Colorado River--Better Mix

Description
I got very helpful and direct feedback on the last mix of this piano-vocal song I uploaded yesterday, so I'm back for another try. Vocals are a little more compressed and pulled back; the Native American flute turned into a regular flute, and I fixed a couple of timing things that were bothering me. If you heard it before, I hope it improved for you. If you didn't, imagine a track very much like this one, just a little bit worse--then be happy you heard this one instead.

Lyrics
The Colorado River runs fast
Canyons rushing past
The Colorado River runs fast
And so do I
So do I

I will pursue you
Through the border towns below
And I will catch you
By the city’s distant glow

The Colorado River runs deep
Rocking you off to sleep
The Colorado River runs deep
And so do I
So do I

I will embrace you
While we ride the water’s flow
And I'll support you
Where the water doesn't go

The Colorado River runs dry
Under a desert sky
The Colorado River runs dry
And so do I
So do I

I will lose you
When the current gets too low
But you know I'd still choose you
If again I got to go
Down the Colorado

thx feter!
You were the first commenter yesterday and you were very tactful about the vocals being too high in the mix--I appreciate your kind and on-target feedback!

You're too kind
In your comment--but in recording this song (yesterday), I think did realize that I do MUCH better with no click track--definitely feels more natural than some of my other efforts...

Much better mix
Very nice, the song is able to shine much more with the balance this mix shows. Very nice job. The emotion comes through so much better on this one. Great job!

Thanks Char!
Maybe this song is sung by one of the characters in the bluesy duet you just posted after they go their separate ways and have time to reflect....

Great
I don't know why you don't have a major record label. The only ear I use when I listen is that of a fan, not a musician.

Feedback
Nice arrangement - vocals and lyrics are great. I feel this song is a bit slow - otherwise it is beautiful...

River
Very cool and original melody over refreshingly interesting chords. Lovely movement from minor to major and then to sevenths. Vocal expressive and honest as always. Wow, dark ending. I dig it.

Colorado River
This is compelling. The vocals are really nice and clear and carry lots of emotion. Nice production! When the flute comes in is it in the center or is it panned more to the right? Either my headphones are messed up or it sounds slightly to the right. If that's the case I would move it front and center since there is no vocal going on at that time. Same thing with the strings except they are on the left. Just a thought. Otherwise this comes across in a really heartfelt way. Nice job!

Pan position
Hmm, I'll play with the position of the flute & strings. I get your point--the flute kind of takes the place of the vocal at that point. I was trying for more of a "naturalistic" soundstage, but that may have been a rookie mistake!

Yea
Yep, it's just an artistic choice. I find as a listener though that I like the 'main' thing (whatever that is at the moment in the song) to be front and center.

Melancholy
very pretty song with cool lyrics.

This is a good mix.

One comment about the flute: it's playing a melody that is also contained in the right hand of the piano. Kinda superfluous. Can you try to write a melody that is independent of the rest of the song?

Ahh, the flute
I was trying to stay simple...but I'll play with what else I can do... Thanks for listening!

Solid songwriting....
...and to my ears, you've done a nice job presenting it in simple piano and voice format... I like the subtlety of the strings and their place in the mix....

(I could skip the flute, but that's just me... )

I think you did a really nice job on the deceptively simple lyrics, and I think your vocals are just right for the song...

The flute--not the most popular element
Thanks for your listening and comments! I will definitely be experimenting with the flute given yours (and others) lukewarm flute responses...

wonderful
i appreciated the small unexpected changes in the soulful piano that flavored this so beautifully. your in-the-room-with-me-and-singing-directly-to-me kinda vocal delivery is quietly dynamite. excellent!

Michael,
Good songwriting and performance. This production is good, but I didn't hear the last version. You are a very talented guy.
