We Grew Up Together
Music and Poem by Bob Prince
©2009

You found your own exit
the night you checked out
Eyes shining
slow drift
off the edge

Now I wait for you
here
in the fields where we played
when we grew up
together
my friend

sweet sadness...

through your fine playing. It's as if your guitar speaks the poem. Reflections of your friend. Real good one Bob.

One of the best
This is the first I've heard of this side of you, I think. You command the venue with this natural beauty. You're one of the best. Best of what? Let me just say: All hail the mighty MJ fretward triumvirate: Bill the Tiler, Johannes the chef Ciro Ander and Bob da Guitapicka!

In your hands,
Bob, this lyric comes to life without even having to be spoken. Just such beautiful playing--full of rubato at just the right spots...and at others--pathos. Such a sad little piece that is also full of longing. It is so nice to hear an acoustic guitar miced so well with such a rich, full sound. Beautiful.
Peace (more so than usual),
Paul

...I'm into your sounds, too, Scott...

This salesguy at Sam Ash turned me on to the RODE series. They really are exceptional. I like the NT3 because of it's versatility. Easy to transport/set up for gigs and sounds great. Would like that bass roll-off switch...but I can compensate for that with the eq settings.

guitapick said 3088 days ago (June 11th, 2009)
Hmmm...
...the piece calls for a more relaxed attack...but I also changed to a different set/type of strings.

My standby has been Savarez with a wound G...but I tried another set of theirs (Corum Alliance) with the standard G string and it's a shade more relaxed in sound. Nothing earthshattering. But I notice it.

That's cool that you caught that. What do you think? They sound great with the faster tunes, too. I'm considering staying with the change.

That was beautiful!
Only minor comment I have is the occasional string noise. I read where Tiler keeps a bowl of warm water near his left hand to soften the tips and thereby minimize the noise. I personally find polished strings, although about 3x the cost, help too. Please don't let this diminish my appreciation, for you are 100x better than I, and it was a most enjoyable listen. Thanks for sharing.

guitapick said 3088 days ago (June 11th, 2009)
Well...
...I'll be checking it out when I get a moment, later...but if you're playing that Polonaise (I'm familiar with it); then somehow I have a feeling that I'm not quite 100x better than you...LOL...

The "string thing" is an interesting one. I've actually grown to like the sound. I spent hours upon hours, while studying classical guitar, developing a technique which minimized the squeaks. They just don't seem to bother me, anymore. In fact; I've kind of grown fond of them.

Not putting down your slant (which is shared by many, I'm sure you know). One of the things I like about this site is sharing ideas just like this.

Funny you should mention...
...the pauses.

I think I had a Beethoven moment, listening to this piece just after it was finished. He was booed off the stage, once, for an orchestral pause in one of his symphonies (don't remember which one). A full 4 beats. OUTRAGEOUS!!!

But I was thinking: "Am I using these pauses too much...?"

Then I said:...well...you know what I said.

Thanks, man.

Moving, longing and heartfelt. Truly a gift to be able to express life's joys and pangs through a few strings on a piece of wood, inspiring hope in sadness and instilling beauty in life's frowning face. Music like this can't be studied or learned - I can only imagine it coming from a deeper place. At least this is where it transported me listening to it. Thank you.
