Lyrics
Wrapped up in a blanket
Watching bullshit on TV
I’m not worried about tomorrow
Because my head is very clear

The cat is in the kitchen
And I’m sipping on a coke
Met some yesterfriends on facebook
But the majority’s a joke

I’m free
I’m free

Stories in the paper
And the paper’s way too thick
Just by looking at the headlines
I get scrupulously sick

I’m breathing brown tobacco
But the doctor says I’m fine
Since I gave up eating dogfood
And cut down drastically on wine

I’m free
I’m free

On this very moment I feel emptiness inside
Missing my old buddies Johnny Walker Black & White
Staring at a biscuit and a lukewarm cup of tea
Feeling kind of granny-ish, but at least I’m free
Thank god, I’m free.

Looking for my car keys
Thought I’d left them on the door
Can’t remember in- or outside
What’s that vomit on the floor

Gosh it’s nearly Monday
And I haven’t seen my kid
I guess that’s kind of normal
Form men who live like shit

I’m free
I’m free

At last!
What a pleasure to see you back at MJ Walter! This is a surprising post on a number of counts: the fact that you're singing in a higher register is the most obvious, but it's also that you're using guitar more prominently than ever before (in fact, have you ever used guitar?), this is a much more "up" production than anything I've heard from you before, and finally, the lyrics are much more "everyday" and less introspective than your previous songs (fantastic set of words btw!).
Walt, this is ..... dare I say it .... really commercial (in the nicest possible way).
I really really like this one. You have come a long way in the past 12 months. Much more accessible than anything of yours that I can remember, but still with the "Moorlandt touch".
We were in Amsterdam briefly earlier in the year, but just too much happening to get in touch - maybe next time we're there (which may be next July).
Best wishes to you and yours for a successful, happy and healthy 2010.

Thanks sir! You know, I'm so glad I could finally find some time again to make a new song. And I guess you're right about everything you say: the higher register, the guitars, and most definitely the accessibility of the song. Well, maybe this is moorlandt 2.0
Thanks so much again, Neil.

glad to have you back (what Neil said!)
This is a great comeback track, Walt! Sounds kinda 80's/ Twin peaks, and your voice sounds lovely , especially in the chorus. Great lyrics - I like my own company, but also feel guilty about it... granny-ish indeed!

Well, glad to be back for sure. And I hope to spend some time here again more often. At least it's great to see 'the old chaps' popping in. And from what I've heard from them so far (but I still have to catch up about a million songs), they've grown to super pro proportions. That doesn't include you of course, you've always sounded super pro:-) Thanks for popping in, mate.

a definite up vibe, but like Neil says, still has your unique signature sound. I especially liked the synth work. Very deftly placed in the mix and the sounds worked perfectly together. The off time part was brilliant.

You're back! And with lighthearted melancholy - making the listening all the more satisfying. I like this one, yesteryears and then some. It seems the recession hasn't beaten you into submission, you're still looking at life with a good dose of humor and satire. Beats are fresh, guitar sounded awesome and your voice, yum yum. It is so good to see you going at it again! Love, Marc.

very cool!
I love the words for this and the whole thing is very well put together. The sort of chorus effect on the vocal seems to be a bit more filtered than I thought I would like, but it ended up growing on me. Reminds me of Stan Ridgeway who I always liked.

I second your opinion on the chorus effect. Let's call it 'the best I could do with an impatient soul', as I really wanted that kind of effect, but perhaps a bit less on the forefront. I'm not familiar with Stan Ridgeway, so thanks, I will surely check him out. Merci for comments!

Great per usual
Great to see you again, it's been some time! This have the Moorlandt flavor to it, this time with a killer melody and lyrics a la Bukowski (?). The lyrics are contradicting, but so is life. The vocals are are really well performed, I am hooked already after a few seconds (gave me the "This is England", The Clash, 1980s) feeling. Everything is very good about this song, the refrain, oh my, and the vocal sound of another Bowie, yet, it's all you and nothing but you. Thank you my friend.

too many good lines
i started to detail my favorite lines, then realized i ended up with the entire song. Excellent Write! i read it at the office, and it was good without sound even then.

when i heard the opening measures, i saw/heard/felt/smelled the Marlboro Man riding by... something about that guitar pattern is Western Cowboy .. i liked it.

but walter, why you wanna hold back on that vocal volume?
did you restrain the volume until 1:57 intentionally?
aarrrrggghhhhh - you had me begging!

i loved the chorused ah ah ah ah's at 2:09 - nice touch.

Hmm... I guess you're dead on considering the vocals. When I started this song, I really wanted to avoid putting my vocals on the forefront (like I mostly did in previous songs) in order to focus much more on the composition and the melody of the song. On the other hand - and this is purely a technical matter - I noticed that it were mainly still the vocals who were causing the song 'peaking' very regularly in GB. These are both the reason why I turned them down. I think the balance is still more or less OK in the headphone (thanks to the chorus effect), but I noticed they are to weak when playing the song on speakers.
Thanks so much for you thoughtful and very sweet comment.

