Let It Go

Description
I came up with the music to this one evening, about a week and a half ago. And I thought well it sounds sorta like__________.
The next evening I ran through it around ten times to get it down so by the next day I could rip right through it. It's a little loose in the acoustic dept. but I was able to get all the music tracks down in an hour.
I added the vocals a week latter.

I usually through my kinda retro stuff under indie. It's not quite acoustic rock or just rock. It probably doesn't matter in the long run anyway.

Lyrics
Let It Go

you need to let it go
you need to take it slow

so the day didn't go quite right
and you're feeling a little uptight
tossing and turning every night
there is to much on your mind
occupies to much of your time
tied up in knots inside

you need to let it go
you need to take it slow
you need to let it go

fight and fight every night
try and try to prove who is right
when you tumble for a fall
there's no answers after all
keep the piece and piece of mind
just ignore the daily grind

you need to let it go
you need to take it slow
you need to let it go

it's not the end of the world
no matter what they say
like footprints on the beach
it all fades away
there's a day when you say
i can see clearly now

let it go and let it ride
don't bottle it up inside
take a breathe and you will find
it's easier when you let it slide
life shouldn't be so difficult
or built on false guilt

you need to let it go
you need to take it slow
you need to let it go
you need to let it go

Cool tune. Reminding me of the Birds. Everything sounds nice and crisp. Well done.

thanks. I went for a sixties thing on this one on purpose. a bit of contrast to my latter tunes.

thanks for the listen!

Just so much....

respect for the spirit of your lyrics and music. You have a well-spring of empathy and heart in your songs... so many of them. And this one is no exception. And by incorporating the "spirit" of the sixties music (Beatles, Byrds, etc...) you deliver a package really worth listening to. Nothing but admiration and enjoyment from the Dadai corner.

cheers.
Dadai.2 said 3016 days ago (July 15th, 2009)
btw....

we need a new category or genre for your uploads... the "Sixties-Retro-Beatles-Byrds-That-Moment-in-Pop-Music-Thing-You-Know;-If-You-Weren't-There-Too-Bad-For-You" Genre!
Vic Holman said 3016 days ago (July 15th, 2009)
that's what I was thinking.
Thanks Jack.
After I slapped a new set of strings on the acoustic and double slapped on a capo. this tune came together fast. It was obvious which direction it was going. plus, it demanded a cowbell for the bridge.

excellent
such a racket, sounds amazing. love that pounding rhythm. and that lead melody that sounds like a 12 string; cool. what's really cool about that part is the odd timing at the end of the line. your stuff is always like the 60's as performed by punk bands (like the damned and the lords of the new church). traditional, but with more cajones. another excellent tune.

Thanks Michael
the beginning of each line in the chorus has a 5/4 measure in it. The heavy beat was to make sure I counted it off right. ha.

the lead lines are harmonized to give it that 12'er sound. I also used the ADT plug in on the lead vocal this time around.

60's true. I was also thinking that they use to record the songs pretty quickly, so I went for that. I did have to redo one short vocal line. Otherwise the whole song was ripping right through.

Love your music
Hi Vic,
As so often before I love your music ..
and this time I came up with an idea .. what about if the chorus part 'you need to let it go...' had another character, like in a standard pop song ..

sunflowers for the masses
let it go, seems to become a mantra from me. some things you can't change so why worry. jseveral days ago one guy was complaining that a joke of his was edited out of a video. that video was done 4 years ago. so you know what I'm thinking.......

Buddhist, after a fashion
I dig the unusual meter feel, the Lennon/Harrison influences. Kind of an anthem of the moment. When I was listening (before reading the lyrics), I heard "You need a radical" instead of "to let it go." Thought you'd get a kick out of that. Perhaps letting go is again radical... Altho, in this time of economic turmoil, it may be an embrace of the inevitable... Very melodically balanced and catchy tune.

the chorus ended up being a measure of 5/4 followed by 2 measures of 4/4, x 3. I didn'r realize it until i was adding the drums.

