Description
Late submission because you guys just really inspired me. It crashed at 11:17 and I could only really get a shadow of the trumpet solo back and the ending I had got blown so . . . This is using Ryan Gruss' live drum sessions. Thank you Ryan.

I really got bummed because I had a better version that crashed. It had a dynamite trumpet solo and the ending was really tight. In any case its got the drums and the dance floor loop at 4/4 and the rest of the instruments are 5/4. The trumpet goes wherever he wants. It was fun, but I had to get it under the wire for LIOLI9. Ryan Gruss has a web site where he distributes his recorded drum loops. He makes fresh ones every week. I used one of his jazz beats. Great guy.
Thanks as always,
Stephen

I like what you did here. The bass line sounds awesome. Really dug all the horns. Good stuff.

Yeah, I told Feter that the bass and the main horn theme was 5/4 time, its actually 6/4 over the 4/4 of the drums and the soprano saxes doing the loop. The bass line was at the heart of it after I settled on the drum beat.

I wish you could have heard the original horn solo. I really had it sounding like a real trumpet and had some authentic sounding licks. You should check our http:\\ryangruss.com for some of his free stuff. I got the Logic sessions for these drums for for from him. It turns out there is even more to the picture than it seems. He has the drums looped, so I unlooped them and when I expanded the sample window, there was more of the pattern with variations tucked away. I had originally used this "extra" stuff to construct a killer ending. But, then I crashed Logic and ran out of time. Too bad.

solid bass line
really slick, Stephen. (Where's that confounded loop"!)

sschedra said 2830 days ago (August 24th, 2009)
Harold
Has anyone seen the loop? Its the soprano sax part that comes in only twice in the piece. The bass pattern is a walking 1/4 note bass which if my fingers were in shape I could play for real, but now, well the keyboard is a lot easier to play.
Thanks for the visit,
Stephen

Me too. I would not be surprised if some jazz fan tells me that this theme is actually some jazz standard and I subconsciously plagiarized it. It was really fun until the CRASH! Then panic and a rush to redo what I lost.
Thanks again,
Stephen

Very Dizzy Gillespie.
How do you get the same midi track to do different time signatures ? ....or are you playing the instruments at 5/4 over a 4/4 track ...if so I must lie down again.......Another astonishin string to this little loops bow !
Check out my latest song called Port Arthur Blues
sschedra said 2829 days ago (August 25th, 2009)
It wasn't that hard
It was actually 6/4 over 4/4, It was a typo. I played the instrumentals for the bass, horns, alto sax and trumpet solo on the keyboard. They were at 6/4. The drums are 4/4 and so is the Dance Floor Pattern #43. They come together every 24 notes.
The Bass line is four measures of 6/4 The backing horn phrase is also four measures of 6/4. So when the loop comes in it plays for 6 measures of 4/4 (which is the same number of notes as 4 measures of 6/4) along with the bass, before the horn theme and bass line restart along with it. In order to have it make sense musically, you just need to start the horn theme at the beginning of a 4 measure drum phrase and make sure that the loop starts at the beginning of a 4 measure 6/4 phrase. Did I over explain?
Thanks for the comments and your ear,
Stephen

Splendid!
Please check the "Project File Backups" folder in your project folder: your 'better' version might just be there.....

I am so sorry to hear of your loss, but if it's any consolation: this is grand just as it is!

Yes it is there, but alas, attempts at opening it yield only an expected crash. This proves to be the case with any backup except a very early one without the trumpet solo and ending. What is even worse is that the version that I bounced for the challenge will not open either. Thank God I did not close it before I bounced it to MP3. There must be something in the IK Mutimedia Sample Tank trumpet that is causing this problem, as when I add it, the ability to restart the resultant file is lost. Thank you for your kind consolation and advice,
Stephen

classy
i'm gonna need a long time to listen to this, cuz i like to salivate over each new thing - that bass is soooooo pretty.
way to go, ryan. you kept the piece stepping lively with choice embellishments in good places. the horns are ultra classy, tho too loud in the mix for these ears - i didn't want that beautiful bass to be sacrificed. you are a musical scientist to think of blending the 2 rhythms. that was a very cool hit of sound. and thanks for the info on ryan - what a santa claus of a guy!

The crashed mix was definitely better and did have tamer horns, but alas. It turn out this mix is an orphan too. I am getting a lot of crashed Logic sessions lately. Thanks for stopping by and listening and commenting.

Awesome
Whoah! This is GREAT! I love it. I like the way you build up the opening — drums on their own, then bass is added, then horns. Vamps galore! Really fine music here. I also like the spaciousness of it all. Wold love to hear a live version of this.

What software/samples do you use? Thanks for letting us know about the Ryan Gruss' live drum sessions… I will check that out.

Only suggestion I have is that the ending sounds a little abrupt to me, and I think you could stretch it out a lot more.

The ending is unfortunate. I had a great version of this, but it crashed about 45 minutes before the challenge deadline. It was a different solo and a real ending. Even the version that I patched up and bounced here crashes now, so I would have to re-do solo and ending.
Thanks again,
Stephen

YYEEAAHH!
Those horns are on frikkin' fire! This is pure thermonuclear genius gone critical mass and beyond! On my third straight listen and am in a state of wonder at the delicious twists and exuberent surges of musical craziness. Yeah, that trumpet is straight insane. This is beyond impossible.

I am not worthy. My crickets are bowing their antennae in respect... no, wait, the little buggers are dancing. Wait, so am I.

Demented brilliance, genius!!!!!!!

You're doing a great job evoking that big band feel with synthesized instrument. Horns often sound really bad, sampled, but you're pulling it off.