Gleefully Lugubrious!
The arrangement is so spare, tight and punchy I can't say enough about it, the hooks and your vox & lyric punch to the gut. The narrator sounds like a fan of Henry Miller... quite cosmococcic.

I joined here late, and found you late. Nice. I'll fave you so I can track you, and I'll also try to stop in for some "P-Eden" as well.

Cosmococcic... Lugubrious... Help, I can't find a proper translation in my English-Dutch dictionary fore these words. I hope they sound more dangerous as their actual meaning... Thanks for the listen, mate. And a great song you have been cooking in your kitchen.

LOL, sorry about my goofy words!
So sorry. For some reason I made the wildly unlikely assumption that you were a fan of Henry Miller, much of whose novels (which seemed to be barely fiction) seem like the movie this song might be a soundtrack for. "Cosmococc..." whatever, was Henry's fictional name for a fake telegraph/telephone company. Lugubrious is kind of "dismal," but I equate it with an alcohol-soaked version of dismal... again an adjective Henry used liberally.

This arrangement is so nicely done--plenty to listen to but the instrumentation seems totally natural and unforced. Similarly, the vocals convey shades of meaning and emotion, but come across very relaxed! Really nice job...glad I listened!

Well, it might be a new direction. I've been spending quite some time (but that's also more than a year ago) on a site called 'Sellaband'. The norms and criteria were very different from MJ, as you're dealing with non-musicians. The aliens! It's a good thing to escape from the comfortable cocoon now and then. THERE you are!
Missed you terribly, Walter! I'm very glad to see you back here, your music always is crisp, dark, and thought-provoking. This is no exception, super-clean writing and mix, ambivalent lyrics, and your usual great singing voice. I like the upbeat-sounding music, which tries to hide the depressingly unbroken cycle in the lyrics.

I do hope that life allows you to pop into Macjams a little more, you always add a lot of class here.

Thanks a lot, mate. Honesty obliges me to say that these lyrics are not at all autobiographical. I was inspired by a TV program on ex-prisoners, and how they try to integrate in society again. Perhaps I should have put that on the song description, but then again, I love it when everyone makes his own interpretation:-)

Hey Walter, good to see you doing something around these parts, I love the chugging tempo of this song, and as others have said you have lifted your voice up some here. Interesting lyrics I can relate to a lot of what you sing, life sure gets messy for us boys. Moderation is such a bitch, a bit like dry humping, it just inflames.

Enfin toi !

WOW - you are BACK .....
.. I started to type my original comment .. and then noticed that Neil ET AL beat me to it ... I was also gonna say .... this is a different sound for you ... here I was expecting that old MOORLANDT sound ... but I am liking the BRANCH OUT and switch UP here ..... it's FRESH like SPRING ... a new MOORLANDT ..... my comfort level still hears a little of that old EUROPEAN 80's sound there too ! I miss Europe !!!! So glad to see you BACK - looking forward to more more more moorlandt !

Love your sound
I notice a few people welcoming you back and commenting on how this is such a new more upbeat sound for you. As this is the first thing I've heard, I have nothing to compare it to. All I can say is I really like it. I'm looking forward checking out some your older, darker, stuff. I'm thinking I'm going to like it.

What great lyrics
"I’m breathing brown tobacco
But the doctor says I’m fine
Since I gave up eating dogfood
And cut down drastically on wine"

I almost fell out of my chair! That's awesome! This is a really cool song and it's so unique. I like unique and unusual. That's very good stuff Walter.

Good Lord!
Welcome back Walter! Great post with a wonderful sense of musical humor. The song sounds like drinking sparkling water with lemon feels like. Light, refreshing and a perfect combination of flavors. Vocals and song structure sound effortless and balanced. Great post. Oh and let's put down that empty bottle niiiice and slooow...

I love that opening bass...
...at 1:12 the vocal chorus backing up is a nice addition to the simple tune you are playing out, giving the listener a chance to get into something new while staying with the familiar that you've already established. There is a very subtle and subdued feeling to this number. You've resisted over-producing and the results are so satisfying. For my ears, I'd want the vocal just a touch more up front, but it's a small nit when so much about this song works so well.

What a pleasure to welcome you in my music room. Yeah, I agree on the vocal volume, especially when played on the speakers (which I didn't check before posting). Thanks a million for the very valuable feedback.

Free indeed
The simple and clean structure of your beat, guitar and synth bed makes the vocals really come alive. I find this to be easy to get into, like an old favourite sweater. Melodic and lyrical, and a terrific mix rounds out the brilliant production.

Cheers,
Doug

hmmm.....
I remember listening to this song a while back and thought I'd commented on it, but better late than never.
Lyrics are great on this. The presentation is great with your sparse but full arrangement and signature vocals. I like the melancholy irony of this song. Nice!

presented in classy song-writing and awesome production! Great track! "Yesterfriends on facebook", yes, I think we can all relate to that. Love your very clever lyrics, and the sentiment behind this song is right on the money.
