Description
During our meeting last summer, Neil suggested me to collaborate on a song by sharing one of his last creations "Lost In Translation", a very beautiful song which you can hear here, in the original version : http://www.macjams.com/song/56877

Exciting mix of emotion for such a present and apprehension because it's an unusual exercise for me, furthermore when hearing the original version so nice to me.

Except my voice, all the work is made by Neil : a new musical piece with a different sound, the vocal adaptation and the mix.
I have to thank him again for coming to me and letting me sing on his nice music.

I had some difficulties to adapt his own text in French and I was afraid to modify the sense, then I opted for a subject a little bit different.

The translation is near the French lyrics...

Lyrics
as a foreigner who does not find the words in its luggage
I don't understand what they say about me and I'm down and out (I stay behind)

tous ces amis que je me fais pas, mal au coeur et vague à l'âme
all these friends that I don't make, bad to my heart and vague yearnings
I don't know the words which they expect from me and I'm down and out

I want to approach to understand them better
but I speak too much low to be listened
I'm afraid and I cry because I see that they go away from me

all these doors which don't open, no key no sesame
I don't know the words to cross the step and I'm down and out

all these countries where I don't go, in prison in this cage
I look at the sea, dreaming about cruise and I'm down and out

all these languages which I don't know, stand as dams (blocking)
me I hate these borders which oblige me to keep silent and I'm down and out

et je reste sur le sable
and I'm down and out
sur le sable
down and out

je reste sur le sable
I'm down and out

one day I shall go over there, my dream comes and goes

Salut Marc - I knew this would be fantastic
when we first started looking at doing it. Your vocal gives this such a wonderful feel in the sense of my original lyrics - I love your words.
Merci for joining with me in this exercise mon ami - a bientôt.

what sadness of thought...
Gorgeous music, great guitar/bass work, great touches of drums, well written and performed... has touches of regret woven into the notes... which is picked up PERFECTLY with your lyrics, Marc. Also your singing is always deeply heart-felt and emotion-driven. And the story you weave makes my heart ache for this poor soul... really well done! And it all comes to this point, that you can get this message across beautifully in French AND English, to so many friends around the world! Well done you two!

Very nice work from you both. Lovely guitar work again (I like how it's mostly acoustic this time).

Just the fact...
...of the two of you doing this pair of versions takes the quality of the concept up a notch...

And then it works out so very nicely....

I appreciate that this is not just "new lyrics and singer over the old rhythm track", but a new version...

I like the simplified feel and the acoustic guitar playing, and Marc's singing is totally appropriate to the lyric....

The two of you have done a very neat thing here.... Not least in that you have come up with two very good versions of a good song, and without getting pretentious about it...

I think you did something really brave here, Marc, in allowing yourself to take Neil's song in a different direction, and you've pulled it off...

Very cool...

two versions
Thank you so much for this kind comment. Always a great pleasure to read you Ed.
At the beginning, I was thinking I had to sing on the same instrumental track but Neil has made a great work with these two different versions.

I see that Neil answered, to you and to Eduard, about the meaning of "sur le sable". I have to make a littlel work of translation and I come back to you to give some additional precision.

drakonis said 2901 days ago (November 13th, 2009)
Zut alors!
I noticed "Sur le Sable" in his lyrics, and saw his English translation "Down and out", so it must be a colloquialism. But of course my mind went immediately to the Kitchen-gadget store my wife loves, called "Sur le Table" and I had this multi-lingual wordplay moment, realizing that "Down on the Table" must be a French play on words on this phrase! Marc, am I close? Sorry Ed for jumping in and replying, but I always love these "aha" moments!
ttfn,
Drakonis

Je reste sur le sable
Marc and I had a discussion about the meaning of the phrase. It literally means "stay on the sand", but colloqually it means something like "I'm left out", "I'm missing out", or various nuances of that.

Originally I suggested that Marc just do a translation of my English lyrics, and then he came up with these - I was so happy that he added such a personal aspect to the song. What really makes this song for me is that Marc and I met in real life and talked about doing it and it happened - on opposite sides of the world. The fact that we got on so well together makes it all the more satisfying :)

I _feel_ what you say in your words Marc. Beautiful song. Your singing goes so perfectly well with the music. And the music, so full and spacious at the same time. A layer over layer crescendo that doesn't saturate.

And, yes, you should go over there. And don't worry about tongues. I have a Russian friend that says that a couple of vodkas help a lot in understanding people that speak a different language. First hand, it works ;-)

Sure, it's sable.
wow am i ever late to this party. anyway if everyone is already passed out they won't see me steal anything. i have no idea what you're saying because i'm ignorant but the guitar has a great 70's soft rock vibe and the vocals have that great whiskey and cigarettes sound that invites the listener up to the bar to listen to a story. really like that short strummy break in the middle with the high chords and the bubbling little jazz lead in the verse toward the end.
