Take Me To Heart (w thoddi, alfalpha, kevmikwa)

 Genre: Rhythm and Blues

Description
The 4th song (and last one which is likely to make a full production) from my "Swiss Period".
Written on my friend Daniel's nylon string acoustic, and recorded with Thor Oliversen (thoddi) playing the beautiful, bluesy lead guitar, Mike Watkins (kevmikwa) playing the terrific drums and Alfred Solti (alfalpha) on his signature quirky keys. I'm on rhythm guitars, bass and all vocals.
"Take Me To Heart" is a phrase that was bumping around in my head at the time - for no particular reason, although I have discovered a possible source since then in a Gram Parsons song. I think it's different enough from Gram's stuff though :)
I love playing and singing this style of music, and although I put the genre as "Rhythm and Blues", I mean the old style R&B rather than the modern version (as if you couldn't figure that out!).
Thanks to Mike, Alf and Thor for their contributions here - as I've said before, I'd love to play live with this "band". Special thanks also to Anne Cozean for her advice and contribution to the vocals - sorry I filled all the harmony space up Anne :(

Anyway, I hope you enjoy this - I enjoyed making it.

A remixed, much higher quality version of "Take Me To Heart" is available for download: HERE

Lyrics
Take Me To Heart
© 2009 Neil Porter

Take me to heart
Just don't take me for granted
Tear me apart
But don't leave me that way
Where do we start
Now that it's over
Take me to heart

When we first met
You got just what you wanted
Time and again
You got your own way
Where do we start
Now that it's over
Take me to heart

Stop me if I've said
Something that doesn't need saying
Stop me if I've said
Something wrong
Tell me if this
Is just some kind of game you're playing
And I'll be gone

SOLOS

Stop me if I've said
Something that doesn't need saying
Stop me if I've said
Something wrong
Tell me if this
Is just some kind of game you're playing
And I'll be gone

Got this thing in my head
That you'll set me free
was it something I said
I just can't let it be
Where do we start
Now that it's over
Take me to heart

Hope you have some regrets
When you walk out that door
But I'll get back my heart
Pick myself off the floor
Where do we start
Now that it's over
Take me to heart

Stop me if I've said
Something that doesn't need saying
Stop me if I've said
Something wrong
Tell me if this
Is just some kind of game you're playing

Great groove, sounds like a real band locking in. Has a classic minor blues feel. Tasty lead break...just right. Nice job on the back up vocals. All in all, a really well-crafted and seamless piece of writing.

This is the second song I've done with Thor, Alf and Mike, and I've also done songs with Mike or Alf before - it does feel a bit like a band when we get going on something new. Thanks for listening.

Really pleased that you enjoyed this one. I'm most comfortable in this style I think, despite never having played it before "Things Must Change". I always baulk at using the "R&B" genre, because the current crop of R&B is very different to what it used to be "back in the old days". Cheers from Oz!

Nice stuff. Good lyrics and the music sets an appropriate mood for it.

In the basic rhythm the guitar and bass double each other. That feels redundant to me. (When the organ solo starts, it even becomes a threeway doubling.) I would let the bass do something different. For instance 1(23)41 for a lazy feeling, or 1&2& for more drive. But that away from that accent on 3 and (4)&. Just a suggestion.

Thanks for the listen Vic. At first I wasn't sure what you meant, but after a few listens, there are probably some bass notes that I could have left out. Not sure it's a big issue, but I'll keep it in mind on the CD version. Cheers!

I love the feel ..
.. in this. I'm a bit picky on the bluesy stuff I like .. mostly due to lack of feeling, which is so crucial to this kind of music. I think you guys have nailed it. Excellent "real band" feel.. you sound like your in the same room jammin', so kudos on the production too. Lovely tone on Thoddi's geetar f'sure.

Getting a "real band feel" is a real compliment, and something I guess I was really aiming for in this track. We've just started to do this in my local band, and do far it's sounding pretty good, but quite a bit different to this (need thoddi!). Glad you stopped by for a listen.

I like how you're using your voice on this...
...and in particular, the way the harmony/second vocal bits come in an out... The mix, pitch and phrasing of them just really works for me...

I love the lead guitar, organ lines, and the drums....

I think I also like the skillful way you make use of more or less standard songwriting structure here, Neil... The lines are shorter, as are the verses and chorus, and the repetition works for you... I suspect the whole groove will stay with me through the work day... It's very 'songish', and it works....

Good one....

