Queen Caroline's Lament (with Macferret, Komrade K, Len Gold and Stevel)

Description
It's been a longer sabbatical than I initially thought ….....

This was something I promised one of my oldest and dearest friends. I said I'd write a song for a campaign she's running to save the council estate where she lives in London from being bulldozed by the local Tory council to build luxury flats - http://handsoffqc.blogspot.com

I'd appreciate it if you'd have a look at what's being said and maybe even add a comment or two.

I wasn't getting anywhere with it and then Tim (Macferret of this parish) sent me a song that he thought we should cover and I told him I wasn't interested and had my own song to write but no lyrics. Miraculously over 2 days we wrote between us, a whole set of lyrics. Tim added some bass, some vocals and some midi strings (which I mistakenly put on the tympani track I had written and decided I'd leave ;) )

It gradually took on a life of it's own and Martyn (Komrade K) agreed to put some violin on it (and made an excellent job if I may so) and a few other MacJammers added some “authentic” folk club vocals. I also got Pete Young http://www.soundclick.com/bands/default.cfm?bandID=690748 from the Zoom Home Recording Forum to add some harmony vocals which unfortunately got lost but he's there on the chorus still.

The campaign loves the song and are thinking about doing a video using it and have asked me to go and play at their Action Day :) Some info on Queen Caroline herself which may explain one verse at least - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caroline_of_Brunswick

OK, here's the cast list

Me : Music, words, 12 string acoustic, vocals
Tim : Words, bass, backing vocals
Martyn : Violin
Pete : Backing vocals
Len Gold (+ wife) : Backing vocals
Stevel : Backing vocals

Lyrics

Oh the Tories will say, they’ll take nothing away
They won't make us homeless, but they won't let us stay
But losing our homes is a high price to pay
And they won’t come back when they’re gone.
They won’t come back when they’re gone.

And the moneymen crying, just look at the waste –
They're illiterates living on prime real estate
We’ll replace them, displace them with money and taste,
And they won’t come back when they’re gone.
They won’t come back when they’re gone.

I was feeding the swans on the Thames
The sun going down by the bridge.
And I knew this is worth more than any man’s greed
And how can they live with their conscience clear?
I felt someone standing by me
The shadows were long, but she called out my name.
A voice talking down through the years,
Saying, carry on – force them to tears...........of shame.

Queen Caroline lived through an interesting time
A rake for a husband, a king lost his mind
But it's morals not marbles the council can't find
And they won't come back when they've gone

Some say it's a right to live where we're born,
Not a privilege or something we have to pay for
Oh some of us struggle but don't call us poor
And we won't come back when we're gone.

We built up our homes and it was our intent
That we built a community, made up of friends
Now we stand to lose all for the council's own ends
And they won't come back when they've gone

And so it begins and you know what they'll do
To move out the riff-raff and bid them adieu
If they can do this to us they can do it to you
And you won't come back when you're gone

Dick - Firstly
I am so pleased to see you back here again. Thanks for asking us to contribute, we really enjoyed helping and love the song.
Great song and your musicianship and vocals are superb. Really love Martyn's violin too.
Looking forward to seeing you play this live with, hopefully some other Macjammers, and a few more beers.

Not everyone can write
a protest song that is actually enjoyable to listen to. But you guys managed! Really sweet - without loosing the angry part, I might add ;-) Yes, Martyn DID an excellent job with the violin, but other parts are excellent too, singing included. Kudos and good luck with this "operation"!

Take care.

Ok I've been
meaning to get back to this and comment on the message. I fear I don't know much of the inner working of your country but it seems to me this kind of thing happens all over the world in various countries. Perhaps we here in the USA don't have royalty in the strict sense but we sure have those that seem to think they are royalty and due to haver everything they ever desire...

Our congress seems to fit... nicely... they have their own healthcare, their own retirement system... When the chips are down would they ever raid their own to pay the poor!? Seriously I think not...

