The Journey

Description
Hi everyone. It's been a while since I've uploaded anything, and if it's because I was busy elsewhere, it's also because the making of this piece took its own sweet time, and was quite a journey of its own - talking of which.

I feel deeply honored to have it star two friends from over at iCompositions, Paul Anderson on the soprano saxophone and Tom Devine on bass, who joined in near the end of the project on my request - after doing an outstanding job on an upcoming collaboration that also features Jay Hagen on the flugelhorn.

I've always been a big fan of the soprano sax and it's a delight to have Paul play it here with his inventive and soulful, sensitive touch. I have to thank him for joining in and adding to this piece a whole new dimension with his wonderful playing. Collaborating with him has been a true pleasure.

I have to also thank Tom for enlivening the minimalist pseudo bass track I had done initially for the main groove, with a bass line that, while keeping with the spirit of what I had found, brought it to a new level with what he added to it, with his fine tone and rhythmic sense. It's been a real pleasure too working with him.

For the record :

Paul Anderson - soprano saxophone
Tom Devine - bass
Me - electric guitar, guitar-synth, keys with String Studio and drum tweaks

And lastly, thanks to the seagulls for their sampled cries.

Enjoy.

Wonderful music with an
awesome mix of sounds.

The Sax sounds great in this, not that I'd expect anything else from Paul. Tom's bass has a lot of heart in it and your playing on the guitar is to die for.

As well as
having the feeling of vastness and airiness it also has an under water oceanic feel with the sounds of the backing instruments in the first part especially. Beautifully executed and considered in every part. The sax, the guitar, bass and all, weave a wonderful (as Feter said) 'meditative' piece. Jazz at it's best. Love it, regards M

Meditative
At first, I thought the genre (jazz) was ill-suited. Seemed more of an ambient piece, and a beautiful one at that. Then I considered some of the more atmospheric side of cats like Pat Metheny and was getting ready to change my mind.

Just then, the jazz guitar came in. And not long thereafter, the rest. Loving the mid-80s Branford Marsalis touches that Paul brings. And being a drum guy, if these are loops they have been super-well-applied ... very impressive (if a bit low and perhaps understandably so). Everybody is brought together beautifully and sits right in their own space, not a small feat considering the dynamic nature of the recordings.

This is a truly brilliant work, thank you for sharing it here. Wish I had the chops to volunteer my services for a future collab!
Boundless said 2858 days ago (July 31st, 2009)
Yes, Kev
It's a mixture of genres, somewhat. While you're right about bringing the work of Metheny, among others, who mix all sorts of spaces together.

As I wrote to Len, the drums are loops, somewhat tweaked, from EZdrummer - my all times favorite dummy drummer so far.

Well, I've spotted your chops already, and as I'm also a lover of simple songs or grooves, who knows. . .

Thanks for listening, for your appreciation

Boy-o!
That's one long languorous intro... I almost thought it wasn't there, it took such a nice long time to get into it. Reminded me of Jan Garabek when the sax came in but more mellow, maybe more like Dave Liebman, and that bass is really really cool sound. And there's some nice changes in those chords; all in all great!

I fear...
that one day, I'll hear something that will be so astounding to me and all the while, heading straight to my core, but that immediately afterwards, I'd have the opportunity to share with the artist what I felt or thought about his/her works - but the fear is in not actually being able to retrieve and align words in a way that would at best, keep me from sounding like I should maybe try familiarizing myself with my own brain, (or any brain) first. So.., I'll take some time with myself and get back to you at some later date on this... But for now, you can at least know that I am quite astounded at the idea of being able to hear something like this piece, here, at MJ?s... I don't know why this keeps happening but things are working out this way. Thanks, Benard. Dion

I don't think...
...I've ever heard an ambient meditation that was so carefully crafted. This just drew me in from nearly the first measure. It takes a lot of control to hold back the tempo so that each voice can sing its own tune. ... The upbeat jazz section took me quite by surprise, but it makes sense as you continue to wash the stage with those subtle strings. (Only a small nit: guitar solo is fantastic--and just a tad (a tad!) too loud.) This is such a beautiful and peaceful composition.
Peace.
Paul

Boundless said 2858 days ago (July 31st, 2009)
Well yes
Glad you pointed that out, Paul. It gets so tricky. . . How many times did I pulled it down - "hmmm, it's a tad too much" - then pulled it back up - "hmmm, it's a tad too low". You get at a point where you simply don't know anymore. So guess that the saying that talks of getting a fresh set of ears to do a final mix gets one more point here.

So that each voice can sing its own tune. . . Right, to me this is so essential and I did my best here in that regard and worked with the panning, for one thing, more than I ever did, which was a good lesson in that aspect.

Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for listening
and for your thoughtful comment.

