Description
This one has been in the works quite a while. As far as I can remember, I started it last summer when we had the MJ Live Aid Challenge. Another couple of tunes pushed it out of the way and I basically forgot about it until a couple of months ago when I was going though my unfinished projects bin.

Since then I've been tinkering with it, expanding it, working on lyrics and just generally fussing over it until I hit on something I liked. I don't know if this is the tune I've worked on the most since I started doing music again, but it comes pretty damn close.

It's pretty much in the 80s pop genre, surprise, surprise. As I said, I've added to it quite a bit. I consider this the "album cut." It's long. Almost seven minutes. I make no apologies for that. It's as long as it needs to be. At least in my opinion.

Sit down, turn up the speakers and give it a listen!

Lyrics
Take This World Away
©2009Joseph Gurner

I feel her eyes when I walk in through the door
They burn right though my mind
I know in an instant I’d sell my soul
to feel her breath on my skin

Slowly walks across the room
and the world shrinks to nothing
she whispers in my ear
such dark and wonderful things

Take this world away

Take this world away

Take this world away

Take this world away

Hands on her body, sweat on my face
moving together at such a frantic pace
Soaking up passion, we feel so alive
We rip through the darkness in our souls

The world spins around
as her body moves with mine
I lose myself
as she takes me down again

Take this world away

cool one Joseph
touches on a few 80's influences. a cool mix of some U2 & Police.

nicely structured and played. the bass and drums really drive it. the chorused guitar and vocals shine

Always the 80s
This one was built around the bass and drums. I was aiming for loud, driving, pounding bass and rhythm. The rest is just the window dressing.

Thanks for taking the time to listen and comment!

WELLLLL.... Mr Jg!
Started listening and the chills just went racing over and beyond my spine! This is definitely one of your tighter mixes! Oh yeah..., it be tight! Beautiful vocals on this, as well. As tight as this is, it's also paying tribute to, "what is expansive"... Perfect match for the particular state I'm in. And now I get to say it again..., this is definitely the all time fav tune of mine from you! Totally feeling you on this one. Eh eh... I'm so stupid... I'm realizing one of the things that's baptizing my soul on this is the freaken perc and/or drum work! Eggzalent fit for this. Really, everything is well done and the whole of it all cleansed me well this evening!

A true thanks! I really needed to hear something as good at this particular moment, Jg! I'm one for one and almost thinking to call it quits for the evening...

You know, Sir, I really shouldn't exit without mentioning the g'tar too! Beautiful! K, now I'm done! --- But wait... the bass! It's tight, too!... Well... it's all good my friend : )

Awwww...
You're just making me blush.

I can think of no higher praise coming from the King of Rhythm and Percussion than you digging the drums. That means a bunch!

Thanks tons, Dion. Glad you liked it. This one's almost like a baby, it took so long to gestate before it emerged. I'm pretty proud of it and it gives me a good feeling that someone who I have so much respect for enjoyed it.

Glad I took
your advice and turned it up. Great track - enjoyed all the seven minutes of it. Especially liked the drums, sounded like two kits.
Cheers

Turn it up to 11!
In the final mix, I actually took the drum tracks down a notch. I'd had them way, way up from day one, to keep that driving feel. We're not talking a mere two kits. We're talking eight tracks of percussion woven together by the end. I forget how many total tracks there were, but it was a bunch. Around 30.

Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for stopping by!

Rumbling
I like when the rumbling drums come in. The driving bass really holds it together. I like howthe lyrics gives me a vision of a man getting lost in his lovers love and forgeting all the worlds crap for the moment! The drum layering around 5:25 really brings it up. Of course the intensity in the guitars right before the end drives it home. A really great song!

Take This World Away
First off I realy like the lyrics, very intense. Has kind of a U2 sound but we won't go there. the drive of the drums throught keeps this moving right along. Strong vox and well recorded. great track guy, I realy enjoyed the listen. Thanks!

Wow! This is great! : )
Love the music and your vocals. The Lyrics: Hope you got her phone # , she might be a keeper instead of just a one night stand. Ahhh, the 80's.... "I could have danced all night," - and often did. : )

Hey Joe
You have a way with this genre - especially noticeable in the opening section - getting a lush, stringy sound with rhythm. I like what you've done here - glimpses of The Shangri-las; cool guitar sounds; some nice variations melodically; nice drive.

Your songs don't come around that often Joe, but are definitely worth waiting for.

Cheers from Oz,
Neil

Taking the world away
The things we'll do to sell our soul : )

I like the way the introduction segues into the drumbeat ... and then that beat forcefully takes over the song and drives it forward. It's like the drums hijack the song and, in the process, underscore the main theme by literally taking the world away.

Seven minutes? It doesn't seem too long or overstated to me. In fact, it feels self-contained as an emotional statement expressing the power of "dark and wonderful things." Neither too short or too long - it's simply as long as it needs to be, which shows a composer comfortable with his artist expression.

Okay - maybe "comfortable" is the wrong word, because by admission you worked on this piece over a considerable amount of time. That must mean there was plenty of frustration during the process. Songs can be like that. Some flow out in a satisfying burst of creative activity; others build like a never-ending construction project. One learns that patience is not the necessary virtue - it's persistence.

In this case, persistence has paid off. We can enter the musical realm you have created and get whisked away - have our world taken away - for seven solid minutes.
