Never Say Goodbye (MJ Bond Theme Challenge) w/ Char

Description
Sorry this one came in so late, but it just couldn’t be helped. Sometimes real life doesn’t pay a lot of attention to what we plan, and circumstances kept this in the background for a little while. But here it is.

For me, the quintessential Bond theme song means a big dangerous horn section backing a hot singer painting a vivid picture of perilous love in a shadowy foreign land. There’s been some good ones that step outside that idea – including many from this Challenge - but given the chance to try my own hand at the genre.... ?

My first attempts were, to put it nicely, inadequate to the task. After a week or two, I finally went back and dug up a previous song I’d recorded years ago, stripped everything out but the organ and dropped what was left into an orchestral horn section. That’s the ‘big horns’ opening, although I tweaked it more with a lot trombones and strings to get a ‘big sound’ thing going on. The rest of the song follows with plenty of strings layered among the horns to emphasize that dangerous, sexy and yet ultimately unobtainable guy that Bond is. The lyrics were written with this in mind, although at first there were some Bond movie titles mentioned in the chorus for comic effect (“A girl’s best friend is a man with a golden gun”, ha ha ha) but they seemed at odds with the heartache hinted at in the verses. So I stayed with the yearning, romantic feel right through the song.

And speaking of lyrics.... when Char mentioned that she’d like to take a shot at a Shirley Bassey-style song for the Challenge, I knew an opportunity to give this song the passion it needed was knocking on my door - if she was interested. Would my tune be up to her standards? After some emails were traded back and forth, my tune was off to Char and the collab was underway. And wow - I thought she’d do a great job, but when I heard those vocals I nearly forgot it was my music she was singing to!

Thanks, Char, for giving this song the aching heart and the dangerous fire that marks a Bond song - it was a pleasure and an honour to collab with you on this. MGM may have had Shirley Bassey but MJ has you, and you rocked this one to the wall.

Lyrics
Never Say Goodbye

Never say goodbye
Never say goodbye
My lips will always remember your name

Never say farewell
Never say farewell
A final kiss can never cool the flame

Golden words can fool a heart
As lips can whisper lies
When all the world can offer
Is the prize
Never trust a promise
Burning diamonds always lie
And never let your kisses say goodbye
Never say goodbye

Another nice squirrel
...place is full of them lately. Glad you liked the tune, Karen - it was a lot of fun to put this together, and Char just nailed that 'Sean Connery' era sound. Thanks so much for dropping in - always a pleasure.

dangerous duo
Wow, this is great! Stunning orchestral work here, your strings and brass really stand out, great writing. The singing is superb. Char, you should be proud of this. Great mixing job too, everything is clear.

You wouldn't believe
how I screwed it up, at first. I didn't realize where I should put the words. Mr. is very patient. Yes, the music is very dynamic. He is really good at this. Thank you. :)

Where's Your Squirrel?
Sorry, I got into a rhythm there - so many squirrels around here. The orchestral sound on this was plenty of fun to play with... it's amazing having an entire orchestra sitting around in my Mac waiting for me to give them something to do. If I'd had this technology twenty years ago...... (sigh)

Always a pleasure, Sir Drakonis. Thanks for dropping in.

Indeed
After I created the art, I thought I made a pretty good Bond - if I may say so myself. As for Char... well, if it's James Bond, there's going to be a red bikini at some point. It's inevitable.
sloparts said 2972 days ago (October 24th, 2009)
Wow
Great job you two. Love the horns, gotta love them. Char's singing reminds me a little of Eartha Kitt for some reason, and that's a very good thing.

Great bit of tune-age here My Mordenus you can both be very proud of this one.

Horns Aplenty
And when it's James Bond..... crank 'em up! Char's singing was a perfect match to the 'big horn' sound I was going for here, and the whole thing came together just right.

Thanks for coming by, Ed: there's always a comfy chair for you around here.

I had a hunch
...Char would rock the vocals on this one. The funny thing was, I was thinking of asking her if she was interested - and then she mentioned in the Bond forum that she was interested in doing some Shirley Bassey-type stuff for the challenge. How's that for coincidence?

You're always welcome here, Sheila. Glad you could drop in.
MJ_Bond_Theme_Challenge said 2972 days ago (October 24th, 2009)
Definitely Worth Waiting For
...no worries about the lateness, very nice work put together here. Haunting feel to the singing that suggests a strong yet vulnerable woman knows full well the promises being whispered by the smooth secret agent are empty promises. You two cooked up a great tune!
Char said 2972 days ago (October 24th, 2009)

very cool song
great bond theme
the extreme panning that puts the vocals in each speaker is very distracting to my ears...but char did a great job in singing and your backing track is absolutely tip top

Panning
Sorry the split vocals had that effect; I tried to keep the separation of the vocal channels just under the radar. Will experiment more and listen even more - thanks for the valuable feedback. Deeply appreciated.

Thanks for checking in!

Feter!
When the Blues Master gives you the thumbs-up you know you've done a good job. I've really had a lot of fun playing with the orchestral jampack, it can do some pretty amazing things. But the star here is definitely Char - without those pipes of hers it's just a big brass band warming up.

Thanks for taking a listen, Feter - you're always welcome.

I just go nutty

Secret Agents
always have room for a little hanky panky. They're just wired that way. Danger, romance and a big gun....
tokai said 2972 days ago (October 25th, 2009)
Great stuff
Perfect Bondage track?
Yeah Char, you have made a perfect Bassey stand in. So this is where you have been?
The track with that bass line is fitting for those Bond days of yonder.
Well sung Char, i like this.

Compared to
some other stuff I have tried, this was very forgiving of my limited capabilities. It was a joy to try though I don't think I Basseyed it. Mr.Mordenus is a real generous guy. He didn't have to use his gun to convince me that it was a neat piece of music. Thanks so much. :)

Perfect... Bondage..?
That would be Emma Peel, I think. Leather catsuit, but still a spy for sure.

I was trying for a more classic Bond sound, early Connery, that era. Char's voice really carried the show, though. Glad you liked it.
Daugrin said 2972 days ago (October 25th, 2009)
Bondalicious Flavor
Who is that gal on vocals?... so dramatic, like Bond's opera chick...
Great job on this production. This moves along like the cini.
The synth work is smooth and very supportive. Well done to everyone.

Dramatic
Thanks for the thumbs up on the synth work - the Orchestral jampack is a lot of fun to experiment with when I want to pretend I have an entire orchestra up here in my model train room. Tune was a lot of fun to put together and Char knocked it out of the park.

Bond challenge
Just caught up with this one. You are right in the spirit of the genre - the big sound, and lyrics that get into the style beautifully. Of course, the expressive vocal finishes it beautifully. Impressive work!
