Description
In late October, I was in Seattle’s acoustically awesome Benaroya Hall, listening to Ben Folds “backed” by the Seattle Symphony. The whole concert was really terrific, but the encores were jaw-droppingly breathtaking. He’s an amazing pianist, and hearing his music orchestrated with a live, full contingent of symphonic instruments really inspired me.

Shortly thereafter, I started working out this song on the piano. Throughout the creation of the piano music and then the orchestration that followed, I tried to hold onto the inspiration I came home with the night I heard Ben Folds tear it up with the Seattle Symphony. There was a certain feeling for me that night during the encores, of just being enveloped in this huge music, that I tried to bring forth in the big, extended build of this song. I don’t know that I even remotely achieved that lofty goal, but I sure had fun trying!

This song got it's name because of some odd, still unresolved technical difficulties that eventually resulted in calling in the Apple engineers. They are still trying to figure out what is causing a couple of interesting bugs, and for awhile it looked like the project would have to be shelved until an answer was found. Eventually I discovered a workaround that allowed me to continue orchestrating, and thus the song was rescued from the ashes.

Many thanks to Shay (kassia), for the multitude of listens and thoughtful critique, and to Jack (davisamerica) for listening to an early version and encouraging me to “go for it”.

Windham Hill

The opening piano arpeggios reminded me very much of a Windhall Hill piano sampler that I listened to a lot in the early 1990s. Same exact rhythm and chordal structure (perhaps I'll try to dig back through my old music to identify the piece for you).

Your treatment of piano is always excellent. Would you please share how you go about recording it? Do you play it "live"? (on a software instrument, I would imagine).

The string orchestration is convincing and would sound great live. However, in this software setting the strings sound choppy and dry, with definite spaces between the notes. Perhaps a bit more reverb and duplicating/offsetting tracks slightly would smooth things out.

The volume occasionally becomes overwhelming at the peak moments.

Overall this is a very pleasant piece, but it's all been done before. I *KNOW* that there's a quirky, adventurous and daring musical soul buried somewhere inside you -- please bring it out! You have a true gift on the piano. Stretch your musical wings, try something new and daring, let your spirit fly!

from the Ashes of KSA...
I really like many parts of this. However, there are some things that interfere with my total immersion in this piece. Some of the parts, like the oboe and horns at 1:30 are gorgeous additions. But many of the string parts sound like "strings played on a keyboard", and the build toward the climax, 2:55 on, felt too choppy, where you switched too quickly to completely different orchestration (like at 3:28)... I really loved the organ addition, but it seemed too sudden, and then was gone again. I'd love to see the different parts more "interlocked", and not so discrete, I guess. But of course, just one opinion. A lot of really pretty passages in here. Great work with the horns, especially. But I would love to hear a version-2 of this :-) Hopefully without whatever technical difficulties are plaguing your system!
ttfn,
Drakonis

Karen your work comes across as so complete and intuitive... as if you didn't compose it at all, but instead discovered it, much like an archeologist... you've figured out how to tap the emotional well, with what at first seems a fairly simple vehicle... but it's your treatment that brings this all the way home... stellar work my friend...

Phoenix in Seattle
I have listened to this several times, starting with this morning, and wanted to take a bit of time to think about the piece before commenting. This is a tremendous effort, Karen. It is amazing what inspiration can do for the creative process. Your piano plays a nice melody throughout, and your orchestration work is very well thought out and well performed. I like your builds at about 2 minutes and then the big one at about 3:15; I like how you repeated the small passage 3 times in each build, with that 3rd one being the real crescendo - very nice. Also that 2nd passage really projects a very large full sound and it comes out beautifully. It all sounds wonderful.

One comment on the ending - after the last drop off, leaving just the piano to finish out the piece, I feel like the piano lacks the same presence that it has through the rest of the piece; sounds to me like the volume level is a tad low. Also I noticed about 10 seconds of silence at the end of the piece, or perhaps your fade continues and I did not have my volume up enough to notice; none of this detracts from this accomplishment. You have created yet another masterpiece - congrats to you, and thank you for sharing this with us.

I'm always so glad to get your thoughtful comments, and that this song more or less worked for you means a lot to ME! I think i forgot to move that little ending arrow right up against the end of the fade out, so you're probably right that there's 10 seconds of unintended nothingness. oops. i'll listen to the last bit of piano volume - after awhile it's so easy to lose perspective about volumes especially. thanks again for taking the time to listen and comment - your support is very much valued by me!

