Description
One of the things I've always wanted to do was to write 'program' music, or music that tells a story and/or evokes imagery. Soundtrack music has always been a favorite of mine, because I'm a storyteller by nature. The inspiration for my MacJams moniker came from the computer game "MYST"-- which astounded me with its beautifully rich graphics and haunting ambient music.

For my 5 year MacJammiversary, I decided to write a song that reflected my love of storytelling and music. The words, "Kenen Gor," are verses taken from a text found in the Myst game Uru. No doubt, my pronunciation of the D'ni language (a working language) is flawed, but oh well...

For those who don't know about the D'ni Universe, here's the Wikipedia link HERE

myst
this would fit rather nicely in the dream like landscape of myst. Your voice blends ever so gracefully with your choice of synths. Reminded me a little of Enya (offered as a compliment, just in case you dislike the group :-) Happy fifth Cat. Way cool new Icon & artwork.

Thank you :)
The synth is from Logic's Sculpture Synth presets. I liked that it had that a familiar and yet otherworldly sound to it. After I recorded the instrumental, I did think it sounded similar to Enya--and in fact I initially 'heard' a lot of Enyaesque layered vocals as a possibility. (I did take that as a compliment, by the way..)
So I opted for some dissonance and close harmonies to try to draw it more towards an eerie, Myst-like texture. At first it was awash in cavernous reverberation, but I drew it back a bit in favor of those who may NOT like to vacation in K'Veer....

Thank you for listening and leaving a comment!

I don't know
about the real meaning of the D'ni Universe, but I do know about the universe you create with this lovely music,Cat. You have accomplished exactly what your description explains: created a gentle and peaceful universe that is comforting and inviting. Programme music it is, certainly. I very much enjoy the sensitive vocal work, especially the echoing harmony and your restraint. Perfect graphic, too. Such a pleasant composition. I am glad to have heard it.
Peace.

Hi Paul
Thanks so much for stopping by and commenting! It's nice to know that the song--even with its specific facets of the D'ni universe--was still accessible and enjoyable :)

Very interesting, I had to go check out the wiki link so I could clearly hear the story your telling. I just love your voice...it's so soulful and angelic. Such a beautiful song Mystified and congrats on your 5 year MacJammiversary!!

terragen...
Hehe... you always have surprising facets, I didn't know you played with 3D modelers. I've not looked at Terragen for over 6 years, is there a MacOSX version? (Not like I need to learn/play with aNOTHER app...)

Oh, the music... very soft and provocatively eerie, but soothing. It would fit right into that ahead-of-its-time otherworldly game.

V is for Cat!

Drakonis

Thank you, drak!
I happily credit Cyan, Inc. for sending me down the path of exploration and discovery--both in Myst and beyond the game. It was actually Riven that cause my jaw to drop to the floor over the gorgeous graphics and ambient music.

I bought Bryce 3D and went a little crazy learning how to create computer graphics--but it was always the texture maps that I loved the most. I even enrolled in 2 semesters of a Lightwave class--again to discover that, while modeling polygons was fun, texture mapping was more fun.

Anyway...that was a long time ago, now, and I'm happy to say that 10 years later, I've enjoyed both 3D modeling and creating ambient, 'Myst-ified' music. Who'd a thunk...??

Never say never, I say!

"Chev shehm" for the listen and for the kind words.

How inspirational on so many fronts. The use of a mystical language is very cool. Doing your own artwork (ala Drakonis) is also really powerful (now you have me curious enough to check out Terragen). I also really was swept away by Myst. I think you really capture the essence here with the percussive melodic hammer instruments (whatever they are). 5 Years is longer than many marriages, so its quite an anniversary. People say if you do something for an hour a day for five years you are considered an expert. So five years is a mark of attainment. Congratulations!

lovely exchange
A conversation between beauty and the soul. Captured well in this tune/story - a true expression. Myst blew me away too. you certainly captured the spine of your goal- that it evokes imagery and tells a story.
Happiest of anniversaries... so glad to have been able to listen to your talents.

Back to yer D'ni roots....
A very neat and Myst-ish sound....

Mind you, those lyrics could have a hint of Lovecraft to them. Please check that you are not accidentally opening a portal for dread Cthulhu...

Great use of the "Scuplture' plug-in
from Logic. I haven't yet figured out how to deploy it in a song, but you've used it to great effect: this is a evocative soundscape, even though I'm sadly unfamiliar with the universe of the D'ni and their consonant-rich language.

loving this. you always have a flair for the dramatic and this is no exception. the harmonies and overall ambiance are wonderful; now that guitar: i love it. is that real? it's got a real west coast 60's fender twin vibe to it. nice to hear you again.

Hi michael
Thanks for the kind words here :)
The 'guitar' sound is the Logic Sculpture Synth preset "Bamboo Air Stings."

I was dabbling around with sounds and thought it would pair well with my voice. So it's just that synth and my voice for the track. Nifty sound, eh?
Logic is a fantastic program!

Must Make More Myst Music
Lovely vocal tones here, evoking a kind of loneliness. The synth choices work really well here, interesting in their sound quality and in their spare use to great effect. Overall haunting with solitude and expectation. You have created a wonderful soundscape to compliment the feel within the game Cat. (Like your artwork too!)

It's been a while since I've played Uru. I am stuck on one level where I have to jump a stream (or something like that) and I can't line up the box to get across. Too bad as I liked the game a lot.

Take care,
Doug
