it will come out ok. Have a confidence in the uncertainty -- enough confidence to act on your impulses and dreams. On that day your crystal ball shows you the truth: a misty set of uncertainties, but the one dramatic realization and certainty that LIFE GOES ON! TOMORROW COMES! It's going to be a great day! Another day in the life! So don't miss it. I think overall it's a totally positive song. It's a progression, like life. That much is clear as mud.

If you start listening to this and you think you know what's coming... Let me say: I doubt it. Keep listening. Then let me know what you think. I appreciate your time!

There is a small timing problem at one point, it was so frustrating after putting in so many hours I just let it go. I hope you don't notice!

Thanks!

PS: The image credit obviously goes to MC ESCHER. I will probably change it in a few days in case it bothers somebody that I included it here. It just feels like it fits so perfectly to the lyrics... staring back at yourself... could you be the liar? Interesting! Lying to yourself then. I don't know that I did or didn't mean that. Works for me. On the net this image can be found at: http//w/...

Lyrics
Like a puzzle I am fitting all the pieces of your mind
I can almost see the secrets that you hide inside
Though no one can really read you
I can see that I am close
Even closer than you know

We walk together to the edges of the oceans of truth
Holding hands together we will dive
Together to the edge of the end of the world
and together we will fly

All the world will love you
if they look deep in your eyes
But if you stare back at them
then you might expose the liars
(all the world will love you)

It must be said a million times
that heart and soul are fires
but will they consume us all
as our noble race expires?
(heart and soul are fires
Will they consume us all
as our noble race expires?)

What a perfect day to be alive
I see it all so clear inside
with my crystal ball
What a perfect day to see
the sun up in the sky
With my crystal ball

I'd like to think that maybe
I could put my faith in you
So look me in the eyes my love
and tell me what you see
(put my faith in you)

For all I've seen and all I've done
it hasn't taught me truth
But what you believe can be a truth
won't you believe in me

(life hasn't taught me truth
what you believe is truth
won't you believe in me?)

yeah...
somebody did say that... My answer to all that is, I guess I "try" in so much that I want the whole package to "mean something". Musically, poetically, philosophically... I dig music and art that speaks something. I try to put some soul into it. Explore my own learnings (or guessings, or fearings, or confoundings). Basically just trying to "make it real". I just hope in the end it speaks something worth listening to and thinking about.

gracious of you
to pop in. I've been listening to some of your latest productions. It is funny that although a lot of it is more sound effect and less music... no drums, no merciless beat... no definite melody, etc. I have found it inspirational. I haven't commented 'cause I don't have anything constructive to add at this point. But I am curious how listening to that should produce inspiration for me... with beats and melodies and basically all the stuff your composition didn't contain. Strange!? So by that measure I am assigning a depth value that is pretty high to it. It must be deep to illicit a response like that.

love the long intro
and slow build up. cool multiple vocal tracks and well placed. i love reading your song notes. you seem to always have thoroughly thought out your songs, and letting us in on that process is very cool. love the tempo shifts in this - it has a great energy. intelligent lyrics and composition, as always. great song chrono.

thought out
Well... not really. Actually I am very much a "muse" writer. I don't really know how to write, and I really can't make myself do it. I usually don't really understand what I'm saying or why. When I pen it I just feel some emotion and I'm trying to get the emotion out on paper in some satisfying way. Meaning the process is basically cathartic and if I have done it right then I know it. I guess there is another mental complexity component that probably isn't emotional, but anyway I don't really know what I'm doing. My analysis is post-mortem. You know once it's all done I can hear it and think about it and try to piece together what I was doing. I definitely have an emotional connection, which serves as a sort of Rosetta-Stone for me. So my interpretation is at least strongly guided. Though in the end I'm just trying to learn from myself! I usually don't modify the lyrical components later on, but occasionally I do, probably because I was not "satisfied" with the catharsis? Sometimes I think I was working from the wrong mind and I think the result was not via muse but is essentially junk. In those cases I do revise. But that has only happened maybe twice in 20 songs or so. Thanks for your thoughtful comments, I appreciate the time you put in and it helps me to think further about it also!

signature
Feter, I seriously think of myself more of a writer and an arranger and less of a performer. The performance part is like a sports challenge to me. It's different totally from the writing part. But I'm sure my signature has to come out in all ways. Can't help that can we? Thanks for another visit :)

Thanks for
the song comments. I personally love to hear about the successes and troubles in getting the song to the final state.

You are right this does surprise you as it goes on. The vocals are really amazing. You did so much work them with the layering. Excellent!

The guitar work is stellar through out. As far as the timing problem... I think I heard it but not sure. My timing is so terrible that trust me I probably heard one of your prefect spots and thought it was off.

When I listen to other peoples songs I try to first listen just for the pure joy of listening. The critical comments and thoughts come later. During the first listen this was simply extremely enjoyable. This is a download for sure. On the second listen I tried to hear more of the details. Still loving that acoustic sound!

The work you put into this really shows!!! Excellent!

On the image
I often use images I find on the net unless they have a copyright or usage notice on them. I figure that if the are up on the net without a notice then they are up for a reason. If my song containing an image ever starts to be considered for something I'll get paid for, I'll gladly pay the artist or change images. I have no problem and think the image you selected is gorgeous for this piece!

Mark--
I have noticed a few of your comments, and speaking of work, you are really putting the time in at MacJams. I really appreciate that you are giving other jammers critical listening time and attention. I know not everybody may appreciate this, hell some people may even be offended, it's a crazy world. But for my part I wanted to say thank you for putting your heart into the process. It totally shows and is totally appreciated.

On the vocals, I've been experimenting with the layering for a few years. I think I mentioned elsewhere that I decided at some point there's some animal instinct going on in music. In thing subtly humans have a strong communal instinct, and we are driven by the presence of many voices. Now, humans are very complex, in the right setting I think we also connect with a solitary sound. But for the "anthem" type song I like to layer vocals to increase the "group presence".

There is some bad timing mostly with the drums. For one, during the "break down" sequence I was attempting a rhythm I'm not really that good at. A real drummer would have the snare timing perfectly with the kick. I am a little bit off almost the whole time, and I think it's the snare that is off. I'm a little slow off the high-hat. There is also a wander in there, but I'm not sure if the percussion wanders. I think it's the other instruments. As I layer the tracks I'm doing everything live all the time. Whatever is wrong with the timing went wrong during one of the later sessions. Early on when I was just working with drums and bass I could not hear it. Maybe it was there just not noticeable. Anyway, so many hours later when the guitars and vocals were put down I did hear it but I didn't have the heart to start over. Maybe next album I'll up the ante. One day I will produce a perfect album (or I'll die first). You watch! :)

Another very
impressive piece of song writing - interesting lyrics and great performance (especially vocally). I didn't notice any timing issues. Enjoyed.

Very deep.
Dramatic, profound. It has a bit of an ethnic, world music sound to it. A lot of energy. You are so invested. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Some fast singing with a bit of punk keeps one on their toes. You are good. Thanks.