"You need a radical" is pretty funny. When I was listening to the bass level during mixing, I had thought I had said "You need anotha' potato roll.

You're right.
This sounds exactly like _____... but their early stuff. I'm LOVING the chord choices on the "I can see clearly now" part. Unexpected, but really fitting and really good. Tasty little guitar solo. Short and sweet.

yes, the _____________ earlier stuff is pretty intentional here. there are 2 chords near the end of the bridge that i have no idea what they are called..... so they must be jazz chords. :-)

If I could be
so loose. I really like the tone you achieved in the vocal. Perhaps I can hear " the room" in the mix? whatever...The vocal tone sounds great and kinda beattlesque..... great tune, arraingement, guitars, I could spend a year and I couldn't sound this good.

a beer in a cool shower works
nice catch on the ambience on the vocal. The set up was the same as usual as I normally do. but it does sound like it is capturing the room. I also used a plug in to artificially double the main vocal. that's what Lennon did. so there is a bit of that.

First two lines and I was like: wow!
Great melody, great concept, great song! You floored me before, but this time I am really down on the carpet, um, sorry, the psychadelic flying carpet. Great arrangement and performance. The mix is bit too high for me, but on the other hand, this may also be exactly what you were looking for? Not to mention anyone in particular, but the influences are great, and well adapted. This is my favorite song of the month (not just on MACJAM's), perfect melody for July, cool and smart 60's type lyrics. This is a great song!!!

this was one of those songs where it was plug in and go for it. I didn't really get into fine details. It was a a definite go at the__________ type of early 60's sound. Thanks for the kind words.

Bravo!
Very retro in a classic 60's sense. Nice throughout, but I LOVE the change at "It's not the end of the world." That section and the lead solo which follows are priceless.

Lovely vocal work too, Vicar.

Can't believe I almost missed this one!

Be well brother!

Very cool twelve string sound
is that real or a simulation? I've been thinking of picking up a twelve if I ever get some money again. Very cool track Vic - love the way you turn a chorus and then take it a step further and head for the bridge. Great skill and performance here - as usual.

Hey Bud
It's not a twelve string. just 2 acoustics. I EQ'ed one a bit differently from the other. I do have a 30 year old Takamine twelve string that sound fantastic. I have it at work and keep forgetting to bring it home to record with. the lead guitar lines are played in harmony. One guitar played a third down.

SO many styles going on
Have to say this before anything - I LOVE THE GUITARS!!!! Especially at around 2:23 - reminds me for a split second of The Clash, 'Police On My Back' riff. No bad thing in my book.

Anyhoo, The Kinks meet REM and ask Vic Holman to write a mash-up that they will record. But you kept it and didn't allow them to mess with it...heeh heeeh!!

Summer sounds a-plenty, I am totally in sync with your lyrics here, great message put to a great tune. DL'd for sure!

where have I been, IM slackin. Ya know I like the looseness to this kind of stumbles and holds itself together with the thumping bass. Cool use of the cow bell! BTW I wish I could take it slow . The more I try to uncomplicate things it seem to cause more complications

I really like...
...the 12-string- riff, and I also really like the 'slow-o-ow' bits in the vocal. You're vocals are getting looser and more relaxed, I think, and in a good way. I love the lead break, very nice. Solid lyrics, too...
Vic Holman said 3009 days ago (July 22nd, 2009)

no 12 string, just 2 guitar tracks playing harmony lines. surprising how well it works though.

the lead is spin off of the riff in "and your bird can sing"

thanks again Ed

Isn't this the TRUTH!!! : )
"In a hundred years will it matter?" Of course not. Why do we take the little things so seriously and to heart? Probably to avoid doing the really big things that do matter, which take a lot of effort and integrity always in the face of adversity. : ) Very good song Vic. Thanks for reminding me to practice this more. Are you sure that among all your other talents you don't have a doctorate in LCSW? : )