Ed
jiguma said 2829 days ago (December 21st, 2009)
Ed
My first attempt at "oooohs" in a song :) The structure is so simple and the chords relatively so, that I almost skipped it when I first started fiddling with it in our lounge room (with views of Mont Blanc I hasten to add) in Switzerland. Seemed too straight forward - too easy. Once I got home though I realised that with the right people playing it, it might work out OK. Thor, Alf and Mike were definitely what was required.
Lyrically, I've been taking into account the fact that when I'm playing live, I have an awful time remembering words (and chords for that matter!), so for songs that I suspect the band might be doing, I try to use the least number of words possible so that I have some chance of remembering them. Some of my lyrics are just too complex to remember - repetition is good :)
Thanks for the comments Ed - always appreciate hearing how a song effects you. Best wishes to you and the family for Christmas and 2010.
Cheers from Oz,
Neil

Take Me To Heart
I like the subtle way you get back to the I from the IV chord in the verse. The vocals fit the emotional content of the lyrics really well. Cool to hear that Thoddi guitar again, he hasn't been around as much the last 6 months or so, and the keys, drums, and bass are all first rate. I do hear Anne some in the background, sounds great as usual. Great job everyone, I hope to hear more from this group in the future

Thanks for the comment - anything fancy about "I" and "IV" stuff is purely accidental, as I have very little in the way of formal musical education. I was really hoping to have Anne doing backup vocals on this, but it just didn't work out this time (although I'm very hopeful that it will next time around). My bgvs were actually a demo for Anne, but sounded OK so we left them in.
I certainly hope to have more songs with this lineup (plus maybe a few other people). I think we're close to the point where we can do a song as close to "live" as possible - with each of us just playing one instrument - as if we were on stage. It's kind of a goal of mine. Thanks for the listen.

Such a great song Neil. I enjoyed jamming along to this one. Very good songwriting. And your good production and musician skills really shines through the things you have put into it. Very enjoyable song to listen to, and a cool laid back groove. Just the way I like it.

Thanks for letting me on this great song. When Alf and Mike added their stuff it added a new dimension, and the final product sounds very pro.

Firstly, thanks for your contribution here - along with Mike and Alf, you've taken this from a pretty average song to one that I'm quite proud of. I'm really amazed how you so consistently produce really classy guitar parts - no flashy "look at me" soloing, just solid, bluesy parts which just work.
I'm really glad you enjoyed the song - hopefully we can do some more.

Great tune Neil.
What stands out in my mind about this work is how well you guys mesh. The sound is genuine and live feeling - this could have been recorded in a club or other live venue, where of course you were all playing together. The fact that everyone is sitting at different points around the globe is quite awe inspiring. So congrats on a great piece of work.

Beautifully done
Your skills are very solid, Neil. The performances are always very fine (I like the Swiss pieces most of all, sorry to see them come to an end). I think I preferred the last one, and I'm not sure why. Maybe because its 'architecture' is not as polished and assured as this one's? Not a complaint (who could complain about music like this??), just a sensation I have. Maybe it'll pass.
Nevertheless, much enjoyed!

Maybe I'll have to go back to Switzerland ;)
I wrote 4 or 5 while I was there - 3 have seen the light of day, so at some stage I might to mould the others into some sort of music that's song-like. It's interesting that Signs Of Life is your favourite - it's the one that kind of holds the group together. I prefer "Lost In Translation" lyrically and "Take Me To Heart" musically (with that band, that's pretty obvious). I'm glad you enjoyed the three (and don't forget to have a listen to Blaky Smith's "Sur le Sable" as well). Best wishes for a happy and constructive 2010.

Warning: I'm going to ramble ...
Thanks to the folks who have said nice things about my contribution. It's been an honor to be a part of this band. Some words for my mates:

Alf: The almost bell-sounding first entry of the organ in my left ear (around 0:30) and the hushed, almost church-like feel immediately thereafter is so great and sets the mood like nothing else could. The solo rips in an understated way, of course. You are the master.

Thor: When you said you wanted to touch up your original guitar track, I got very nervous, as I'd grown quite attached to it. I now find that the blending of the new part with the old part is sublime - there are some new touches (like the "comping" at 2:55+) that I now can't live without. Floored, man ... really.

Neil: It starts with the songwriting ... I am not sure you've ever written a song that hasn't inspired me to play along. I am super-impressed with your intervals on the backing vocals throughout - "where do we start" at 0:56; "stop me" at 2:28; the "oohs" at 2:55 and 3:47; I kinda wish the "oohs" at the outro (4:39+) got more play because they're great against the verse chords.

I have a quick hitter on the sound of the drums in the mix that escaped me in my earlier listen. It sounds like the drum kit has been converted to mono or at least panned into a thin slice of the stereo field, slightly left of center (if I'm wearing my headphones correctly). This may have been in an effort to give each instrument its own sonic spot, and if so, it's hard to argue that logic. Guess I'm used to hearing drum tracks spread out a bit more. It's an awfully nitpicky nit, considering how hard it is to slot all of the sounds competing for attention. I almost deleted the paragraph, but since MacJams is about the free exchange of thoughts and ideas, I thought it smart to leave it in.

About your goal from a prior post, Neil, someone needs to mark my words: you and I will be in the same room playing live at some future spot along Lyell's line. As I see it, we will have quite a repertoire of tunes to choose from!

