Description
this is the 5th post from my rpm challenge experience. the most powerful lesson i was able to learn from the month of february was to find the essence of a song quickly and move on. i did three versions of this song, two after the challenge was over. this is the second

Lyrics
when i was 18 i took in a runaway
she crawled into my bed on the 7th day

i played her music and i cooked her food
i did everything i thought i should
i let her sleep late and i paid her way
then her dad showed up one day

well she had grown up she had grown up fast
she could say with out crying nothing ever lasts
she seems like a dream to me
did that really happen

the stones are on the radio
down stairs to mikes i just want to go
find that water bed and sink right in
begin to begin again

for fear of choking on you
for fear of something new
but it stands me on my end
it tears me apart and pushes me away
i hope that i will bend

you know that i have been mistaken ive been down on my knees
but i never have forsaken
all that has been given to me

i heard my ex-wife talking to my neighbor
about her new boyfriend
she said she is so used to taking care of others
he is taken care of me instead
i felt a little funny
cause i knew she was talking about me
thats not the way i remember it
no i dont remember it to be that way

everybody said i should be out on my own
i cry you a river every time i sleep alone
i look at my feet in the morning
and wonder where they are bound
i should be picking flowers
i should be gaining ground

Harmonic smackdown

Oh yeah. Immediately reminiscent of Dylan's "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" with shades of Rolling Stones and The Association.

This is really good! Beautiful voice and instrumentation.

Fantastic lyrics
...don't know if they are true stories but they certainly come over as such. Great intimate phrasing. Love the Stones reference (Moonlight Mile - definitely one of my all time faves) I assume.
Saw your forum thread - I am very pleased you have returned so that I can add to my collection of your great songs. Thanks.
Cheers
Len

thanks
yes true story. here is what i say. every line i write is basicly true. i might string events and experiences together at times to get the essence of what i am feeling or experiencing. the point to this song is that back when i took that girl in i didn't really know how to take care of someone and i think over the 4 months that she stayed with me we both learned a lot about caring and sacrifice. so 30 years later when my second wife didn't realize all that i had done and sacrificed to be and stay with her , it hurt and seemed ironic in a lot of ways and maybe had me feeling a bit misunderstood. but that is life in so manny ways. no one will ever see you as you see yourself
i am so happy to be getting your incouragement again. i missed it

gaining ground
i started to write how great this is, comparing it to the stones and CSNY and all that but you know this is good beyond all that, this is an amazing tune, over the top pro in every way and beyond that just beautiful, and i'm wondering how damn good you feel to have written this...thanks for the DL dude.

From the beginning
The sombre sadness soaks this mood piece from the start.
I really love your blend of vocal harmonies, subtle guitarwork and that kettle drumming in background.
Everything blends together so, so nicely.
This one is a keeper for sure!

honest, open
and damn good. You lay in on the line in this song, brother. Almost as if you took lines from your diary and turned them in to a song. Which is what all of our favorite tunes are made of, right?

gaining ground
Sitting here listening to the lovely opening, reading the comments of everyone who has loved this tune, then those vocal harmonies on "bed" hit and my jaw dropped. I hit stop, rewind, and started all over again. this is incredible. i can't say any more than what has already been said. this is one to be proud of for sure. excellent use of percussion - minimal but very effective. just a brilliant tune.

what a great story in the lyrics.