I'd sure like to run them off, shame them to tears at times... I'm not sure I'm on base with my parallel here but regardless I LOVE YOUR TUNE!!!

I meant to say in the first comment that the violin work was outstanding! So perfectly fitting for this!

A
fantastic song Dick, I really love this and it's great to hear it again with the additions of the backing vocals from Len, Tim, Pete & Steve along with Martyn's violin playing.

Just a great sound with some wonderful lyrics that you sing so well.
I love the way you sing 'I was feeding the swans on the Thames' that's a great line, combined with Martyn's violin playing this sounds superb!
Congrats to you Dick and the cast, Tim, Martyn, Pete, Len & wife and Stevel.

A really excellent song Dick and it's great to have you back here at MJ making music again!

Excellent song Dick, been listening to this now for a few days so it is firmly entrenched in my mind. A very fine piece of protest folk rock....glad I got to join in on the 'rabble' chorus. Martyn's fiddle playing is superb on this song, a wonderful addition to the atmosphere.

Ready for the stage...
Dick,
First, it's awfully wonderful to have you back with us. You were missed.
Second, this song is amazing. The lyrical topic is topical and timely. The musical content places those lyrics in a mode that I think would be perfectly suited to a stage piece on this very topic and the story that surrounds it. That's how I felt, anyway. ... The solo violin sounds real. Is it? (or Memorex??/digital)Really nice. This is a beautifully constructed and orchestrated number and your vocal is suited so well to the performance. ... So nice to have you back.
Peace.

Only been back a few days and already I'm struggling to keep up!

Thanks for the comments on the song. It was one of the more satisfying songs I've written over the past few years. First of all it was an important song for the campaign and secondly it was a true collaboration with Tim as we swapped lyrics and ideas over two days.

The violin was played by Komrade K and is indeed real!

Thanks for the welcome back!

Great all over! Great lyrics, message, performance, and mix. This is one of the best things I've heard here in my oh so 5 years. Sentimental but with hope. I wish the ending was a real ending instead of fading out, that's the only thing, and that's not much. I love you/Peace/Mikki

5 years?
That's quite a compliment and I'm very pleased to hear the comments. We worked hard on this song with lyrics being tossed backwards and forwards between me in the UK and Tim in France and I hope we managed to get the message across.

I wanted a fade out as it seemed a bit hack to finish abruptly after "when you've gone"!

What a terrific tune to come back with Dick.
A gem and a true nod to the traditions of the protest bard.
This is a keeper, and one would not be surprised if you got ring on the phone from Richard Thompson asking you permission to sing at one of his concerts.

Has this touch of Strawbs....
....The twelve string sounds really good to my ears, and I think the bass supports its trebliness really well.... You got a great sound from Martyn's fiddle.... I have a track of his that I'm working with right now, and I'd love to hear your secret to getting that fiddle sound...EQ? reverb?

Really came together into one strong song and performance....

Ed
Komrade K said 2993 days ago (August 9th, 2009)
Strawbs?
The Strawbs? Most definitely not of this parish!

As for fiddle sound - I used the electric through an effects peddle for this track and the setting I used gives a smoother sound whereas I often go for a grittier sound with the acoustic. Dick can put me right on this but it seems to me that the main twiddling of the sound came with the chorus but the rest doesn't sound a million miles from the file I sent him.

DWL said 2993 days ago (August 10th, 2009)
Thanks Ed.
The main violin sound was panned slightly to the left and I added a smidgeon of reverb.

For the quieter vioiln parts I used the "Guitar in Sp[ace" Track Reverb in Garageband and a tremolo to get a gentle panning over the quiet sections.

I didn't touch the EQ at all as Martyn's track was pretty much all there soundwise.

Thanks for the comments, much appreciated!

So many fine points in this that work to make for a memorable listen - the musicianship really reinforces the punch of its serious message.

Lovely work, and I hope this shines some light on the council's ill-considered and self serving plans.

Cheers
