The Investigation Begins (LIOLI9)

Description
Started with the loop, tried it with violins, and this is what came of it...
I was quite impressed with myself actually. :) I like how the strings, percussion, piano, and brass work together to create a certain feeling.

I've never used a loop like this in a song before, so I learned a lot from it. Inspires me to make my own loop in the future, and try to create a song of my own out of it.

One of the beauties of the LIOLI challenges
is that you lear as much about yourself, as you learn from trying to tame the loop.

You obviously learned how to tame the loop very well, this sounds wonderful.

Re: sloparts
It certainly was a cool challenge. I hope I never stop learning more about myself, when making music. That's one of the great things about music I think. ;) Thanks!

Re: Rocha Malhada
I usually just look for photos I've taken, for album pictures. This just seemed better to fit the tone of the piece somehow, though my library is a bit limited. :P Thanks!

nice
i like the way they all fit together. i actually did a round in my first mix, but backed off (it was nowhere near as good as this). very cinematic too. great job. nice melodies.

Re: michael2
My worry was that all these instruments and melodies might make this a bit too muddy. Had a terrible time mixing this. Glad it worked out though, for the most part. I'm glad you thought it all fit together. :)

I never
would have guessed this loop could morph into something like this... Simply wow!!! Nicely done.

Re: MarkHolbrook
Neither would I. Honestly, I was surprised as well. Sometimes the music just feels like it writes itself. After trying violins, I wrote the percussion, and that really created the style, and drove the rest of the piece for me. Thanks so much!

Month by month, I'm slowly gaining a better understanding of orchestration. Amazing how just continuing to make music, leads to improvements in so many areas. Thanks Feter!

Yep
It's amazing what a LOOP can do to your music making, glad to see that this was an eye-opener for you.
This sounds wonderfully, very nice work.

Re: Skean
Thanks! Going in, I was slightly skeptical about how creative I could be, using a loop. Turns out, it only increased my creativity. Loved this challenge.

Funny...
I didn't take notice of your name, but the music definitely sounded like it belonged in film or TV. You took the loop, made a great tune, and lived up to your name!

Re: DeputyDoofy
Thanks! When I brought the piano in, combined with the percussion, and low string build up, in the beginning, all I could think of was NCIS. That was the feeling I got... specifically TV oriented, with a investigative spirit. I think it needs some work, but I'm very pleased with it.

Wonderful, Wonderful!
The loop is there, but the sounds are just magnificent and so is the composition. Has the real feel of cinematic film score. You should be very proud of yourself on this one.
Bravo!

Re: sschedra
I am very proud. Maybe more happily surprised. :) The cinematic film score style was definitely a conscious goal. I'm glad to have succeeded, and that, more importantly, you enjoyed it. Thanks for listening!

Thanks so much. So happy to hear you enjoyed it. I can't wait to listen to yours and everyone else's take on this loop! So cool how completely different directions can come from one starting point. That's why I love music.

low end
like the low end cinematic feel to this... it has meaning with the changes- they go somewhere... a real beauty and dynamic!

Re: awigze
It seems that "meaning" you speak of has been missing in much of my music. I had a real sense of purpose when writing this, and it's great to hear that this showed through. Thank you!

intel
nicely crafted. the loop on the strings at that tempo sounded like someone urgently walking quickly. maybe an attache carrying vital diplomatic intel or something?

wow

I usually reply to everyone's comments on my work, but man was I surprised to see so many comments after just a day! Thanks for listening and taking the time to write your take on this. Urgency, and importance: you're absolutely right. I couldn't pinpoint it in words myself. Thanks!

Ye Gods
where did you find something this dramatic and urgent out of a dance loop? I hear the NCIS feel, but it also puts me in mind of Freedom Fighters by Two Steps From Hell (if yer not familiar, it was used in the third Star Trek trailer this summer. Breathtaking, sweeping epic sound)

Your use of the orchestra is inspired - the piano traces the dogged perseverence of the determined imvestigators while the horns and strings punch the urgency and deadlines of time running out. What a ride.

Demented genius. This place is full of them.

Of course I know Freedom Fighters! That song is the epitome of my style. :) I love it. If you're reminded of that, than I suppose that's a good thing.

Thanks so much! And you're right; I'm constantly impressed by the creativity here.

Going... up?
Excellent orchestration of the loop into a tensely wound spring, good places to modulate up to increase tension, a perfectly added coda. Definitely things for me to study and learn here!

a symphony
it creates drama in the mind. there is not much time. she is at the top, and he is at the bottom. it seems impossible to get to the top in time. he gets partway up and must switch to the stairs. then switch to a fire escape. it will be very close. oh. the music stopped. did he save her? i must watch the movie. 0x0