Hmmm ... I wonder how much it would cost to get two plane tickets (from Stavanger Lufthavn Sola and Dulles International to Merimbula) and enough gas money to get Alf from Cobargo to swing by and pick us up on the way to your rehearsal spot? Do you think you could talk your drummer into letting me borrow his kit for a couple hours? Someday, I promise you ...
jiguma said 2827 days ago (December 24th, 2009)
Mike!
Ramble all you like my friend :) I think this little "band" works because we all have similarities (mainly in the way we approach a song) as well as differences in musical background. Personally, I love the result. Enough about that.
Mike, the note about the way the kit is spread in this recording is interesting. When I was trying to get the mix to work, I found it difficult (as I always do) to get much clarity in the bottom end - kick and toms - on the kit track. The only way I could figure was to use EQ to boost the appropriate frequencies (80Hz and 2250Hz from memory) as well as a little compression on the bottom end in Ozone. On checking, I also had Ozone's "Multiband Stereo Imaging" switched on, with a reduction of 0.3 on the spread of the kick and tom end of the spectrum. I hadn't noticed this, but if you can hear it, then that's where the culprit must be. It's great that we have sorted out so much about transferring files effectively. Probably need to look at this issue and sort it as well next song.
As far as fares go for a get-together, I'd happily volunteer to pay Alf's petrol costs if you'd like to cover airfares for Thor and yourself :) Our drummer would not only be happy to let you use his kit (I think you might prefer his e-drums, his real kit is pretty dodgy!), but I envisage a gig might be involved.
Whatever, I have a plan for our next collab (no song yet, but at least I have a plan) - each player only does what they could do onstage/live (so my usual multi-instrument role would have to be trimmed a little). I'll get back to you on this.
Once again, thanks for letting me use some of your precious time on this - Happy Christmas and a brilliant 2010 to you and your family.

Nice clean mix and some really outstanding execution from the collaborators. Really digging those vocals and how they sink well into the composition. Laid back, easy listening that keeps your attention all the way through. Thanks for sharing.

Take me to heart
Guys, this is awesome. Love the sound of those live drums. The song flows so smoothly. Great smoky tone in the voice. I can't add anything to what was said about the bass, guitar and keys. Killer performances.
Classic blues, plus rhythm (and a chorus); I agree: this is what should be called R&B.

Take Y'ALL to heart...
Neil, Thor & Mike...

Thanks again for a wonderful collab...

I'm thinking that, perhaps, we might get some kind of grant to get together, 'live-wise', now that Neil has an official 'Australian Songwriter' certificate from APRA....

'K then Neil, what's holding you up from getting a 'MJ Grant'?

Get Thor & Mike 'down here' for a couple of weeks! (I'm only 80 Kms up the road)

Serious Jamming will happen!

Cheers,
Alf
All the Best to you all!!

Alf!
Now if Gough was still PM, a grant just might be possible. Ah ..... those were the good old days!
Hope you had a great Christmas - catch you in the New Year if not before.
Love to Jae.

Slow rock is good - especially if you're dancing with that special someone - at least as far as I remember :)
Thanks for the listen and for the comment Tadashi. I always appreciate you dropping by. "The guitar cries" indeed - I love Thor's playing.
Best wishes for 2010 from Australia Tadashi-san.

One of your best
This one is definitely one of your best. Lots of clarity and superb spacing. Quite a crew here to make this brew, especially like the shotgun combo of Thor & Alfred. Nice mastering as this one goes to heart.

"Quite a crew" indeed. I think Alf and Thor work perfectly together - no-one overplays, and every note is thought out and well placed. Love doing songs with them and Mike.

This is the real Deal Neil
This is R & B as it should be played, instead of the slapstick junk you hear on the radio now.

Love the song, production, and the players are all so fine, my friend.

Great collab on a great song Neil, you can all be proud of this one.

Perfect Production
The first few seconds, and I'm already jealous! Great live feel to this, and a really smooth, groovin' tune...listen to how well those backing vocals sit! Wonderful work troops!

Top
Top everything in fact: song writing, production, performance. Gosh this is great. I never experienced a more "band" feeling in any other e-collab song before. And Neil, never ever change a detail to that distinctive velvet voice of yours. Loved it from a to z.

Walt
Thanks - so good to see you back here. I think a lot of the band "feel" is down to Alf - he works around/with the guitar, bass and drums to provide a seamless "glue" to the song. His keys aren't the "in your face" variety, but he's always doing (or planning) some interesting fill or unexpected chord. Then of course Thor and Mike are exceptional players as well. I love this style of song. The vocal style is something I'm stuck with :)
Happy 2010!

Tell it!
THANK YOU for reminding us in the intro notes what R&B was and is... the label has come to mean nothing in today's Big Label pigpile. This is a whole lot cleaner than the old sweaty Stax fare, but WOW, those Booker T. keys, that tasteful Thoddi lead serving the song and of course the rhythm section...man, this is "heavy stuff comin' down, brothers!" Last but not least, I dig your vox, Neil. BEAUTIFUL finishing, too. Thx for the DL.

Superb song, had to download this one. Whish we could have got our song "Martyn and Josephine" to have sounded as good as this, it has a similar feel. Wonderful playing throughout. A pleasure to hear

Ahhh
so this is how it should be done....listening to this is a masterclass in 'how to do'...unlike my efforts, which now I understand where they go wrong....leave some space..... don't fill everything up with guitar etc ...especially bits that are crap or make no sense......truly inspirational ...oh and a pretty bloody good song too ....should come round there more often, See Ya Jarvo.