This was tranquilizing
In the best possible way: I listened to it twice over and I'm markedly calmer than I was 10 minutes ago! The piano melody is very pretty, and the orchestration is artful and subtle. I particularly liked the French horn-like swells a little before 2:00, and then the ff strings after 3:00.

thrill
this is such an uplifting work, full of positive emotion, a thrill of a listen.

i really like the orchestration - the dynamics are definitely NOT Windham Hill: this is much better than that. Someone mentioned there being (minor) gaps between notes on the strings: increasing the release time slightly would fix that better than adding more reverb. And I think it's fine that some instruments make brief appearances, the classics are full of examples of doing that. Follow your heart.

thanks

Bill
thanks so much for this comment, it especially means a lot to me. the string gaps were intentional (though clearly ill-advised) - they're in places where in my head at least, the jump between notes would be big enough that it couldn't be bowed smoothly, and you'd hear a break. guess i'm wrong about that - lol - oh well. thanks again bill :)

SmokeyVW said 2785 days ago (December 11th, 2009)
violins
if there are 6 or 12 violins, or whatever, i doubt even the best players can all change notes exactly in unison.

i'm no expert, but...
even if you listen to one violinist, a note that follows another on the same string will receive a new finger or a fast glide - no gap. if they need to switch from one string to another, the bow can start on the next note before the first note ends - again, no gap.

the only place a gap might occur is when the players change bowing direction. even then i suspect a pro will keep that gap very brief. if you really wanted to, i guess you could figure out the bowing notations (which i think follow the melodic phrasing) and place minor gaps there - and it might help bring out the phrasing.

maybe a real violinist will step in and explain what's really going on here!

Beautiful
piano work as always on this piece. Really like the melody you establish in this song. I do agree that the instruments could be a bit more lifelike, tough to accomplish with software instruments, sometimes increasing the attack and adding a bit of reverb will help but i am sure you know more than I do about such things. Great as it is. Enjoyed it as always.

Good job Karen!!
Overall a nearly perfect tune.
Such a positive vibration all around.

Although I like the arpeggios a lot they come a bit too often in my ears, seems that they are always in the middle of the action, always there.
Makes it difficult to feel all the dynamic processes you worked out.
Would be nice to hear the music`s breath, some breaks to change the view.
Don`t get me wrong Karen, you`re an awesome instrumentalist and composer, but this fullness (and I know that it can grow immensely, if you let it grow) is much more impressive when giving a chance for the listener to relax. I think the tune will be longer fresh rhythmically speaking.

Thx for sharing your enormous talent with us!!

Hi Karen - all your stuff has got a wonderfully balanced sense of melody and harmony - this also has a hypnotic effect of the repeated piano line moving in and out of the mix. Inspirational
I remember when you came back from that Ben Folds concert. This is wonderful! I've never seen Ben Folds live, but I'll sign up next time he is in the bay area if I can catch just a small amount of what it is that drove you to produce this. Beautiful orchestration. It stands great on its own, but I can't help but hear vocal lines over this.

I'm very curious about your technical problems. Computers are wonderful tools for musicians, but when things don't work right they can really get in the way.

Ed Hannifin said 2784 days ago (December 13th, 2009)
Well, I finally got here, Karen...
I like the way that you have influences and inspirations, but you're neither defined nor confined by them... You kinda go where you go, and you go competently but without letting technique get bigger than heart...

There is ALWAYS a sense of heart in your music, and a naturalness to the roll of the tempo....

This is very pretty, start to finish, and builds with subtlety and taste...

Sorry for being late tonight
I had several power outages tonight and it really interrupted my night. I wanted to listen to this song a few more times, because I don't feel like I want to give it just one listen and then comment. I know how much work you put into your compositions so I just want to give it fair play. The song, as usual, is very well done; very Magnatone with the wandering melody. I have noted that your signature approach is that your melodies move along with a very active but even pace and this song definitely shows that style. But in addition, this one is nice because with the symphonic additions I feel like you were able to stretch out a bit and add some new nuances that are not quite as instinctive for you. One thing I really like is multi part interplay, and one thing I find interesting is when different melodies play together at different paces. I wanted to listen to this more and consider that, because I hear some of that going on. I think this song was a good progression for you and it will be nice to hear what comes next as well. No, like you said in chat, it doesn't remind me at all of Ben Folds! After Classical Smackdown I was half hoping for some real key punishing! But you didn't go there on this!

Music Box Maestro
Hard work on this gave your fans, like me, impressive results. Ben Folds must be a very important composer to you (and many others), I don't know of him, but if Windham HIll and New Age was the inspiration for this piece you nailed it, if not, you discovered it!
Your pieces, back to back, sound like one piece of music, a consistent approach, your music boxes just make people happy, thanks for sharing your talents with us here and lifting some gloom-the real job at hand!

