Description
This Blaine's tune, posted here: http://www.macjams.com/song/48988, over which I added fretless bass. I bought a fretless this month for $150! It is a fender copy and I like how it sounds. I had to try it out on something and Blaine's tune fit like a glove.

The song reminds me of a how a melancholy mood feels emotionally, not big enough to be suicidal, but big enough to make you want to feel better. I think this song is more about getting to the feeling better side of things. Thanks for listening.

Here is Blaine's description: Brought the 'ol 12 string out of seclusion. A couple of new strings, and a quick tuning resulted in the 1st track, recorded into my H2 while sitting on the couch. I then went in and added the additional trakcs using the H2 in passthrough mode directly into Garage Band. No loops, just 3 continuous live tracks. 1 on the 12 string, and 2 on my '74 Garcia classical. Admittedly, it's a bit long...but that's what happens with improv. It is what it is.

Tx very much for the nice comments. It is a really groovey sounding series of big chord changes. It really hits home with the sound of the fretless.

Hey, my only quibble...
...is not a quibble at all, which is simply that this doesn't feel melancholy at all... The guitars sound really clear, crisp and bright, and the blend among them is perfect... The bass then adds another level of musical glue, and takes it to another place...I love it... and find it uplifting...

Great sound out of that $150 bass....

quibble
Tx Ed! I agree there is a sound in there that is uplifting and big, and then to my ears I hear a melancholy emotive sense in the chord changes. For some reason, it gives me this bit of sadness in the sound, but it is like a warm sense at the same time. Very cool. Yeah man, $150--its a keeper.

Fretless magic
Drew, thanks for picking this piece to tryout that fretless wonder. This is really a nice layer to this, the bass picking up and building on the melody. Sweet dude! Sorry I missed you when you were out in Napa.

fretless magic
Blaine, thanks for letting me play along. The fretless sounds so right for the chord changes and blends wonderfully with that 12 string. It is very sweet! And, I apologize for not getting in touch with you when I visited my folks. You know, you get up on the mountain, start drinking wine, then the day is just gone! I wasn't there very long this time. I'll be back soon enough though and will definitely give you a call. Tx again for this collab. Great stuff.

$150?
it sounds like a custom Alembic it must be in the fingers :-) Very contemplative and mellow. I definitely think its this side of feeling hopeful. I kept expecting to hear Roger Waters voice break in any moment!
Nice one Drew

custom alembic
I know man, can you believe it? I'm actually happy with the sound of the bass, and it takes so much for me to even begin to say that about a bass. There is hope in this song...its like the fight against the melancholy where there is light at the end of the tunnel, and you can feel it. I hear the music express that sensation in the way the chords resolve into that big G chord. The melancholy is the interplay between the E and A chords. It indeed is similar to a Roger Waters construction. Good stuff.

Richness
This is the word that comes to mind as I listen through headphones. I adore hearing a 12 string...:-) As one who also likes to enhance other people's songs, I can imagine the fun you had doing this, especially with a new bass. This improv sounds great. :-)

Giant thanks
These are some really nice comments folks, and Drew, thanks for fielding them, you're responses are spot on and I'm happy that you know far more about what I was doing than I did. The beauty and the curse of improv, you just do it, thank god someone else can figure it out. Love the bass dude, love the bass. Just listening to this again this morning. Unless we can get Roger to lay down some vox, I think this piece is done.

Wait, didn't I hear Jon Anderson was on MJ? hmm...that that would be a nice twist. Thanks again Drew, can't wait to have you back playing again.
