Description
The third song from my "Swiss period" (previous songs are Lost In Translation with Mike Watkins (kevmikwa) and Sur le Sable (by Marc Trannoy/Neil Porter with Blaky Smith).), and continuing the ideas from "Lost In Translation" - the joys of being somewhere new and a little exotic - somewhere green (impossible green) and very different to what I'm used to. It's an emotional ("spiritual" if you like) thing, and something I get a similar buzz from as I do from music.

Musically, it's me on .....ummm, everything really. Lots of guitar tracks, bass, 3 part vocals and midi drums.

A remixed, much higher quality version of "Signs Of Life" is available for download: HERE

Lyrics
Looking For Signs Of Life
©2009 Neil Porter

There’s this place I know
They got fields of impossible green
Across the valley
The mountains touch the sky, they touch the sky
It’s more than skin and bone
That keeps you moving
Keeps you moving
Looking for signs of life

Upturn every stone
You don’t know what you might find
Round every corner
Shadows slip away, they slip away
It’s more than skin and bone
That keeps you moving
Keeps you moving
Looking for signs of life

Wrap yourself in the smiles of strangers
Lose yourself in a land of other ways
Take a chance with the stones of ages
Keep on looking, looking for signs of life

INSTRUMENTAL

Man on a mission
Become a full time seeker, a real life keeper of dreams
Chasing visions,
Chasing shades of light, shades of light
It’s more than skin and bone
That keeps you moving
Keeps you moving
Looking for signs of life

Wrap yourself in the smiles of strangers
Lose yourself in a land of other ways
Take a chance with the stones of ages
Keep on looking, looking for signs of life

I hear you saying
“You’ve got too much, too much, too much time on your hands”
Tread too softly
And time just slips away, it slips away
It’s more than skin and bone
That keeps you moving
Keeps you moving
Looking for signs of life

the searcher you are
great tune Neil. the sound is so rounded and crisp. i can always count on great playing and tunes from you.

obviously you found one heck of a sweet spot for inspiration for this song. i guess the swiss trip was the perfect motivation factor, everything gels so well here.

Thanks for listening (and firsties congratulations!). Where we were living in Switzerland was pretty special - in the French-speaking part, the less touristy part, and most significantly the less majestic part. They speak much slower French there too, so it was relatively easy to fit in to the culture and just wander the local area. Made me realise what it is about travel (the way we do it) that I enjoy so much.
Writing on an old nylon string helped by forcing me to focus on just one instrument.
Cheers from ...... where am I? .....Oz :)

Expansive sound my friend...
So simple in terms of the instrumentation... but really rich sounding. I think that acoustic and bass are driving this to that end.

Cool tune Neil. The Swiss mountains effect a creative quality it seems... more than just musically... I like the lyrical content, very thought provoking, which is never a bad thing.

A very well crafted song. Reminds me of Sting somehow. Cool picked guitars, really enjoyed the bass. Vocal harmonies sound good. Production sounds first rate.

Thanks for listening Dave
and thanks for mentioning Sting in your comment. I know he's uncool in some circles, but to me he's the consumate singing bassist (and he writes a nice tune also).
Cheers,

great delivery and balance. It's all there and your here, when does it hit the radio.

Really like the vox. Has a timeless quality to it that delivers that essential impact to the lyrics.

Timeless
is good :) As far as the radio goes, it will hit our local radio station in the next few weeks, and will last about a week on their playlist - only because I know a couple of their programmers :)
Thanks for the listen.

Enjoyed the vocals. You have a very personal tone and you know how to use it man.
Guitars are transparent, the rhythm section keeps everything moving forward, like pulling the song out.

Niiiiiiiiiiiiiice!
Three's a charm Neil. Very good stuff. Arrangement works. The gradual build-up is what I'm talking about.

Fine guitar picking floating over that phat yet smooth bass. Guitar solo grooves...VOCAL is one of your best to date.

Thanks for the ride!

Crispy acoustic playing...
...and a nice, solid, confident and upfront vocal....

Another jiguma lyric that is immersed in a place... Some of your songs function as almost a travel journal.... Here's where I went... Here's what I saw... Here's what popped into my head and heart...

Neat Telecastering in there, too....

First off the song is well written, and your arrangement is exceptional. You filled each nook and cranny with just what it needed at that spot; your vocal harmonies are well done and used tastefully, as are the guitars. And the bass sounds great - a nice full tone that I wish I could capture in midi form. Very much enjoyed this one Neil - thanks for sharing - Sig

Polished
Everything works very well together here - particularly like the way the bass and guitar lock together.

I was in Switzerland a few years back on a ski holiday - I'm not a great skier and the best part for me was just being high up in the mountains taking in the view (and the bars!)

This is such a great song, Neil. I think it's your best instrumental track (I love your chord changes) and your vocals are spectacular. It sounds as though you are singing with more and more freedom - you seem very comfortable and confident on this.

Your artistry is growing exponentially. This is really superb, Neil. Straight to my iPod, and thanks for that.

Wow!
Now THERE'S a solid recording. The bass is what particularly interests me (oddly). It fits in the mix perfectly, always driving the rhythm with a lot of carefully-played movement. ... I just love the "production values" of this piece, Neil. Glad I caught it. I learn a lot about mixing from listening to your skillful work.
Peace.

A
great post Neil and this is one of your very best, a really great recording and your vocals are superb.
Very crisp and clear recording, your production skills are always top notch and even more so on this.
I love the intro, guitars sound great with your vocals and just the bass drum playing before that lovely roll into the main groove!
Love the chord changes too, some clever things going on here Neil, beautiful guitar tones and this has been put together very well.
Yes I very much love this and the icing on the cake for me is the bass along with your acoustic guitar, really great sound.

Very much enjoyed!

Love the thick kick drum. Nice Midi drums Neil! What did you use for those? Great bass sound. Hell, everything is really well done. I'm going out on a limb but this might one of your finest songs production and performance wise, and also lyrically. Cool vocal harmony parts. You have a style all your own Neil. Thanks for all the comments!
Despite retiring, my life just seems to be getting busier and busier, and I'm finding I have less and less time to get involved at MJ.

Can I just thank everyone above for your kind comments. I hadn't thought of this song as particularly special - for me, "Lost In Translation" is a much more interesting song, both musically and lyrically. So such positive comments here are a bit of a surprise.

Thanks very much, your comments are ALWAYS really appreciated!

Good evening Neil.
I was not here long ..... and I have probably missed something .....;o)
But now, tonight, "Signs of Life" has arrived on my pod. Do not ask me why .... I have arranged the song between "Gulaga Dreaming" and "Make Me Smile" ...
Maybe I'm just too nostalgic or old-school .... but the sentiments fit perfectly ...

It is a beautiful NEW Neil-Tune ... and it is also like to meet a good old friend...
I like those moods ...

Your last two songs are incredibly well ..... Really....

Best wishes from Berlin.