Chilling music...
...as in, I'm enjoying chilling to this music. :)

Alright, I have to start commenting before the song ends. I love the beginning. You've taken me to another place! The birds.. the other instrument.. can't put my finger on it, but I just love being here. :)

Being a film person, I can't help but think that this would go well with moving pictures. It's probably the ambient sfx you have that makes me say this, but I love the way you use them.

I'm enjoying the improvisational nature of this. And the mood. Very nice! Of course the mix is excellent.

Boundless said 2858 days ago (July 31st, 2009)
Hi Mike
I've been told more than once that I'd be good at filmscoring - on the basis of my music, of course. Well, who knows. . . I'm certainly open to that happening eventually - must be real fun, and quite some work.

The other instrument - is one of the 'baroque violin' from String Studio, played on keyboard.

Of course, the mix is excellent. . . Of course !? Now, that's music to my ears as I'm still such a neophyte in the art of mixing-and-mastering. Thanks goodness it is compensated by a fair pair of ears !

Glad you liked it and thanks for sharing !

Lovely sound
Ok, this is one of the best quasi-ambient intros I've ever heard. And starting around 4:40 all you guys solos are very tasty and well played and beautiful sounding.

But can I address what's happening in between? That intro is like people talking "Let's go on a trip! Yes let's go! Oh goodie we're going on a trip!". Then the solos are like people reflecting on what happened on the trip "and when you went there, did you see the guy's face? Right, and remember when I said that?"

What's missing is the actual trip! You never tell the listener where you are. You go from intro to solos, without establishing a base over which to solo. A theme in other words. When this tune is over, what will the listener be whistling? What is "the song"? You go from anticipation to reflection without establishing a home base.

Around 4:10 are three or four notes that sound like they could be a theme, but they need more elaboration to become one.

Check out my latest song called Sunday haze
Boundless said 2856 days ago (August 1st, 2009)
Well, Victor
You're right in a real way. 'Themes' have never been my forte. Most of my music is more like an unfolding tale, or like taking a walk in an ever changing landscape. You should hear my 15 minutes long solo guitar pieces. . .

: - )

This said. . . Pass the intro, there's that ongoing repeating pattern. It's actually to establish it as a base, to use your words, that I left it go round by itself one round rather than having a solo start straight away. Looks like that's as close to a theme as this one gets. As for whistling, funny you mention this - I've found myself often whistling particularly catchy parts of the solos these days. But then, I've heard the piece so much lately, liking it so.

: - )

Glad you enjoyed anyhow

ocean pads
Those ebb/flow pads feel a lot like a gentle lapping of waves... the seagulls are appropriately subdued, this whole thing starts out so gently, and slowly fills in like the rising tide. One thing I notice is the electric guitar seems to have its high end rolled off a little, that is, it sounds slightly muffled, and might want just a touch less midrange and more treble, just a touch. Also, I would back it off just slightly, it seemed a little too prominent in headphones (which this piece deserves to be heard in.) The sax work and the bass work are also stellar here. Altogether, this music intertwines in the sunset breeze and sparkles on the reflecting waves of my mind... awesome!

My attention span is so poor, but I was able to hold on long enough for the fun to start. What fun, the riffs are familiar and solid...
Superior musicianship!

Hey Daug
Waves ? I remember the gulls yet not the waves
- the one brought to mind the other I guess.

Soprano
Yes, there is something about a soprano. so cool... so warm. The entire piece is certainly that as well as inspired. The last song of the evening for me and it welcomes a good night.

Terrific pic
to go with the ocean, sea feel tranquility and nature sounds.
It is always a soft place in my heart when I see seagulls and related sounds. Being born to this type of things being from frisco ! I can relate!

On a crystal clear day...
If I dive any deeper into this I'll get seagull poop on the visor of my cap. (Forget bats, they're the real rats with wings.)

THIS is the song for sailing on a perfect, lazy cruising day. This one's absolutely placid. The guitar speaks with crystal clarity -- you have something to say and words won't do it. (I think of Pat M.) I can't imagine a substitute for Tom's bass and Jay's real-live horns.

Hey Bob
Thanks for your kind words. Yes, Pat. Brilliant composer and player.
And clearly, Tom and Jay's contribution here
make the piece what it is.

Glad you enjoyed us !

Love this so much, Bernard!
I've already left you comments on this song at iComp but wanted to add something here, too - this is one of my favorite pieces of all time by anyone - the combination of you, Paul, and Tom is priceless. This collaboration is timeless and gorgeous.

Uneven mix yet nice playing
I dig all the playing, but the unevenness of the mix distracted me throughout. Everything is too soft relative to the guitar. The great sop sax may have too much reverb. The drumming doesn't add to the structure, which is important in a piece like this that has so little form - the bass and drums need to provide direction and structure. A very nice floating, formless feel, like a seagull in flight (nice apropos photo), but my ears wanted more structure and an even mix to truly present the fine playing in a more accessible track. Altho I like the clarity, lack of hiss and sound you get from your instruments.