Building...
Skyscrapers, are we? As I listened, I was reminded of a photo essay I recently saw of the workers who built New York's skyscrapers. This piece would make the perfect background music for that story.

Wonderfully constructed and orchestrated, resulting in a magnificent build that takes the listener higher.. and higher... to the top of the town.

hello AGAIN gaylen! as has been pointed out MANY times in these song comments, my little ditty sounds NOTHING like Ben Folds in ANY way - LOL - but, in spite of that, the inspiration from hearing his concert with the symphony orchestra IS in here (somewhere)! thanks for the revisit!

About
About midway through listening to this very warm and hopeful piece of yours Karen I suddenly heard an intruding salvo of slashing strings. WHAT? This couldn't be Karen - not the one who's music is always so filled with joy. Turns out some weird Itunes cross wiring thing from a classical station playing something I quickly heard way more than I ever wanted to. Fixing the problem I restarted your work and reveled in the flow and lovely playing of The Phoenix. And speaking of the playing I want to pay special kudos for the pacing, and relaxed control you bring to this. And the orchestration, never overwhelming the piano, was wonderful.
A real pleasure to hear Karen.
Cheers,
Charlie

Rise again...
The piano here is so stately, there's an ease and yet a dignity to it that is, I expect, hard to capture. Lovely shimmery build after the 3:20 mark or so, which you let rise, subside, then rise magnificently again. Orchestration is well conceived, emotive and powerful. I do like your use of the denouement and I thought that for some reason the feel of life that was present in the piano in the intro seemed to be diminished here - not sure why.

So glad that you listened to Jack and went for it!!

Many thanks Karen,
Doug

Hi Doug
i'll have to consider what you might mean about the "feel of life" in the piano becoming more diminished as the song progressed (if i understood that right) - glad you enjoyed it anyway - and thanks for stopping by!

Now just what did I mean ? Hmmmmm....
What I thought I heard was in the ending only - the last 30 seconds or so. I have gone back today to listen to what struck me when listening yesterday and compared the intro and ending - I found that the ending is a little more subdued in dynamics perhaps. Maybe yesterday I had expected things to be the same at either end of the song and the comment came from that place.

It's been a joy to revisit your work again to find out what I thought I was talking about.

Be well,
Doug

for the ride - and for the download. A lot of catching up to do, so I'm not commenting a lot this month, but just want to say I listened and enjoyed a lot! I've got a new pair of speakers (Alesis M1Active520) and I believe they do a decent job on this song :-)

Thanks again, and take care.

Very nice orchestration
Love the arrangement - nicely produced - a pristine sound and a lovely building cresendo. How did you get the voices to work so well. I presume they are synthesized, but they sound great. Very impressive.

Of 2 minds
Your orchestration skills are really getting up there. Lots of cool stuff and a fantastic climax at 4:00.

Now about that piano. The orchestra is going through a wide range of dynamics and tone colours. But throughout it all the piano keeps playing arpeggiated 16th in that 3,3,2 rhythm, really without much development. The contrast with what's happening in the orchestra is large. Is this a conscious decision? I would give the piano more development in its material.

Yes Karen!
Your love of the instrument, your enthusiasm for music and the inspiration are all here. This is a really moving piece! I love it when you get all inspired, because you have such a depth of skill to bring to bear on whatever you are doing. Not to mention a work ethic that won't let you stop until you get what you are after. This is just a tremendous musical endeavor! This builds wonderfully and ends like a sweet goodnight kiss.
You should be proud, I know I am, for you!

This is a blissful euphoric piece. I could imagine this being in a movie or a soundtrack. Your piano playing is superb and I enjoyed the harmonies. Very rich sound. Nice! Thanks for sharing! It's really a great piece. The piano base really builds up.
I had to agree with some comments related to the strings on 0:25 sounding a little "too-synth". I think the horns were really well placed to the orchestration.
I'm trying to do one, and I know it's really a lot of work! So I really appreciate how good your sounds :)

Lovely changes
I like how this moves and doesn't stay with one theme too long. I do admire the subtle touches and handing of the orchestration. I am such a harsh, hack and slash, riff based songwriter that this kind of work is beyond me. Love the Swell after 3 minutes. Epic!

Beautiful
Sort of a "Morning Has Broken" sound for me - extremely beautiful and well played. I like the interplay between the other instruments and the piano - one going one way, another going another. The rise and full is inspirational, too. A delightful piece of music - glad I caught up with it! Congratulations, Karen.
